"Rantz - R&B Playboy"

Rarely does lighting strike the same place twice. But in the case of New Orleans soul crooner Rantz, that's exactly what happened. Lightning struck once in the New Orleans neighborhood of Hollygrove and gave the world Lil Wayne.

Now fifteen years later from that same Hollygrove block, New Orleans has given birth to Rantz aka The Playboy Of R&B. With a smooth, angelic voice, Rantz makes songs for the women.

You're known as a New Orleans soul crooner, as well as The Playboy Of R&B. Did you label yourself these names, or were they given to you?

The title was actually given to me at a young age. In high school I was always known as a popular ladies man and everyone knew that I could sing. So one day while I was hanging in the hallway before class, one of my friends jokingly called me The Playboy Of R&B. From then on, the title just stuck with me and over the years I've begun to embrace. I actually think it's catchy [laughs].

New Orleans is home to many successful artists in the music industry. It has given birth to successors like Britney Spears and Lil Wayne, just to name a few. Now added to the list is, Rantz. How successful will you become in the biz?

I hope to be just as successful as they are or even better. Both of these artists are extremely hard working individuals and have become major icons in their respective genres. I really look up to them being that they come from the same location as I do.

From the same Hollygrove block comes Rantz, just as Lil Wayne. It's stated in your bio that what Lil Wayne is to Hip-Hop, you will be to R&B. Tell us why do you feel in comparison to Lil Weezy, and how proud are you to share the same block with him?

Well first and foremost we are from the same city, neighborhood, and region. Most importantly, Lil Wayne came to hip hop at a time when it was dying and records were not selling. Hip hop was looking for a young superstar artist to revive it, which was him. I feel like I have that same calling with R&B. My goal is to bring real R&B back and make it sell again.

Your voice is smooth and angelic. You make music especially for the ladies. Why just the ladies? Do you not want male fans?

Of course I want male fans but my goal is to capture the hearts of the ladies. I know that wherever the ladies go men will follow. Therefore in the end I will have both female and male fans.

After a relocation due to hurricane Gustav, your visit to Atlanta received an unexpected surprise upon an introduction to CEO of Extreme Entertainment where you later had a live session and got signed as their premier R&B artist. How excited are you to be signed, and do you at times thank Gustav? [Laughs]

Extreme Entertainment is a very successful and hard working company. I'm very excited and grateful that they even considered and let alone signed me. This company is definitely helping to take my career to the next level. I'm firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and at times I do thank Gustav [laughs] for making way for this opportunity.

Let's now talk on your new smash hit single, That Girl Right There. Are you at all surprised that it would be so received?

No not really [laughs]. We worked really hard on the song and once it was completed we knew that it was a hit. It was just one of those songs that I really felt good about leaving out the studio with. I am excited to see that everyone seems to agree.

You have over one-hundred songs recorded. Wow, that's a lot! Are they archived, or have they been released?

Most of them are archived. I love being in the studio so I record as much as possible which is why I have so many songs. I will probably begin to release more of these songs in the future.

What's the benefits(s) of being a signed, solo recording artist, unlike groups?

Being a solo artist is beneficial because I do not have to worry about depending on others and dealing with different personalities. I also have more control of my career and the types of songs I do. I've had many offers over the years to join various groups, but I definitely feel as though I made the best decision to stay a solo act.

You've won countless talent shows in the New Orleans area. Did this help towards you getting noticed, and eventually signed?

Of course. I have performed in some of the most popular talent shows in the city. Therefore over time I have gained a lot of recognition around the city. It also gave me a lot of on stage experience.

It's clever to create a catchy stage name. What inspired the name, Rantz?

[Laughs] Believe it or not Rantz is actually my real name. My mother wanted to give me a name that was spelled in a unique way. So instead of spelling it Rance she decided to spell it Rantz.

Who's your mentor in the music industry? Who's career do you wish to duplicate?

I would have to say R. Kelly. He is the King Of R&B. He dominated R&B for almost 15 years straight, and never sold less than a million records per album.

Aside from R&B, do you rhyme? Like Lil Wayne, would you rap on a track, or two if the opportunity came?

No I do not rhyme or rap. However if the opportunity presented itself, I wouldn't mind giving it a try [laughs]. I think it would be fun.

Your look resembles an actor's profile. Would you also consider pursuing acting?

Yes I definitely would. I believe acting is another way to become a household brand name. If you are successful at it, you can truly be considered a superstar.

Are you currently working on an album? What's next for The R&B Playboy?

Yes I'm working on an album called The Playboys Mansion. The release date has not yet been confirmed but its coming soon. Be on the look out because I definitely have amazing music to share with the world. As for what's next, I have a lot of performances coming up. Hopefully I will be in a city near you soon.

If we could we would ask you to sing a hook for us just so we could hear that smooth angelic voice. Yo! Raps supports. Continued success to you, Rantz!

RANTZ's rise to fame was nothing short of a Cinderella story. After winning countless talent shows for a number of years in and around New Orleans, RANTZ teamed up with DG Entertainment, a local production team with ties to industry heavyweights such as Khao, Diezzel, and DJ Toomp. As fate would have it, another natural disaster shifted those plans and forced RANTZ in another direction. After evacuating to Atlanta, Georgia from New Orleans in anticipation of category 4 Hurricane Gustav in 2008, RANTZ’s career received an unexpected surprise. At a party in Atlanta, RANTZ was introduced to Walter “Bossman” Butler, CEO of Extreme Entertainment. Extreme Entertainment had recently just finished a successful campaign with Baby Boy da Prince, taking his single “The Way I Live” to number 11 on Billboard charts. After one listen to his demo and a live session, RANTZ was signed to Extreme Entertainment as their premier R&B artist. RANTZ reunited with DG Entertainment production team and the rest is history.
With more than 100 songs recorded, RANTZ has just released his third #1 single "Sexy Girl," with much fanfare. DJ’s all over the southern region, including The Go DJ’s and Definition DJ's, have all co-signed "Sexy Girl" as a smash hit! His previous #1 hits include the club and stage phenom "That Girl Right There" and the ladies' favorite, "Hey."
RANTZ DAVIS has performed at world-renowned Tipitina’s, the House of Blues, Republic, Dragon’s Den, and has hosted shows at local venues across the city. He has opened for a variety of performers including platinum-selling artists such as Monica, Trey Songz, Ryan Leslie, Lloyd, Rick Ross, K. Michelle, Young Jeezy, Carl Thomas, Chrisette Michelle as well as headlining shows throughout the entire southern region.
RANTZ's passion doesn't stop with his quest to becoming The New King of R&B. Being a true gentleman and striving to maintain balance between his career and community involvement, RANTZ is extremely active in philanthropic endeavors that promote positive messages and empowerment. A graduate of Dillard University and an alumnus band member of St. Augustine High School's Marching 100, he is especially passionate about perpetuating a high demand and need for arts in education. In addition to peer mentoring at various high schools, he also donates performances to help raise money for the St. Jude Children's Hospital Foundation and the NAACP.
It appears as though Hollygrove has produced another classic artist. RANTZ's success is definitely proof that lightning does strike in the same place twice! Get to know Rantz Davis, the New King of R&B.
