Red Penguin

BandRockAlternative

Smart and catchy, with a big sound - sounds like Rush meets Queens of the Stone Age.

Biography

Red Penguin is new prog, literate indie rock - a bit smarter, a bit more cynical, and a bit catchier than your typical modern rock band. The group centers around the witty lyricism of frontman and keyboardist Levon Bryan backed by the unrelenting, complex guitar playing of Chris McGraw. Together with bassist Jeremy Strunk and drummer Michael Collins, the Alaskan rockers blend elements of Alternative, Indie, and Progressive to formulate a sound in the same vein of bands like Muse and Queens of the Stone Age.

McGraw - who had already established himself as a guitarist with favorable reviews by nationally-syndicated 20th Century Guitar Magazine and local publication AK This Month - initially formed the band as a vehicle to perform his Pink Floyd'ish instrumental compositions and promote his album, "Photon Life." However, the group members quickly started writing new material featuring Bryan and Collins on vocal duties. The band became known locally for its impressive display of musicianship, recieving radio promotion and headlining local shows. Their atypical setlist consisted of a mixing of originals with covers by bands as disparate as Rush to Bloodhound Gang to Franz Ferdinand.

The band released a self-titled EP in September of 2006 featuring 8 tracks recorded and produced by McGraw at his home studio. Upon previewing the EP, local reviewer Josh Fryfogle wrote: "The guys in the band all respect virtuosity in musical skill, and complexity in concept. They don't shy away from taking their music to the next level, not content with playing three-chord, straight-forward rock songs, and it shows in their pending release," (The Frontiersman, 9/1/2006). The short-run EP sold out at shows and online, while the band continued to write and record new material, some of which they would later release as free tracks to their expanding internet audience. The band's most recent demos, "Good Days," "Sheep," and "Pharmaceutical Esteem" showcase the growth of their playing dynamics and more mature songwriting.

Lyrics

Sheep

Written By: Red Penguin

Sheep
Always borrowing your point of view
Sheep
Well you love us 'cause we tell you to
Sheep

Sheep
You're so preoccupied with all your toys
But you're so chicken little paranoid
Its falling down, can't you see its falling down?
Its falling all around you now

Sheep
Try to find your will to live
Sheep
Its such a proper adjective
Sheep

Sheep
Salvation you can pray for
But you get what you pay for
Its falling down, can't you see its falling down?
Falling all around you now

*chorus*
Staring at the go-go dancers in the video
Easy on the eyes now
On the eyes now
You like your melodies extra ordinary
Easy on the mind
Its so easy to be a sheep
***

Sheep
Misunderstanding what I say
Sheep
Doesn't matter anyway
Sheep

Sheep
Follow your fairweather friends
Follow your fairweather trends
Its falling down, can't you see its falling down?
Its falling all around you now

Pharmaceutical Esteem

Written By: Red Penguin

Are you uniquely depressed, just like everybody else?
Come with me

We're selling pharmaceutical esteem

So pure its the miracle cure
For your disease

We're selling pharmaceutical esteem

He likes it
Really really likes it
More than you might realize
She likes it
Really really likes it
You can tell by the glaze in her eyes

Got a self-help book but you don't know how to read?
Come with me

We're selling pharmaceutical esteem

Look around, are you hating what you see?
I agree

We're selling pharamceutical esteem

He likes it
Really really likes it
More than you might realize
She likes it
Really really likes it
You can tell by the glaze in her eyes

*Chrous*
Hearts and minds in perfect harmony
Connect direct to your local pharmacy
For a small fee you can be who we feel you ought to be
Yeah you're alright
***

*Bridge*
You're not undereducated
You're just undermedicated
Help is now available in no time flat

Happiness is spelled P-I-L-L
Are you having second thoughts?
Cause we found a cure for that

Scribble a prescription
Board the sinking ship
We're pretending like we're pirates in our pillbox hats

Complacent little cattle
Chew your cuds and you can paddle out to sea
With me

We're selling pharmaceutical esteem
***

Good Days

Written By: Red Penguin

Light another cigarette
The fire burns your sillhouette to the floor
Cherry burns to your lips
Just like a doomsday meteor

A frog who would be prince
But kisses don't come for free anymore
Take a heart, tear it apart and ask:
"What the hell is this for?"

Tell me what you see through your eyes
Can you read between lines?
Or do you love with a blindfold?

Tell me what you're trying to hide
That leaves you paralyzed
You just do what you're told

*chorus*
And its another sad occasion when you wished you could cry
Traded good days, good nights, good times
For goodbye

Went from eye to eye, to eye for an eye
Traded good days, good nights, good times
For goodbye
***

Drink away another regret
You wonder if you'll ever get your fill
The memory hasn't left you yet
And you wonder if it ever will

A frog who would be prince
Just a charlatan with a claim to a throne
You can wax poetic but its so pathetic
You can feel it in your bones

Tell me what you see through your eyes
Can you read between lines?
Or do you love with a blindfold?

Tell me what you're trying to hide
That leaves you paralyzed
You just do what you're told
