"Blunt Magazine review"

“Ooh, it’s so shiny and colourful. American indie/rock/electro kids Redflecks toured the country from March to April. And their sound reminds me a bit of Canadian dance-punks “You say party! We say die!”. Throw in some Karen O, some Strokes, some Blondie, vocalist Amy’s own sultry flair, some deep bass lines, and a bag full of smarties, and you’ve got an idea. Shiny happy people!”

LIVE GIG REVIEW from NYC 12/06

Redflecks Live at The Annex
Wednesday, 29th November 2006

Watching a band in New York is very touch-and-go. It seems that just about
everyone you meet in this city is an aspiring musician and in a band.
There are so many great venues here, perhaps too many. Perhaps the
overflow of stages available for bands means that the audiences are made
to sift through loads of boring, hum-drum garbage until they find that one
band that is actually worth listening to. Perhaps if there were fewer
venues, managers would be more selective and only the better bands would
get to make their sound public.

After witnessing a throng of sub-par bands, I was more than thrilled to
hear that a young lady I had kept my eye on in Durban, South Africa, was
touring with her new group and that they would be playing at The Annex on
the Lower East Side. I looked them up on Myspace and after validating that
I wouldn't be making an embarrassment of myself, I dragged my 'sound
engineer/hip-hop producing/musical snob' housemates out to support.

We didn't really expect what we saw and heard that night. We were in awe
of everything about this Nashville-based band, but mostly by how much they convinced us. They stood on stage and believed that what they were giving us was worthy. The conversation between us came to a complete halt and it was like that for the rest of the assembled crowd as well – people were actually paying attention to this band.

Amy, frontwoman of Redflecks, is a subtle combination of Tori Amos and
Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She's got the same vocal qualities as
Tori and she moves just as well as Karen. She's the charismatic face of
the band and she uses her well-crafted lyrics as an effective weapon to
get her sometimes politically-driven points across. Amy's powerful yet
sensual voice gives the band an overall likeness to Portishead. Then
again, as one of my housemate's commented, the drum samples Peter was triggering contributed a flavour of the Talking Heads. I don't want to get
carried away comparing Redflecks to other bands but what great peers to be measured up to.

Nicole is the other half of this girl-power duo. She's tiny in frame but
she rocks harder than I've seen most guys on stage. She's only slightly
larger than the instrument she plays but she throws herself around the
stage ripping one infectious bass line after another. It was a proud
moment to see a fellow South African on an American stage. With the lack
of infrastructure and backing in the SA music scene – it's remarkable to
see a strong muso in the overseas spotlight.

Ben and Peter, the thorns amongst our two rocker roses, worked hard not to be outdone by their fairer counterparts. Both first-rate musicians, they kept the set tight and added some masculine rawness to the mix. I also hear from Nicole that they do a fabulous job of chauffeuring the girls safely across the States to various gigs in their sleeper van.

The show-stopper which converted me to a true and dedicated fan was
'Wonder where We Are' - it's a new track which doesn't feature on their
current album. Amy belting out 'wonder where we are, where we are' has gone round my head ever since the gig along with visions of her standing there pointing at her audience questioning society's very existence. She tells me this track is an indication of the band's direction – I'll
certainly be following.

"REDFLECKS album "The Shiny Part" Review 6/29/08"

Sunday, 06/29/08
REDFLECKS, The Shiny Part
(self-released)

It's a pretty safe bet that Nashville post-punk/electro trio Redflecks are the only local indie-rock unit currently plotting a tour of South Africa. Bassist Nicole (the band members go by first names only) called the country home, before meeting former Pennsylvania residents Amy (vocals) and Ben (guitars) at Nashville sushi hang Ru San's.

Little of Nashville has rubbed off on the group, which adopts a familiar, stiff-and-moody new-wave stomp. But that approach appears to inspire them rather than just provide a template.

"Fatal Devotion" sounds like a female-fronted Interpol, but replaces that band's flatlined delivery with Amy's elastic Karen-O vocals and a surprisingly limber arrangement. Electronic elements — robotic handclaps and overdriven drum machines — are kept to a kitsch-less minimum, and the band's slow-burning melodies twist and turn in spooky and strangely catchy ways.
