""No Babysitter Required""

By Lauren Carter
Monday, July 21, 2008
BOSTON HERALD
We grew up in the same Wilmington neighborhood. I knew her as the bubbly, pint-sized cutie I babysat on weekends. She had strawberry-blonde pigtails, which I braided. I was, of course, her favorite babysitter.

Back then her name was Brittany Marcou. Now, she's a rising star in a world where the Britneys of the game have already made their mark, so sh e goes by her middle name.

Renee Marcou has made appearances on MTV's TRL, in virtually every sports stadium in Massachusetts and on cable news programs. She has a marketing and development deal with Moonlight Entertainment in the works, and a pair of hot singles, "Collide" and "Don't Let Go," on the way to radio.
Who knew she was destined for stardom? I remember her energy and charm, but had no inkling she had dreams of wowing audiences and collaborating with Justin Timberlake.

"I can't even imagine doing anything else," the 20-year-old Marcou said during a sit-down at Surefire Music Group in Lowell, her musical home-away-from-home. "I would never give up my music career. I absolutely live for it."

Turns out her desire to be an entertainer was a well-kept secret from most everyone. Her aunt once caught her singing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush in one hand and a teddy bear in the other, but for the most part, her friends, family and favorite babysitter were in the dark.

That is, until she recorded a cover demo at age 15. Her parents realized that their daughter not only wanted to be a star, but had the talent to actually become one.

With their support, Marcou sent her demo to various production teams, started a Web site, shot a video and kept on recording. She also began a radio tour as a spokeswoman for Baby Safe Haven and is scheduled to appear on "The Tyra Banks Show" this fall as a representative.

Six months ago, Marcou linked up with Surefire Music Group, a music production and recording company that has worked with such artists as Ne-Yo and Makio of "Making the Band 4," and also is producing an upcoming Left Eye (of TLC fame) project.

"When Renee came through, it was like, 'She's got something'," Surefire CEO Jared Hancock said. "It was almost like a blessing."
Now, Marcou has enough songs for an EP, planned for an end-of-summer release. Meanwhile, look out for her explosive r & b pop song, "Don't Let Go," which sounds better than anything on the radio right now - and that's not just her ex- babysitter talking.

Marcou has serious skills as a singer and dancer, but it's even more impressive that she writes all her own music on real-life topics, while avoiding churning out tired tunes about falling in love or kicking it in the club. She actually wants to be a role model.

"I always knew I was going to do something huge in the entertainment business," said Marcou, who certainly doesn't lack self-confidence. "There's nothing else I can see myself doing. This is me. This is who I am."

""Wilmington Teen Collides into Stardom""

Wilmington teen collides into stardom

WILMINGTON -- Like any 19-year-old girl next door, Renee Marcou thinks Justin Timberlake is "amazing." The difference is she could someday share the stage with the reigning prince of pop.
The platinum-blonde Wilmington resident has all the ingredients for stardom -- looks, personality, talent and a pinch of sass. Earlier this month, Marcou released her first single overseas in Japan, South Africa, Germany and Sweden. She teamed up with Jamaican rap artist Shaka Dee on her radio-friendly track, "Collide."
"A lot of entertainment in other countries comes out of America. This is a chance for me to create a buzz before it gets picked up here in the U.S.," Marcou said.
After graduating from Wilmington High School in 2006, she began pursuing her dream of becoming an international pop sensation. She signed on with SureFire Music Group as one of its artists and became a spokesperson for Baby Safe Haven.
"I have the right people behind me. My family has been there since day one supporting me, SureFire has an amazing team of producers and Baby Safe Haven is a great organization. I feel like it gets hard if you make it hard, but I have enjoyed every step," she said.
Marcou's influences are a potpourri of genres. She rattles off names like Etta James, Whitney Houston and Ray Charles. She also finds U2, Lupe Fiasco and The Beatles "very inspirational."
But it's Justin Timberlake that has her heart.
"He is so intelligent in what he does," she gushed. "He plays the piano, guitar ... he is producing, writing for other artists and has this amazing fan base all over the world. He also stands for good things. I can see myself working with him in the future."
