"Rapsure Risin' Rocked the House at VanGala One - Sto:Lo Hip-hop Stars bring hot voices and hope"

Rapsure Risin' : Hip-hop that inspires and uplifts
by Kristin Kozuback, Editor, RedWAY BC News

"Trust yourself and speak your truth", says Theresa Point at the final rehearsal for the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in Vancouver. "We had the support of our community, our family and friends, encouraging us to continue speaking up and presenting a positive voice for Native Youth." Carrielynn Victor (aka Numinous) and Theresa Point (aka T MelaD) are the dynamic Native Youth hip-hop duo aptly named, Rapsure Risin'.

Click here to listen to Down2Ride, one of their new songs they performed that night at the Awards show and later at our fundraiser for the Native Youth Centre in January, called VanGala One. Love the lyrics, "a spirit so strong we gotta stay awake..."

You'll agree, a positive AND loud voice for Native Youth comes from these two rising rap stars. As heard at the Awards and the afterparty fundraiser VanGala One, their message of empowerment, taking ownership for yourself and your choices is inspiring for anyone, of any Nation.

"It's exciting to play here, then go out and play again to support the community at the grass roots level," says Carrielynn. When I ask if they're nervous, they both smile and giggle a bit, then Theresa says, "A bit, you want to do great for your people, but we're ready."

I'm no music expert, but I think their harmony is incredible, their beats are groovin' and catchy, and their lyrics highlight their enthusiasm and spirit. If this is the "new rap", then the boys in the market still singing about beating women and buying bling better get their heads checked, because I will be paying for albums these girls grind out.

In "Flo" you hear "...no room but up for us...it's all about your heart have you followed this far, it's all about your dignity, your strength..."
In "Just Us", their independent side shines through "...think originally...approval-seekers just not me...the choice remains your own, kids."

Carrielynn is from the Cheam First Nation up the Fraser River from Vancouver. I like what she wrote on their new website:, "It is told that Cheam and Mt. Baker are married and all the people who live in their shadows are their children. Cheam is a member of the Sto:lo Tribal Council, which is a group of 11 First Nations along the Fraser River. Sto:lo culture went through many struggles due to colonization, however, the spirit survived and continues to grow today." She's also known as T MelaD in hip-hop circles.

Theresa is from the Sto:lo Nation and also known as Numinous 1. Her calm spirit comes through as a driven, dedicated young woman. "This is about showing what we've got and what we can do. They connected in May 2005 when they realized they like each other's style and sound - and I think you'll agree they create a positive force as proactive Native Youth standing proud and loud.
