"Here's a day one band will always remember"

When Paul Imig of Sheboygan got the phone call from 103.7 Kiss FM in Milwaukee on March 16, he was anxious.

"I pretty much realized what was about to happen," Imig, 20, of Sheboygan, said. "I was pretty much pacing, just trying not to think about anything. I don't have much of my fingernails left right now."

For Imig, vocalist for the Sheboygan-based band Remember the Day, the phone call would be a reason to celebrate. The four-member band had won the radio station's Kiss Idol Contest, which pitted hundreds of bands against each other in an "American Idol"-type format over the airwaves.

But the band was too nervous to get together to wait for the phone call.

"None of us really wanted to talk about it," Imig said. "Nobody wanted to get ahead of themselves."

And how do they feel now that they've won?

"When it turned out this way, it was thrilling … just thrilling," Imig said.

Remember the Day has been described as alternative pop-punk music. The group's Web site describes themselves as … "music based on a simple format of catchy hooks, melodic vocals … a sound that can be described as an unbelievably unique, groove-oriented, hardcore sound. Extremely heavy, emotional, aggressive, yet radio friendly."

"Everybody brings something different to the table," said band-member and guitarist Matt Bigelow. "Everybody just comes together."

The band's members include bass player Keith Archiquette, 23, of Green Bay; Bigelow, 25, of Green Bay; and drummer Brett Wiese, 18, a senior at Sheboygan South High School. Imig, who is now in college, is also a graduate of South High School.

When he was in high school, Imig said he never thought he'd get this far with his music while living in Sheboygan.

"When you hear about bands breaking, it's always from California, New York or Chicago — period," he said.

The group submitted their song "Only an Afterthought" to the contest, which they said included more than 600 entries.

In the end, it was their band pitted against a rap artist and an acoustic guitarist. The three groups/performers played live on Fox 6 "WakeUp News." Then, people could vote for their favorite artist.

Now that they've won, the band members will also receive $1,000 toward the recording of their next CD, as well as having their song in regular rotation on Kiss 103.7 FM.

"Anytime you hear yourself on the radio, it's still cool," Bigelow said.

His band-mates agree.

"I'm still like a 6-year-old when I hear it, 'Oh my god, did you hear that?'" Archiquette said laughing. "It's always gonna be cool."

The band said the contest put them one step closer toward realizing their dreams.

"It shows that we can do a lot on our own," Imig said. "It shows that we're not just four guys who sit in their basement writing music. (We) know how to get out there and how to reach the fans.

"You have to make it happen."

"Remember the Day: In the Studio"

Here are some excerpts from the article:

For the better part of 10 minutes, Brett Wiese of Remember the Day methodically strikes his drum kit from a separate room while Simple Studios owner Eric Thielen delivers instruction behind the soundboard.

"Let's go snare." Tap. Tap. Tap.

"Let's hear the kick again." Tap. Tap. Tap.

... ... ... ... ...

"You know, with us, we usually record five at a pop … because it takes a long time to do these things...it takes a long time to track something that's really good. You have to plan on taking a long time, because when you think something sounds good, know that you could do it better and then track it again."

Thinking big

Archiquette has a wider frame of reference seeing as how Remember the Day recorded at Water Music in Hoboken, N.J., last year before choosing Simple for their latest five-song EP, "Going Once, Going Twice..." out April 24. The band used money from a Milwaukee radio contest to make the long van haul so they could record where the big boys play.

Living amongst recording luxury outside New York City, and now coming back to Green Bay, has given Archiquette an eye-opening glimpse at how much hard work is required to make a great sounding record.

"The first time we recorded, we wanted things done quickly. Bang, bang, bang. That, of course, wasn't the case," said Archiquette, of Green Bay, who has a makeshift studio in his basement for pre-production work. "Now, we track things, write material down in my basement first. That way, when we do come in the real studio, when it's for keeps, for money, we absolutely know what we are doing."

Bio

Remember the Day kicked off the year of 2006 by winning a huge radio and television contest in Milwaukee, WI called “KISS IDOL”. By the end of the year, Remember the Day had performed LIVE twice on FOX NEWS, recorded a new CD, and toured across the Midwest and East coast in support of its release, as well as sharing the stage with some of today’s biggest bands, including Gym Class Heroes, Staind, and Hoobastank. The year concluded with Remember the Day being named Wisconsin’s #1 unsigned band of 2006.

In the past few months, Remember the Day has performed alongside several National acts, including:
GYM CLASS HEROES
HOOBASTANK
STAIND
HALIFAX
EIGHTEEN VISIONS
THE JUNIOR VARSITY
AGENT SPARKS
NONPOINT
SWITCHED
ALLELE
ASTERIA

Remember the Day is also in regular rotation in Wisconsin on several radio stations, including:
103.7 KISS FM (Milwaukee)
95.9 KISS FM (Appleton/Green Bay)
RAZOR 94.7 (Appleton/Green Bay)
96.9 THE FOX (Oshkosh/Fox Cities)

Remember the Day has also performed LIVE twice on Milwaukee's FOX 6 NEWS.

In addition to that, we also won a radio/television contest in Wisconsin called the KISS IDOL competition, put on by KISS FM and FOX NEWS.

The contest started out with over 600 entries (ranging from pop to hip-hop to rock) before judges narrowed it down to 30. From that point on, it was up to the fans and listeners to vote and decide who should stay and who would be eliminated. Every night, KISS FM would eliminate the 4 artists with the lowest amount of votes until finally it was down to 3.

To decide a winner, the remaining 3 bands/artists (which we were a part of) performed LIVE on the FOX News. Viewers then had 8 hours to go online and vote for their favorite. Among other prizes for winning, the most significant part of being named the KISS IDOL was that our song, “Only an Afterthought", was entered into regular rotation on Wisconsin’s largest radio station, 103.7 KISS FM, being played every 2-3 hours for the next 6 weeks.

Remember the Day's tour history includes stops in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and New York.
