"Review of Red Butlers gig at the Latest Blues Festival at the Latest Music Bar, July 1st 2012"

Review of Red Butlers gig at the Latest Blues Festival at the Latest Music Bar, July 1st 2012

With an average age of 19, Red Butler took to the stage to kick off the Latest Blues Festival, at the Latest Music Bar in Brighton. Considering this is a relatively new line up of highly talented musicians comprising Alex Butler on lead guitar, Jane Pierce on vocals, Stephen Everleigh on bass and Charlie Simpson on drums, you could be forgiven for thinking they'd been together for years! They played a 45 minute set of varied blues classics starting with Walking in my Shadow flowing into Feeling Good allowing Jane to enchant the crowd with her vibrant yet soulful voice from the first note. Her confident stage presence and interaction with the audience and the strong backline provided by Stephen and Charlie was also well received by the hand clapping and foot tapping crowd.
Alex played a solo during each number but my favourite was from Crossroads which he played with skill and a firm understanding of blues form and I noticed a marked improvement in his playing since the first time I saw him at an open mic in Worthing last year.
The set also included Heard it Through the Grapevine, I'd Rather Go Blind and Midnight Blues, all performed to the same confident and well rehearsed standard, by these enthusiastic and energetic newcomers who ended their set with a rousing rendition of Smooth that had the audience clapping along to the beat. So in summing up, this young band is well worth a listen and I'd have to warn those bands that have been out on the circuit for a while 'watch your backs guys there's some new kids on the block'

RED BUTLER

With a burning desire to entertain and pursue a serious music career Alex Butler formed his own band, Red Butler, in January 2012. The intention was to bring together talented young musicians in a band dedicated to success covering a range of genres comprising elements of blues, rock, funk and soul. After a series of experiments the current line up emerged in April 2012. Red Butler includes the following musicians who all have extensive experience with a range of bands over the last five years.

Alex Butler Guitar/Vocals
Jane Pearce Vocals
Charlie Simpson Drums
Steve Eveleigh Bass
(For larger venues Will Wensley on Keys)

The band have already been favourably reviewed by Blues Matters Magazine and Alex, following an outing at the Skegness Rock & Blues Festival 2012, has been identified as ‘one to watch’. Alex and Jane will represent the band at this year’s event.
Alex and Steve attended Sussex Downs College at Eastbourne studying modern music. Early in 2012 the college took part in a national music selection, whereby the best musicians were invited to appear on the BT Live Stage at Hyde Park during the Olympics. The band was successful in winning one of the two places and Red Butler went on to perform before several thousand people enjoying all of the fun and festival appeal.
More recently the band has concentrated on writing original material. Influences include; Stevie Ray Vaughan, Etta James, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Free, Derek Trucks, King King and Santana, all of which contributes to Red Butler’s diversity and wide audience appeal.
With a stream of bookings in music venues throughout Sussex and Kent, and in response to high demand arrangements are in hand to produce an album, and as a pre-curser an EP is now available to purchase at gigs.
The talents of this young band demand recognition and they have already shared the stage with; The Ben Poole Band, The Red Dirt Skinners, Loz Netto, Will Wilde, The Will Johns Band, and The Mick Clarke Band. Future bookings include an outing with Jo Harman & Co in April.
With the combination of Alex’s subtlety, flair and passion, Jane’s vibrant power and soulful voice, Steve’s deft, thoughtful bass work, Charlie’s fluid and expressive drumming and Will’s dynamic keyboard playing, Red Butler are going places!
