"Sunday TIMES of London review of RefriedIce Cream's "Witness to the Storm""

Sixty-seven-year-old Denny Brewer and his son Josh form the nucleus of Refried Ice Cream, operating out of a home audio east of El Paso. Their website mixes anti-Establishment paranoia with advice on natural remedies- "Criminals are running our government!";"Use cinnamon to help diabetes!". Their album features sententious gobbets of beatnik wisdom and swathes of heroically distorted blues licks, sprayed over vast, pummeling, free-form backing. Witness to the Storm appears to have been recorded and composed spontaneously in an echoing cave, and doesn't quite sound like anything else. In a world of desperate, fake freaks, Refried Ice Cream are the real deal. SL - SUNDAY TIMES OF LONDON

Bio

Refried Ice Cream's Denny Brewer's voice is imediately recognizable from the opening of Bright Eyes album The People's Key, and he's been called a Desert Shaman in Rolling Stone, and MTV mentioned his spiritual ties to Lady Gaga's Mother Monster video "Born This Way." It's natural their music is going to go places both political and mystic. Denny's led Refried to open shows for good friends The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band, Jim Ward, Sleepercar and Kurt Vile. They've had shows at Stubb's BBQ, Hotel Vegas, Momo's in Austin, and shows in El Paso at TricKy Falls, Black Market, Lipp's Lounge and the El Paso County Colliseum. Started by Denny Brewer in the early 80's with his sons, Refried Ice Cream began playing biker parties in the Deserts of West Texas. Denny had started rockin in the late fifties/early sixties while building hot rods and choppers. El Paso's own Bobby Fuller hung out at his shop back then. Denny went out to California on his bike and became friends with Momma Cass Elliot but split back to play the blues in Texas, jamming with Long John Hunter, Gasher and others. with admiration for Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn, he built up a fantastic collection of vintage guitars and amps to ply his trade. Josh started playing the drums with his old man, and then picked up the electric trumpet, guitar and keys to spice it up. They together put out many cassette albums, passing them out at shows and to fellow musicians like Stevie Ray and Billy Gibbons. Through Stevie they got an invitation to the Memphis Blues Fest. They started their Lion's Den Studio and got an 8 track recorder from Austin's Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas Music, this led to the release of their cds in the 90's. Fat and Free pulled together their mix of heavy marshall and wah explorations with jazz horn and flying saucer madness. Political awareness has always been a part of Refried Ice Cream's message.
