"Rebel Creek"

Rebel Creek
Posted on June 15, 2011 by dsmvibe
One of the best parts about DSMVibe is getting to know local musicians that I didn’t know much about before and finding out that they kick ass. Before I met with Rebel Creek I didn’t know much about them. I knew they were a local band and that I liked their sound from what I heard on their website. Now that I have met these guys and listened to more of their music, I am stoked to see them perform. This is definitely a band to watch out for as they have the potential to do great things.

These guys’ youthful and positive attitude was a breath of fresh air. They were full of life and grateful for the ability to play music and have people listen to it. I never thought that I would have such a rad conversation with a group of guys right out of high school.

When and how did Rebel Creek form?

We have all been friends since our sophomore year in high school, and we started playing music together. Then we figured out that we could start playing some shows, so we emailed Vaudeville Mews. The first shows we played were half covers and half our own music. Our originals were really well received so we started pushing out the covers. The first song we wrote was a blues punk song. Then we had a regular blues song that was really simple and a generic blues song that people really liked.

What are some musicians that you cite as influences?

Luke (guitar/vocals): Robert Plant, David Byrne, Freddie Mercury, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Julian Casablancas, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Page

Tyler (bass): John Paul Jones and anyone else that plays a simple bass line like me

Andrew (lead guitar): AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Who, Strokes, Angus Young, Duane Allman, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn

Jed (drummer): John Bonham knows how to groove and make it heavy at the same time, Mitch Mitchell, Chris Adler, Carter Beauford

What are some of your favorite local bands?

Radio Moscow, Funks G, Bright Giant, Modern Day Satire

What has been your favorite venue to play at?

The Gas Lamp. The sound guys were really cool, the vibe was cool. Everyone was piss ass drunk and getting up on their feet and moving. It gives you more energy.

You just released an album in April. Tell me about it.

Most of the album was done in the first three or four months. We had most of our songs done at the beginning of last year. We took our favorite six songs and put them together. Money from the shows was what we used to make the album.

How does the songwriting process work?

Sometimes we try to write our own songs and bring them in. We start playing as a group and figure out what we like. Luke and I (Andrew) would jam and go to each others’ houses and write songs. Or Tyler would bring a song to practice and then we would work together as a band. Most of the time someone comes up with a riff and we just turn it into a song.

What do you have on your iPod that you hope no one finds out about?

Luke: Hall and Oates

Tyler: We are the World

Andrew: Katy Perry

Jed: P!nk

It’s hard to believe that these guys are just finishing high school. Especially with the musicians they were dropping as influences. This is not just another band wannabe from a local high school. I think we will be seeing a lot from this group in the future. Rebel Creek is one of the final bands in the 80/35 play-in that is taking place tomorrow night at People’s at 7pm. Go check them out and vote for them to play at 80/35.

Peace~

Bio

Rebel Creek is a blues and psychedelic infused rock band from Des Moines, Iowa. They have been playing together for three years now, notably having graced the stage at DMMC's Gross Domestic Product, Lovefest in the Midwest, and the Des Moines Art Festival all in the past six months. They have an EP out and plan to continue their music career next year as they attend Iowa State Unviersity. Rebel Creek won a spot in 80/35, beating out sixty other bands and winning a play in to get to the stage. They're known for intricate jams, catchy lyrics, and a throwback sound remniscent of the sixties rock that attracts fans of all ages. Their influences include Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Radio Moscow. Rebel Creek met in high school and formed a band for fun, eventually realizing that their talent could not be wasted as a hobby. They now all attend Iowa State University as they attempt to make music a career, while college is more of a "side project". Rebel Creek is like wine, only bettering with age...
