REDLANDS - The Zanja 8, a jazz ensemble of young Redlands musicians, will perform at the evening gala between resentations of "It's Magic 2008: A Magic Carpet Ride," Saturday, Jan. 12.

The magic show, with performances at 2 and 8 p.m. at Redlands East Valley High School, is a benefit for the Assistance League of Redlands.

"A Magic Carpet Ride" is an all-new comedy magic show featuring Ed Alonzo, "the misfit of magic," returning with a new comedy magic act; Mark and Sheila Cannon, "escape artists extraordinaire," also returning; and new to the Redlands show this year, juggler Bryson Lang.

The jazz combo has performed at many places including Disneyland, Victoria Gardens, Redlands Bowl Children's Workshop, Television and Motion Picture Retirement Home, Kimberly Crest Mansion Mystery Dinner, UCC Jazz Festival, Inland Empire Jazz Festival (1st place winners), Los Angeles Jazz Bakery, Holly Street Bar and Grill, RAXX BBQ, Arrowhead Village Center Stage.

The group's sister band, also directed by Tina Caldwell, is a big band for middle school and high school students called the Redlands Jazz kids. The jazz kids perform at local and community events including the Little Fisherman Restaurant, and Downtown Redlands Market night. The group includes students from Redlands High School, Redlands East Valley High School, Cope Middle School, and Beattie Middle School.

A runoff of the Zanja 8. It will consist of eight high school students. The band will play similar music to what the Zanja 8 plays. The band will perform at community events, and gigs for fun.

All That Jazz

Contrary to reports, the IE’s jazz scene is alive and well

Despite all the headaches, false starts and financial crashes of the past few years, the IE’s jazz scene is actually hotter now than at anytime since the 1970s. This may come as a surprise to a few people, such as those local jazzheads who continue to bitch about KUOR dropping their jazz programming . . . and that’s pretty understandable.Â



After all, besides the loss of jazz radio and the concert series at University of Redlands, some other local favorites and promising newbies have crashed lately as well. Farm Artisan Foods in Redlands dropped jazz after they moved around the corner to E. State Street. Just down the block, the Boiler Room on Fifth is pretty much dominated by DJs these days. Some of Riverside’s jazz joints, like Faces and the Jazz and Art Exchange, have also bitten the proverbial dust. A couple of years ago saxophonist Jim Palmer started the Exchange, an excellent live jazz and education program, in San Bernardino’s Del Rosa area. Earlier this year, the Exchange relocated to Riverside where it lasted only a month before a business dispute drove them out. All of it a pity.



But all that’s history—as the summer months heat up, so will the jazz scene around town. Here’s a look at what’s happening:

Mike and Phyllis Wheeler opened up Backstage about six months ago, not far from the Mission Inn. This beautiful, acoustically sweet restaurant and bar features a wooden dance floor, top-notch in-ceiling sound system, and a killer menu. Weekly shows include a Thursday night jazz jam session and Sunday morning gospel brunch, both of which pack the house. (3597 Main St., Riverside; 951-682-8591; www.backstagerestaurant.com)



Redlands’ Little Fisherman Seafoods doesn’t look like much from the outside (note to proprietors: axe the low-budget sign, dudes). But inside is a comfortable space with good sound and some of the IE’s best seafood. Live jazz every Friday, from 6PM TO 9PM. (1175 W. Stell Coffee and Tea has two locations in Redlands: one on the corner of Barton and Alabama, the other on State Street. Alley Kat Coffee in Rialto is transforming into the Alley Kat Jazz Lounge. The remodel looks to be ultra-cool and in line with owner Jason Davis’ new vision. He says, “We plan to seat fifty or so at a time. There is no dance floor; this will be a true jazz lounge, intimate in the traditional style.” Look out for it, as Davis expects the Alley Kat to reopen again in early July. (134 S. Ontario’s Jazz Café caters to the 35-and-over crowd, and they have a strict dress code to keep things elegant. Their soul food and New Orleans-style menu complements the SoCal jazz artists they book each week. (1133 W 6th Street, Ontario; 909-391-9119; www.thejazzcafe.org)

Back to the Grind is a Riverside landmark, taking up 5,000-square-feet of a century-old building downtown. Besides occasional jazz combos it boasts a wall-length bookshelf, a downstairs art gallery, poetry nights, hardcore LGBT cred and some fine brews. (3575 University Ave., Riverside; 951-784-0800)



On the more upscale end, Ciao Bella in Riverside, with live shows on Thursdays and Saturdays. (1630 Spruce St., Riverside; 951-781-8840; www.ciaobellariverside.com)



Mario’s Place on Mission Inn Avenue offers fancy Northern Italian cuisine and live jazz every Friday and Saturday night. (3646 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside; 951-684-7755; www.mariosplace.com).



Hip Kitty Jazz and Fondue Lounge is located in Claremont’s Packing House, and the name says it all. They book live music every night they’re open, from Tuesdays through Sundays. (502 W. 1st Street, Claremont; 909-447-6700; www.hipkittyjazz.com)



If you’re on the hawk for area talent, and don’t care what venue, there are some burnin’ jazz artists to watch for in the IE. Check out Zanja 8, a jaw-dropping band of high school and college students from Redlands who are gaining international attention for their huge talents, or arranger/pianist Sandy Megas—the guy who wrote the Army’s “Be All That You Can Be” jingle—and his little big band. Others include Hip Pocket, tenormen Loren Weisbrod, Jeff Ellwood, and alto saxophonist Matt Zebley (formerly with the Brian Setzer Orchestra), guitarist and educator Jody Fisher, the Catz in the Hatz, swinging jump blues and hot jazz from Big Bear, Redlands’ own Hobo Jazz (kickin’ it old style with sounds from the 20s and 30s), the ever-popular Jazz Junkies and saxophonist Mark Allen Felton, who just did a record release at Backstage last month.



As for radio, if you don’t have satellite and can’t pick up KKJZ-FM 88.1 in your neck of the woods, tune into KUCR-FM 88.3 on Tuesdays. The college station offers eight hours of jazz programming from 9AM until 5PM, mostly concentrating on the ’20s through the ’60s but with some “now” artists in the mix as well. And of course, there’s always Bop, Drop & Roll on KSPC 88.7, pumping out jazz every Wednesday from 10AM-noon.Â

San Bernardino area gear heads will have another festival to look forward to with the addition of the inaugural Berdoo Bikes and Blues Rendezvous to go along with the established Route 66 Rendezvous.

The San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau has teamed with the San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters - Local 891 for the Bikes and Blues Rendezvous on Friday and Saturday on the downtown streets.

"Our thought is to bring a springtime, early summer event to the city of San Bernardino," said Wayne Austin, president and CEO of the San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau. He said the event is "somewhat fashioned in the same way the (Route 66) Rendezvous is, to have sort of a kick off into summertime."

Part of what sets the event apart from the Route 66 Rendezvous in September is its focus on motorcycles.

"What we're trying to focus on is not the Harley, biker sort of fest, but we're celebrating all motorcycles from all over the world: Triumph, Suzuki, Yamaha, not just Harley Davidson," Austin said.

He said the event's first year will feature "jumps and hill climbs and acrobatics." RAS Racing and Team Peterson NAHA will perform motorcycle stunts.

Inland area musical acts, ranging from established blues group Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers to the Redlands-based Zanja 8 will provide entertainment on two stages.

The San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters union will organize the 66-mile poker run, set to start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Participation costs $5 and includes one poker hand. The ride will wind through San Timoteo Canyon and Live Oak Canyon, with stops at points such as Angels Roadhouse and Chaparral Motorsports where participants can collect a poker chip to be turned in for a poker hand in Meadowbrook Park. Prizes range from $500 to $200.

"It's all about the ride," said Tom Rubio, director of public relations and marketing for San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters. "The guys have laid out. It's a wonderful, beautiful riding course."

The concept for the event, which has been in the works for a couple of years, was developed by the firefighters, according to Karen Blanco, San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau communications director.

"Lots of us go to Laughlin and Hollister and Sturgis," Rubio said, speaking of the established rallies for cyclists. "The idea was to have a good family event much like the car rendezvous but with motorcycles."

In keeping with the theme, organizers booked 2008 "American Idol" finalist Amanda Overmyer, the Harley riding rock 'n' roll nurse, to kick start the event by singing the national anthem at 6 p.m. Friday.

Portions of the event's proceeds will benefit the Edward G. Hirschman Burn Center at Arrowhead Medical Regional Center.

Austin said he expects attendance to reach 15,000, with an estimated 5,000 on Friday and 10,000 on Saturday. He expects 3,000 to 5,000 motorcycles.

"We would eventually like to move into year two or year three with perhaps a major motocross event, maybe at the National Orange Show, dare I say it, maybe even a street event at some point in time like the Long Beach Grand Prix only we'd do it with the motorcycle," he said. - Press Enterprise
