"Music Must change - Review of 3th album"

When I got the latest RED BARON BAND record, I did not know at all how great it would make me feel soon. I somehow knew that it was a hard rock band, and yes, I was right. It is no secret that I am a big 70s music fan and RED BARON BAND took me back to this great time in a fantastic way.
Do you also think that bands like DEEP PURPLE or URIAH HEEP make records rather for their own pleasure these days? Times of their smashing hits are definitely gone I suppose…But that is why we have the RBB now. A bunch of four guys who are not afraid to get inspired by the good old times of hard rock and make records that sound just like in the old times. Their music is made with such easiness and nobleness, that we can absolutely forget that it is the year 2006. When you are listening to their music, you get at least 30 years back in time.
The first song is a fresh hit „Remedy“which some of you might already know from the TV station Óèko. „Remedy“is a bit different to the rest of the song on the record. It is modern and it sounds just like hits of stoner rock bands. But the following track „Like A Fool” is a different story. It truly is a very intimate song dominated by keyboards and sounds absolutely specific for the particular time. I think the sound of URIAH HEEP can be heard here. The other song „Burning Ray” is a LED ZEPPELIN kind of music, the influence of this band feels pretty strong throughout the record. „Burning Ray” must be a killer song at RBB´s concerts. It should only be considered as an appetizer before the absolute smash hit „Zero For Ever”. A titanic kind of blues, very relaxed and simply beautiful. I love the sound of Hammond organ here and it sounds especially good here. A song of the year. Gentlemen, I am taking my hat off to you. The first song sets a cheerfully swinging beat. A kind of a hard rock march. Also very good. One could say: “I am not dreaming?” RBB keeps serving fantastic songs just like that. We are back with the LED ZEPPELIN in “Pictures From The Highway” and this time with guitar riffs played in Bryan May´s of Queen style (with a strong imagination of course). It is a short track, but it has its role in the whole picture of the record. In the old times there was not a problem to use brass instruments while making a hard rock album. RBB do the same in “I´m Gonna Be Your Star“. Again a slower song on the crossroads of rock and blues. Those brass instruments remind me of my favorite song”Soft Parade” by THE DOORS. „Here Comes The Night“ starts very easy and relaxed but in the middle of the song it turns into instrumental exhibition inferno in the DEEP PURPLE live in concert style. This song is pretty psychedelic. And finally it would not be a true hard rock record without a VERY long song, which is “Brother”. Almost a ten minute song. A dark blues which reminds us of master Iommy of BLACK SABBATH. The song itself is a bit out of the overall mood of the record. A brilliant final song of this brilliant record…
If I should sum it all up, to me the only weak song is the first track :”Remedy”, which simply sounds different to the rest of the songs. There is no band like RBB in our country. Brilliant musicians – relaxed and absolutely accurate drumming (Radek Horník), fantastic bass guitar (Mechy) which I keep missing so much in modern rock groups – keep focused at his playing the bass guitar. FREE fans will surely appreciate… Mirek Jech charismatic lead voice touched by hands of rock Titans and most of all the unchained lead guitar by Paul Kowacs, who is also the author of all the songs. I have forgotten about keyboards, which are as far as I was informed played also by Paul. It is one of the highlights of the record for me. Absolutely delicious…
You may think that this review is rather a rock encyclopedia and it may even discourage you from listening to RBB music, as it is the music is not original at all. But that is not true and let me explain. All the mentioned rock gods were the inspiration to many musicians and of course you can feel it here too. I am not saying that RBB is coming with anything absolutely new, but it has its own style and that is crucial for me. You may even think that you might have heard it before; nevertheless you will recognize RBB among others. “Music Must Change” is definitely my nominee for the record of the year.

Bio

The band may trace it's beginnings to year 1993, when guitar player Paul Kowacz (ex Crosstown Traffic, General Purpose) and percussionist Radek Hornik along with bass and keyboard player formed a group called Burning Ray, playing for the most part their own instrumental music, paying homily to the classics of hard rock genre. Since beginning of 1995 Mechy is taking over the bass guitar duty and the trio makes their first demo under the new name Red Baron. Later that year they've managed to successfully woo away and bring aboard the front man of Freeway Jam and Black Rain, singer Ian Holecek who stays with the band 'til 2003 (1997 sabbatical notwithstanding). During those years the band not only makes two LPs, their "The First Album" is released in the year of 2000 and "In the Light" sees light of a day in 2003 ( both made in Pilsen's Avik studio), but manages to change their name to its present Red Baron Band as well. During the Pilsen's recording sessions they've brought in some legendary musicians such as Emil Viklicky and Zuzana Michnova and also boosted the arrangements by bringing in a small groups of brass and classical violins and cellos. In July 2003 the band has been rocked by unexpected leaving of Ian Holecek to start his solo career. Their last concert takes place at the 10th National Ralley Festival where they are the main feature of Saturday night's concert. Immediately there after the remaining trio has started their search for a new front-man. In November that year they manage to record a single "Music Must Change" that's been pitched to the local radio stations. Early next year (April 9th, 2004) the band starts working with a new singer, guitar and harmonica player Mirek Jech so that he is able to master the band's older production along with the new stuff that's been written since. Since June 2004 RBB is again touring and enjoying increasing popularity among concertgoers. In September that year the band is releasing a reworked maxi-single "Music Must Change." Prague's Radio Beat program called "Beat Hope" picked up a single "Like a Fool" that's playing to an enthusiastic radio listeners who will consequently vote it program's 1 song. (RBB will be making an animated video clip of the song). In December that year band is featured at the sold out Beat Fest at club Roxy where they claim the best band prize. 2005 is spent by touring and perfecting of their third album - the final version of "Music Must Change." Among the various musical collaborators they've introduced vibraphone player Radek Krampl, fiddle player Honza Moc and brass players (Linhart, Dolezal, Kalfus and Jiskra). They are just finishing the CD's cover. In 2006 RBB has made a video clip "Remedy" which is a part of their next CD and that has premiered on TV station "Ocko". Band has seized this opportunity to introduce to their audiences the new member of the group, keyboardist Vilem Mikyska. Later in April, they've released the second single from the coming album "Remedy." site maintained by the band and admin
