"The Sun is Out"

Sweet new summer jam from Philly's Reading Rainbow (best myspace URL, by the way), taken from the duo's awesome forthcoming full-length, Mystical Participation. Songs about the Sun are super relevant right now, and this makes a solid companion to that Best Coast song we won't shut up about, especially if you like a little unbridled youthful enthusiasm in your noisy lo-fi dream-pop jams: - Gorilla Vs. Bear

"Feral Kids"

I don't think anyone can get past the name without thinking of the great literary TV series of the same name, and I'm pretty sure this duo from Philadelphia aren't trying to convince you otherwise: their MySpace URL is "levarmotherfuckingburton" after all. But that is where the relationship ends, for Reading Rainbow don't follow through with any lessons in spelling. Instead Rob Garcia and Sarah Everton apply their enthusiasm and ability for picking up instruments and just pounding away at them. (I'm sure reading is also part of their skill set.) Influenced by the likes of the Urinals, Velvet Underground, Half Japanese, Sun Ra and the Magic Twig Community, Reading Rainbow formed as a duo when the drummer of another no wave band they were in couldn't play a show, giving Everton the opportunity to pick up the drums. Thank god for the no show, because Reading Rainbow further that lo-fi/girl group inspired garage that has made blogosphere darlings out of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls. But where those two acts keep their emotions in check with monotone harmonies, this duo raise their spirits up to a level that recalls the unbridled emotion of Love Is All, most notably on "Feral Kids."

Bio

Nothing short of beautiful bashing beats, mesmerizing melodies, and an overall crushing display of songwriting simplicity done right, when it seems so easy to do wrong. Just a two-piece boy and girl couple, utilizing a captivating and metronomic drum beat underneath a scaly and spidery, yet irresistible guitar crunch, it was impossible to resist then, and we still haven’t been able to shake off the shivers they induced to this day. One of a handful of new bands with an instantly unique and penetrating sound all their own, Reading Rainbow drive a deep groove down the center of each well-beaten track on the Prism Eyes LP, creating the addicting and awe-inspiring hum of fuzz-laden pop noise that will have your heart palpitating in seconds.

The incredibly bright and sparkling hooks interlaced on each track of Prism Eyes, jaunt ecstatically between erotic and neurotic, with the wall of soaring vocals and stunning guitar/keyboard interplay knocking out hit after glorious hit. Scraping up equal parts scuzz-chug guitar and sugar beats never felt so good as it does here, further locking in Reading Rainbow’s solid reputation as the pop masters that they’ve truly become.
