"SPREADING THEIR WORD (GOSPEL RAP GROUP RELAYS MESSAGE THROUGH SONG"

In 2001, Rodney Warren Shurelds knew exactly what he wanted out of life. His future, he thought, rested in Austin, where he planned to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in architecture.
At least that's what he thought.
Call it a twist of fate or divine intervention, but Shurelds found that his true calling in life was spreading the Gospel through rap music. Along with his music partner Earl Ellis Dix Jr.- whose own plans of playing football were sidelined by injury-Shurelds' self described U-turn has led to a far more fulfilling life than he ever expected.
"We had our lives mapped out before we came to the knowledge of Christ and realized what he wanted us to do," Shurelds said. "So we had to turn around and go another route."
Their journey began in 2001 when the duo known as R.E.C., which stands for Revealing, Evangelistic, Concepts- entered a talent contest at their church, New Zion Christian Fellowship in Killeen. it was the first time they had ever rapped, but the two walked away with the top prized of $100.
"We decided to start are own ministry within the rap arena," Shurelds said.
Their careers took off faster than they expected. Dix and Shurelds regularly perform at churches around Killeen and have struck up a relationship with Dallas venues. They now have their own record label, Daily Records, and will release their second CD in July.
While they're exited about the upcoming releases, R.E.C. is even more exited about the chance to promote their albums through concert.
" It helps, because people actually get to see you instead of just hearing you on the CD, " Dix said. " Music can deceive peole because they don't know the person. When you're doing gospel music, the real ministry starts after the song is over. It is as question of how do you draw people to Chirst?
The best part, the duo said, is knowing the experiences they relate through song can often help other peopel.
" Anytime you come off the stage and someone says that it really touched their hearts and opened their eyes, it's a great feeling," Dix said. "They finally see what they've been going through and how they can change."
R.E.C. is always looking for new acts. Those interested in contacting the group should call

Bio

R.E.C.’s Autobiography

In 2002 a gospel rap/P.O.B. ministry which goes by the name of R.E.C
(Revealing, Evangelistic, Concepts) was formed. The group consisted of three members Earl Dix aka T.M.P., Rodney Shurelds (C.H.A.C.E.) and Chris Tucker. Rudy Mcgill would later join as the first solo artist of R.E.C.'s up and coming Label, Daily Records.

R.E.C. was inspired to start their own ministry January of 2002 when they entered a talent show that their church’s youth group put together a*long with a dinner musical. The three originals Rodney, Earl and Chris, which later moved away, decided to do one of Prime ministers songs, sainctified slide and won first place. They did the same song at the dinner musical and also got to hear two other gospel rap groups which encouraged them even the more. It wasnt just them winning first place in the talent show, or hearing the other ministers that cause them to begin their ministry. Rodney and Earl were inspired by the Holy Ghost, who showed them a generation that was being sifted by the devil, through music and t.v.. Though some times they still find it funny they are rapping because neither one of them ever wanted to be rappers, they understand the call on their lives and have accepted what God has called them to do.

R.E.C’s closest friends and family consist of their church family at New Zion Christian fellowship, and them selves because natural family is so far away. Earl moved to Texas in 1994 from Alabama where he was born and Rodney was born in Temple Texas but has family all over the globe. The two of them have been like brothers since they met in 1994 and Rudy fitted right on in. They attended High School in Killeen Texas. Rodney and Earl have already graduated and enrolled at Central Texas College in Killeen Texas and Rudy now attends North Texas University. Earl’s family in Texas consist of his parents Earl Sr & Bonita Dix and his little sister Brittany Dix, Rodney’s family consist of his His mom Qwen Shurelds, His aunt and uncle Will and Dawn Robison and his two cousins Patience and Zakoya Robison. Rudy has his Parents Rufus and Regina McGill and his sisters Pookie and Angela McGill.
Both of the boys have a pretty good musical back ground Earl is a the Drummer at his church and also plays the key board, Rodney doesn’t play an instrument but him and Rudy have been around music since they were little as well as Earl and they have grown to love and appreciate it; and understand the power it has. Some of the rappers they listened to before they came to Christ were Jay z, Lil Wayne, 2-pac, ecc… until introduced to Christian rappers like lil raskul, prime minister, Da Truth, Flame, LeCrae and many more.

It’s a blessing that these boys our in a position to minister now because they might have been raised in the church but the church wasn’t in them. They were in church on Wednesday and Sunday but their off time was devoted to clubs, parties or what ever they thought they could get away with. It took many different situations from getting caught stealing, people getting shot, or even them getting shot at for them to realize that God has purpose on their life and he wouldn’t have spared their lives so many times if he didn’t want to use them as willing vessels. These young men understand that God called them at a young age for a reason, and that’s because they are strong and with his power they can reach this Generation with the Gospel by using Rap as a tool. "Every day is a press". but they were taught by their spiritual guardians Bishop and First Lady Grace very well ,and they taught them “You can’t expect increase without opposition.” “If you want something you never had you have to be willing to do something you never done.” Look “Ever forward and never backwards”. And also told them to be like a RHINO “Remain Holy in Negative Opposition”.
