Red Queen Contest

With a sound that lurks somewhere in the realm of alternative rock, Red Queen Contest are a dual fronted four-piece with soaring harmonies, gritty guitars and an almighty rhythm section.

Red Queen Contest came into being during the first hard freeze of 2010. A few gigs in and inspiration bounded from their every pore. So as is the way with plans, they hatched one and set about writing a masterpiece. Yet even the best laid plans can come a cropper. By the time the second hard freeze of 2010 had set in the band were risking limbs, lives and more besides on a perilous path to a remote hillside studio. Character building it certainly was, but when they returned to take stock, they instead took a machete to the master. A lonely song survived the massacre.

And so it began again. This time the ashes were more fertile than ever. Worthy companions were found for that sole survivor. A feeling grew within the camp that something special was afoot. To nail down that feeling they took some gigs, playing at Oxegen, Temple House and Flatlakes festivals as well as supporting Ocean Colour Scene and Whipping Boy along the way. Much to their delight they won the highly regarded Slane Castle Whiskey ‘Live on the Night’ Battle of the Bands in August. A notable gig on the calendar is Hard Working Class Heroes Festival in October.

With songs of life, love, hope and despair, the band plunders reality’s inglorious bounty through driving melodies that at once soothe and stimulate.

In the words of one wisened observer, “they’ve got their shit together and they’re bringin’ it”.
