REDEMPTION UNNAMED
SILENT SHADOWS
(Sickotick)
A new shining light in the dreary UK metal sky? 3/5
Deep in the cracks of our metal underground are some talented and staunchly resolute musicians.

Another act to be added to that list are gloomy Plymouth quartet Redemption Unnamed, and if their dark, brooding cocktail of angst-fuelled post-rock, charging prog and classic heavy metal is anything to go by, they should be making a dent in the market given time for future expansion.

In vocalist Danielle Hawkins they have a star in the making – a chameleonic demoness at times – and as a unit the band are more than capable. Despite a production little over demo value, their debut record is a small sign of great things to come. Recommended.

"Rock midgets review"

Arch Enemy have proved quite admirably that a female vocalist can not only front a metal band if she wants, but can out-growl the best of them while she's at it. Alas, as with any band with any kind of individuality, that will lead to watered-down imitators. Luckily, Plymouth's female-fronted Redemption Unnamed have gone for a different route.

Redemption Unnamed have a lot going for them. Their material is along more traditional metal lines, going for a slower, darker sound, than the usual thrash-influenced thang. The production of the album is gritty and monochrome, a daring move which forces the material to stand up on its own, pushing the exceptional bass playing and unique vocals to the fore.

Alas, the whole is far lesser than the sum of the parts. There are moments which shine at various points across the album's overly abundant running time. Downbeat opener 'Orsus' misleads the listener beautifully, all quiet atmospherics; and the mid-song jams, best exemplified by the bluesy central section of 'Melting Idols,' often pull songs back from the brink...

With a couple more albums and some maturation time, Redemption Unnamed might fulfil their potential. But for now, it's worth giving them time to grow."

Bio

Imagine a fusion of leviathan grooves and delicate prog interludes to a fundamentally British HM foundation.
Add to that cocktail a vocal that is equal parts feminine croon and nerve-shredding shriek, and you’re close to defining the eclectic sound of four-piece Redemption Unnamed.
Formed through a shared passion for music and a desire to get British metal back on the map, each members very diverse influence somehow finds a place; inspirations are nailed up for all to see.

Difficult to define, but an impressive mix
