"redwhite+bluezz: The Experience"

Legendary Saxophonist and renowned Jazz artist Ornette Coleman once said that “ Jazz

is the only music in which the same note can be played night after night but differently

each time” and anyone who has ever had the experience of feeding their soul at

redwhite+bluezz would certainly agree. Having gained acclaim for it’s speak easy style

of nightly performances by some of today’s most renown jazz artists, Pasadena based

redwhite+bluezz has quickly become a local treasure to the areas most discerning diners

and jazz lovers alike. Club owner, André Vener, was inspired to create the Chicago style

venue largely due in part to his passion for food and wine and his desire to introduce the

jazz experience to the city of Pasadena. Being voted LA’s Best Jazz Club and one of the

top 10 jazz clubs in the nation on KJAZZ, the rising popularity of the jazz club and its

artists motivated André, in a joint effort with partners Robert and Denise Zeilstra, to

produce a collaborative jazz cd that could give voice to this true American art form

beyond a local level. Titled “The Experience”, the cd covers all genres of jazz and

features musicians that can be heard nightly in the club at redwhite+bluezz. While Andre

has produced multiple records, this is his first jazz album and the first American album

for Holland born Executive Producers, Robert and Denise. Working with OMI records,

they have produced a musical offering that is designed to appeal to the highest standards

of both jazz artists and afficionado’s, while allowing the first time listener an

opportunity to discover the magic of what has been deemed one of America’s greatest

cultural achievements.

Jazz artists on the album include top LA studio guitarist and composer, Greg Porée

renowned bass player Byron Miller, singer James Tormé, whose father is the legendary

singer, Mel Tormé, and bassist Ryan Cross, whose group Cross Hart Jazz

Experience has performed with singers such as Stevie Wonder, Billy Childs, Bobby

Brown and Wycliffe Gordon.

Porée, who has 2 songs on the album, began playing guitar in the mid 1960’s and has

performed with such acts as Diana Ross, The Supremes, and Thelma Houston. He has

also played on numerous Motown recording sessions for artists like Stevie Wonder,

Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Jackson 5. Miller also has 2 songs on the cd,

and is a self taught bass player who has recorded and toured with Herbie Hancock, Chaka

Khan, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross. They each bring their own

unique style and sound to the album, creating what Miller refers to as an “extraordinary

musical experience.”

Further enhancing the listening experience are selections from saxophonist and Latin

Jazz artist Robert Kyle, Blues Artist, Jacques Lesure, a graduate of the Berklee College

of Music in Boston who wrote a song for the album that pays tribute to the

redwhite+bluezz experience, and pianist Bryan Pezzone, who has toured with the jazz

group Free Flight and has been the principal pianist with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra

since its inception in 1991. Known for his versatility as a performing artist, improviser

and composer, his music has a blend of both jazz and classical styles. Rounding out the

all star line-up for the album is pianist Brandon Coleman, who performs regularly with

James Tormé, and brings his own upbeat, contemporary jazz sound to the CD in a tune

called Don’t Hold It Back.

Nine of the twelve songs that comprise the album are original recordings, written

specifically for “The Experience” and while each artist performs 1 or 2 songs each, many

of the songs are a collaborative effort, creating a musical journey, that in the words of

contributing artist, James Tormé, “ brings all shades and hues of us together for a

marvelous, spontaneous experiment.”

Jazz is the original American art form that affirms the noblest aspirations of our national character, individual discipline, perserverence and innovation. Jazz has become an international language which bridges all races, ages and backgrounds: freedom of being; moments that last forever and yet magnify the present; tradition constantly innovating; expression without borders; communication beyond words; intimacy between artist and listener; spontaneous experience; life stories.

Jazz is improvisation- Jazz is a way of living. Jazz is the playground for the soul. Dig it.
