"Embrace Your Last Chance"

Sometimes I sit here and think that everything is pretty much the same in the world of music; that everything coming out today sounds the same and that every band just wants to be like a different band. Well, apparently Pennsylvania quartet Reality Stricken felt exactly the same way. They were pissed and they weren’t going to settle for what the industry was force feeding them. OK, that might be a little extreme, but once you catch a listen to their debut EP Embrace Your Last Chance, you might just be thinking the same way I am about this band.

You can usually tell a lot judging a book by its cover, and the cover in this case is not their artwork or liner notes (or lack thereof), their cover to judge is their lead track of Embrace, The Secret vs. The Moment. This is one of the more refreshing tracks I have heard from a band not currently shackled to a record label recently, and judging by this song alone, this band is excellent. The energy is special, and with the addition of a solid hook and great, original vocals, it sells the album right away. Moving on, Brand New Trick uses some unexpected double bass work to drive its core groove and A Chapter on Desolate Minds houses the best vocal sound on the Embrace. The album is closed with Short and Shallow Breath, which is a smart idea for Reality Stricken because why not end the record with one of your better tracks in order to leave the listener wanting more. This is also their heavier track and this is where that modern rock sound comes into play, and does it ever work. The song builds while it chugs and breaks down, speeds up and progresses with each riff.

You can hear that tasty mix of modern rock, pop punk and even some subtle new wave nuances in Reality Stricken’s music. I wouldn’t go so far as indie because it has a slightly more defined, and refined, sound to be labeled as indie, but Embrace Your Last Chance could be everything else entirely.

"Reality Stricken"

Reality Stricken is a great little find from Pennsylvania. These guys have a unique sound to set them apart from the usual saturation of rock bands across America. With distinguishing vocals and killer beats to fill in the spaces, these guys are a band to be on the lookout for. With catchy lyrics and driving guitars, RS is sure to turn a few heads. Make sure to check out their song 'Cracked Doors'' - CD Review: www.myspace.com/cdreview
