Ranger Poacher Bear

Although Ranger Poacher Bear may seem like a new name on the Boston scene, the band’s roots go back almost five years now. In the fall of 2003, Mike Collins (Vocals, guitar) and Mike Starr (Bass) met each other as they were just starting college. Quickly, a musical bond formed that has consistently grown in leaps and bounds ever since. The two performed together in various incarnations throughout college, playing for anyone who would listen and anywhere people would have them: basements, art shows, fraternity houses, it didn’t matter. What mattered was the unspoken connection and the music that grew from it. It wasn’t until 2007 that the music began to take shape in a new way for the two friends. Songs started to come out that spoke of an identity all its own. Collins’ shift to the acoustic guitar as his main song-writing tool brought out a sound that is both aggressive and purposeful; off kilter and distinct. Drawing from years of jazz and funk studies, Starr came to the table from a different angle and added the foundation and nuance that brought the two’s collaboration to another level. His unusual lines are a breath of fresh air in an independent rock genre that can sometimes have all too many dull moments. After sifting through possible candidates for drumming duties, the pair recruited another unique voice - Charlie Sichterman - to fill out the trio and dubbed themselves Ranger Poacher Bear after a children’s game. Though they’ve only been playing out for a short time, the band is ready to take this show on the road. Their soon-to-be-released EP, Your Me, is a testament to their determination and DIY attitude. Each of the first 100 copies of the EP will be hand-packaged and will feature unique stenciled art and custom stamping. These boys are only starting to make their mark on the independent music scene and they have no intention of letting up.

The band is soon to be a featured artist in Boston’s What’s Up magazine and in their short history of playing shows have played Harper’s Ferry, the Draft and the All Asia Cafe venues in Boston, drawing 60-70 people most recently.
