Redcoat, a college musician, addresses the fears and materialistic lifestyle of rap on his debut CD, "Anti- Establishment."

"Anti-Establishment" is an effort to provoke change by what Redcoat calls "the lost generation."

The 19-track CD tells a story. Redcoat is the narrator. Each track takes the listener through different attitudes and perspectives on life, forming an intimate relationship with the music.

Redcoat -- 24-year-old Jason Newell -- received his stage name during his freshman year at Savannah State University. He's now a senior criminal justice major.

Redcoat describes his music as an art form. His music attempts to focus on problems that the younger generations faces, using hard-edged lyrics on sampled old beats that complement each other.

Redcoat deals with social issues, and explores his love of music in his most popular track, "Sweet Lady."

WHAT: "Anti-Establishment"

WHO: Redcoat

AVAILABLE: Media Play, Sound Shop Records

Raised in Memphis, Tenn., Redcoat frequently visited Beale Street -- the famous blues area where down-home Southern funk filled the air. "Anti-Establishment" takes themes from R&B artists of the 1970s who frequented the area, such as Curtis Mayfield and Willie Hutch.

"Anti-Establishment" is already being sold in Media Play and Sound Shop Records in Savannah Mall. The CD has circulated more than 1,000 copies.

Jason Gragg, manager of Sound Shop Records, said he likes to recommend the CD. "When I offer to let people listen to the CD, I like watching them and they really get into the music," he said. "It's just a matter of getting it out." - Diversions/Web posted Friday, November 29, 2006
