Bio
Inspired by music with heart and soul, from classic jazz to post-war musical film and through to the singer-songwriters of the 70's, Dutch-born vocal artist and composer, Renate Nguyen's sound, has been compared to that of Duffy, Caro Emerald and Norah Jones.
Writing since the age of ten, her roots in devotional and choral singing, and an ever-present desire to broaden her musical and spiritual horizons, have resulted in a repertoire that unmistakably focuses on a genuine connection with her audience. Her breezy blend of folk, rock and pop, peppered with all the nuance and passion that jazz and gospel bring to the table, lingers long after you listen and resonates with all of of us who love to live and love.
In 2006, Renate was a finalist in the Pop category of the Australian Gospel Music Awards and in 2011 was a finalist in the Popular Contemporary category of the APRA Professional Development Awards.
Now based in Sydney with her husband, actor Tai Nguyen, her current repertoire is the culmination of a journey that has spanned three continents and a myriad of musical influences from Ella Fitzgerald to Elton John. Among her contemporaries, she finds artists such as Kimbra, Sarah Blasko and C. W. Stoneking to be of great inspiration.
Renate is currently writing songs for her upcoming album to be recorded this year and her single So Unusual is available for download on iTunes and the music video can be seen on YouTube.
