Read Yellow was formed in 2001 by four University of Massachusetts students who shared a common love for rock n roll and art. Originally known as the Sharks!, Jesse, Evan, Michelle and Paul started playing regularly around Amherst and soon found their way into Boston, where they met and befriended Mark Kates, chief of Fenway Recordings. Shortly thereafter, they changed their name to Read Yellow, were signed to Fenway (who released their self titled EP), and were playing regularly throughout the Northeast and Midwest. From Montreal to New Jersey, from Burlington VT to Chicago, in basements, skateparks, church halls and clubs, the band set forth to convert the masses. Their EP was also received with open arms in the UK, where it's been played on BBC Radio 1 and XFM. The band has made two trips there, one of which featured them doing a coveted Peel Session.
In late 2003, the band entered Excello Studios in Brooklyn NY with producer Paul Kolderie (Pixies, Hole, Radiohead) to begin work on their first full length. In a total of ten days (spread over 3 months), "Radios Burn Faster" took shape and was finished off at Cambridge's Camp Street Studios. The album runs the gamut of sound and emotion, from the loud yet catchy The Art, Model America and Fashion Fatale to the even louder Spark City Sky and Modern Phobias, to the anthemic The Association and the more peaceful coda of A Love Supreme. Read Yellow was Single of the Week in the UK daily The Independent, and both it and The Art were Runner Up Singles of the Week in NME.
Read Yellow have showcased their furious live show with a wide range of acts including Dillinger Escape Plan, Your Enemies Friends, Pretty Girls Make Graves, ...Trail of Dead, Mission of Burma,
Thursday, Funeral For a Friend, The Bronx, Division of Laura Lee, Radio 4, The Distillers and The Rapture. This spirited act creates a frenzied atmosphere that shatters conventional concert standards and has been seen and embraced on both sides of the Atlantic. Read Yellow is here to show that the passion for making and playing music is still very much alive and very real. In a suffocating time of rehashed sounds, Read Yellow serves as a respirator.
