"rarescale CDs"

rarescale (and Carla Rees in particular) are to be congratulated for setting out to champion low flutes in this series of recently released CDs...
With regard to rarescale's mission to bring bass and alto flute writing to contemporary audiences this is a qualified success...a CD which is evidence both of the success of Carla Rees's ongoing project... and the emergence of a young composer to watch. - Pan Magazine, June 2009

"Premiere Series 2004"

“The enthusiastic audience was clearly (and rightly!) captivated by the technical and expressive accomplishment of Rees over the course of her demanding but rewarding showcase and she was given unstinting support by Yong – who made the most of his opportunities to shine. On the basis of tonight’s showing, rarescale is a venture with much to offer composers and listeners alike.” - Classical Source

"New York Flute Club"

“The Club is bringing to our shores a new, young, imaginative flutist from England. Carla Rees will be one of the youngest performers we have had in our professional series, perhaps the youngest.” Jayn Rosenfeld, President of NY Flute Club

“It’s truly rewarding to work with someone who has a clear vision and the passion and drive to realize it. Especially so when it’s a vision that takes music to new places.” Robert Dick - NYFC newsletter Jan 2005

"Premiere Series 2005"

“This is music that affects more than just your ears.”

“It is the group’s mastermind…who will always be the star of the show. Carla Rees is a very cool, calm, collected performer, not given to any of the histrionics that can sometimes accompany this kind of music. She clearly has a passion for it, and wants to bring the unique sounds of her alto flute to more people. She has already come a long way, commissioning several successful works and creating these fascinating programmes.”

“If you are thinking of dipping a toe into the sea of contemporary music, this is a great place to start. Look out for more concerts by Carla Rees and rarescale.”
- Pan, Journal of the British Flute Society 2005

Bio

rarescale was formed in July 2003 to promote the alto flute and its repertoire. The group performs regularly in the UK and USA and has international links with several composers. UK performances have included the Premiere Series in London, recitals in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield and appearances at the British Flute Society’s 5th International Convention, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Dartington International Summer School, Edinburgh Festival and at the UK Microfest 1 Festival of Microtonal music. Members of the group have also given workshops and masterclasses for the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain and First National Flute Choir Day, as well as at universities and music colleges in the UK and USA, including the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, University of Southern California, UCLA and the Royal Academy of Music.

In 2007 the group expanded further to incorporate rarescale Flute Academy, a training ensemble for university level flute players to enable them to learn about performance techniques on the alto and bass flute and to gain arts management experience.

rarescale celebrated its 5th Anniversary with a Gala Concert in Shoreditch on 13th September, and members of the group have recently returned from a performance at the Sonic Circuits Festival in Washington DC. Rarescale records for its own label, rarescale records, with its first three discs released in autumn 2008.
