I dialed your number but I can’t get through
Tryin so hard to get in touch with you
You got me on hold at the end of the line
Call me baby I’ve run out of dimes
I just want to tell you how much I care
It’s a long long long long distance love affair

Met you in Tulsa on a midnight train
Woke up in Memphis I had to see you again
Rode a greyhound down to Miami Beach
Operator telling me you can’t be reached
The phone keeps ringin but your not there
It’s a long long long long distance love affair

Been all the way to California
Mississippi, New York, South Dakota
West Virginia, Montana, Tennessee
Chasin a dream that keeps runnin from me

Now I’m losing track of all the places I’ve been
Tired and lonely and my money is all spent
My boots are worn clear down to my soul
Been everywhere and got no where to go
I’m packing it up and getting out of here
Cuase I’m over this long distance love affair

Been all the way to California
Mississippi, New York, South Dakota
West Virginia, Montana, Tennessee
Chasin a dream that keeps runnin from me

Now I’m movin on
Getting on down the line
Hangin up the phone lookin for a good time
Good bye darling, maybe next time
On your dime

Verse One:
We first met in New Orleans
Guitar in my hands and holes in your jeans
You gave me a dollar and I played you a song
Just two dumb kids fallin in love

Chorus:
I remember when
When we were young and we were free
Like we were in New Orleans
Life was a song and we were the music
How did we lose it
How did we lose it

Verse Two:
Now there’s dust on my ol’ guitar
Your torn blue jeans are folded in the drawer
I’m wearing a suit just to make ends meet
And we never talk about New Orleans

Chorus:
I remember when
When we were young and we were free
Like we were in New Orleans
Life was a song we were the music
I don’t want to lose it
I don’t want to lose it

Bridge:
Time for me to see an old friend
Dust off those rusty strings again
If you gotta a dollar, I gotta song
Lets go back to where we belong

Chorus:
Back to New Orleans
When we were young and we were free
The city was singing to you and me
Life is a song and we are the music
Let’s go back to New Orleans
Let’s go back to New Orleans
