"Best Buzz"

"The best buzz of the new year has to be the Chapel Hill ska band Regatta 69. Get out and see these guys. They'll wear you out."

- The Spectator

"Captured Live"

Lisa Whiteman from The Technician: "Judging from the audience's reaction to Regatta 69s Friday night show at Captured Live in Durham, its recipe is a success. The people formed conga lines, shook the floor, sang the words and enthusiastically yelled their approval at the completion of each song." - The Technician

"SKAttered Smothered Covered"

Regatta 69
SKAttered SMOTHered COVERed
A.P.B. Records
Rating : 8

Ska is one of the few musical forms that is devoted purely to fun. Songs that lack driving beats, happy-go-lucky horn riffs and exciting vocal acrobatics are rarely produced, and the genre as a whole raises the listener’s spirits immediately.
Groups like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish brought this genre to the mainstream a few years back, but, sadly, most of it has gone back underground since then.
Don’t count ska out though; the mix of punk and horn rock is making a comeback, thanks largely in part to the tireless road work of up-and-coming groups from across the nation.
One of the best of this crop is Regatta 69, an established group that constantly reinvents itself to keep its music modern. The success of this North Carolina-based group is obvious, having been featured in live shows with ska giants The Toasters, the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, The Pietasters, the aforementioned Bosstones, Reel Big Fish and many others. The group’s travels have taken them across the US and to several European countries, and even to 123 Pleasant Street here in town.
The group has a strong discography, which is reflected through their always-energetic live tracks and polished studio recordings. The band’s newest release, SKAttered SMOTHered COVERed, is no different. It features a compilation of live and studio originals and cover songs that is the perfect introduction to the band’s eclectic sound. The originals are true to the spirit of ska, bouncy and exciting. The covers are even better, with music from such eclectic artists as Squeeze, Poison, Bob Marley and one song from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The opening song, “Tempted,” originally by Squeeze, is a faster, happier version of the ’80s soft rock hit. The horns add a lot to this version, highlighting the lyrics with pops and short riffs that keep the musical flow smooth and enjoyable.
The cover of Marley’s “One Love” is heavily reggae-drenched, which is especially interesting with the chords that the horns lay as the foundation for the track. Brian Hill’s vocals aren’t as emotionally charged as Marley’s, but they come close, which is a hard feat to accomplish. The result is remarkably true to the original in sound and yet established as an individual work worthy of the listener’s attention. “Dammit Janet” from Rocky Horror and the original “I Wanna Smack You” are other highlights from this hit-packed ska compilation.
The only thing that keeps this disc from receiving a higher rating is a subpar recording job, with some of the tracks sounding distant and poorly mixed. This is no fault of the band, but rather a poor job on the part of the recording engineer.
Nonetheless, this disc proves that Regatta 69 has what it takes to compete in the ska world and in the mainstream one as well. SKAttered SMOTHered COVERed is a wonderful addition for every ska listener’s library as well as a great starting piece for anyone looking to build up this genre in their collection. - Athenaeum

The rowdy REGATTA 69-Ship has set sails to conquer the world THE AIM IS THE WAY! Theres no looking back anymore, its going forward, and nothing can stop them! Captain Brian Hill from North Carolina (USA) has settled an international crew around him (Germany, France, UK, USA) and the smell of the Caribbean, rum and pure adventure is in the air wherever the wind may carry them. On board they hold the most precious treasures a Ska band can own the essences of amazing and original music: a box full of Ska, another one filled with Reggae, a case with Rock and a couple of powder kegs filled with Dub and Worldbeat - always being fired in the right moment. Of course there has to be a Lady on every pirate ship! Motha Nature gives you chills and goose bumps with her Rap-adventures she gets to every core of the cruel reality with her bittersweet voice.

REGATTA 69 has been sailing the seas since the days when Ska was only spread across the Ska-scene-underground. On their minds always the stage! They tour under every condition as long as the audience is dancing! USA, Europe or South Africa every harbor gets occupied, every city taken! REGATTA 69 has played more than 1500 concerts over the last years!
