Ray Martin

BandCountrySinger/Songwriter

Ray has been described as one of Manitoba's best kept secrets. He has collaborated with some of the best songwriters in Nashville, and also writes regularly with a group of friends in Winnipeg. Real songs, real stories, real people, real country.

Biography

The day I met Marty Robbins in person back stage at the Grand Ole Opry in 1968, I was converted to country music for life. I wrote my first song when I was 14 for a school assignment. We had to read a book and submit an essay in any format we wanted to. I was the only one in class who showed up with a song. It was the only A+ I ever received in school. Songwriting was an open door into people's emotions. With it I found trouble, love, and everything in between. It's a gift and a passion that I thank God for every day.

The Miracle

Written By: Ray Martin

THE MIRACLE
Rmartin

HE WAS EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD
THE FIRST TIME I MET HIM AT MY DOOR
HE WAS SCARED AND I WAS NERVOUS
CAUSE I’D NEVER SEEN HIS FACE BEFORE

AS I PUT MY ARMS AROUND HIM
A FLOOD OF TEARS POURIN’ DOWN MY FACE
THERE WAS NO DOUBT IN MY HEART AND IN MY MIND
THERE WAS A MIRACLE TAKING PLACE

SO WE SAT DOWN AT THE TABLE
HE SLOWLY TURNED THE PAGES OF HIS YOUTH
I KNEW THAT HE WAS HERE TO CLOSE THE BOOK
AND HE’D FINALLY FOUND THE TRUTH

HE SAID I’M NOT HERE TO JUDGE YOU
FOR SOMETHING YOU WERE MUCH TOO YOUNG TO FACE
I JUST PRAYED SOMEDAY I’D FIND YOU
AND I BELIEVE A MIRACLE’S TAKEN PLACE

THAT NIGHT I GOT DOWN ON MY KNEES
AND THANKED GOD FOR WHAT HE’D DONE
CAUSE HE’S THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD HAVE KNOWN
WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LOSE A SON

I DON’T ASK ANY QUESTIONS
KNOWING I’VE BEEN BLESSED WITH SO MUCH GRACE
I THANK THE GOD LORD FOR MY SON
AND I BELIEVE A MIRACLE’S TAKEN PLACE

DUCT TAPED BIBLE

Written By: GILLES GODARD, RAY MARTIN

I SAT DOWN BESIDE THE OLD MAN
WE WE’RE WAITIN’ FOR THE CHOIR TO BEGIN
THAT’S WHEN HE NOTICED THE BIBLE I WAS HOLING IN MY HAND
THE COVER WAS ALL FADED
THERE WAS DUCK TAPE GOIN’ UP AND DOWN THE SPINE
DATED 1939

THEN THE OLD MAN SOFTLY WHISPERED
COULD YOU TELL ME ABOUT THAT BOOK YOU’RE HOLDING THERE
I TURNED TO HIM AND SAID MISTER
THIS IS FROM A CROSS I HAD TO BEAR
I SAID I NEVER MET MY GRANDPA
BUT HE’S THE REASON THAT I’M HERE TODAY
I WENT ON TO SAY

I TOOK THIS DUCT TAPED BIBLE, TO FIGHT SOMEONE ELSE'S BATTLE
SOMEWHERE IN THE GULF IN 1993
I CAME HOME I WAS A HERO, AND UP UNTIL GROUND ZERO
I THOUGHT SOMEHOW THAT WE COULD ALL BE FREE
THEY DECORATED ME FOR BRAVERY BUT THE ONLY THING THAT SAVE ME
WAS THIS DUCT TAPED BIBLE GRANDPA LEFT BEHIND
OH I WISH HE COULD HAVE BEEN PART OF MY LIFE

WHEN THE SERVICE WAS ALL OVER
WE SAT THERE JUST LIKE TWO OLD FRIENDS MIGHT DO
I LEANED OVER AND I ASKED HIM
I GUESS YOU MUST HAVE SERVED IN WORLD WAR TWO

HE JUST STARED OUT IN THE DISTANCE
THEN HE GENTLY PLACED HIS HAND UPON MY BOOK
AND WITH A TREMBLIN LOOK

HE SAID, I TOOK THIS DUCT TAPED BIBLE,
TO FIGHT SOMEONE ELSE'S BATTLE, ON A FOREIGN SOIL IN 1943
I CAME HOME MY LIFE WAS SHATTERED,
I LOST MY WAY AND ALL THAT MATERED \
SOMEHOW THE WAR JUST GOT THE BEST OF ME
I LOST EVERY OUNCE OF BRAVERY, AND THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED ME
WAS THIS DUCT TAPED BIBLE YOU’VE GOT IN YOUR HAND
SON I THINK YOU KNOW NOW WHO I AM

Set List

I prefer to do all original songs, but in a pinch will pull out a few classics from Johnny Cash and Don Williams. I can play for hours.
