"Ex-Litany for the Departed bandmates regroup as Residue"

With a quantum dynamics research scientist as the lead singer, it's little wonder that the rock group Residue marches to the beat of a different drummer. Although the Austin-based quintet sounds a lot like a good old-fashioned guitar rock band, Residue's lineup is chock full of music geeks who like nothing better than discussing experimental time signatures and offbeat songwriters.

So don't be surprised if you hear a compelling complexity creep into a chorus. And don't be surprised if they sound a little familiar, either.

Four of the five members of Residue have toured for that last couple years under the name Litany for the Departed with female vocalist Amanda Lombard. The group has since parted ways with Lombard, but with the addition of Dave Shoo on guitar and Cory Trahan's move to lead vocals, Residue has retooled and rebuilt on a solid, hard rock foundation. GO! recently talked with Trahan about his band's new direction:

How did the old band, Litany for the Departed, become Residue?

Trahan: I've been a musician all my life. I moved to Austin many years ago and called several of my musician friends and we got together and formed Litany. We decided we wanted a female front person.

We played with Litany for two and a half years, and two years ago we were asked to go on tour with a national band called Hurt out of California.

On the road some relationships in the band were tested and we realized this combination would not work - the relationships have to be strong. We decided to reform with me on vocals instead of guitar.

Who writes your music?

Mike (Carpenter) the guitar player and I are the songwriters in the band. We started this project with me being the singer. I did play guitar, but now I'm on lead vocals. We're in the process of auditioning a new second guitar player so I can focus more on singing.

What are your musical influences?

Mike and I share the same influences, classic metal stuff like Metallica and Megadeth. We don't play metal, but we listen to it....

Ryan listens to Red Hot Chili Peppers and anything with heavy bass influence. Brent likes experimental rock, Rush and Tool. He's a big timing guy, impressed with odd time signatures. We all listen to the radio.

We've had to leave Austin to play our music. Our music is hard rock and Austin is into indie rock.

What singers influence you?

James Taylor, Roger Waters, Adam Gontier from 3 Days Grace, and Benjamin Burnley from Breaking Benjamin are all singers I like. I like the presence, style and gritty tones of Benjamin Burnley and his songwriting and melodic hooks. I like creating hooks.

Is there something particular you are trying to accomplish with your music?

Music to me is a release, a way to get out and get away from what is bugging me. Music is another level, and when I perform all is forgotten for two hours. I'm a workaholic by nature, and music is a way of getting me away from that for a while. I hope other people can identify with my lyrics and the observations I make of the world around me.

In your song "Motivational Speaker," you sing, "No one's time is long-reach awakening, every day you sleep, half your life goes. It takes strength to bring a change you see." What or who are you talking about here?

I just see many people around me that say they want something, but they aren't willing to put forth the work or effort to accomplish it. Especially my musician and artist friends and acquaintances that say they want to be professional musicians and artists, but are not willing to put in the time and practice.

Many people expect good things to happen to them without working hard for it, and it just doesn't work that way.

Bio

Residue: The remainder of something after removal of parts or a part.

Residue is a modern, hard-rock band from Austin, TX and is comprised of Brent Barnett (drums), Mike Carpenter (guitar), Ryan Landry (bass), Dave Schoo (guitar), and Corey Trahan (vocals). Although the band was only formed in March 2009, it is comprised of veteran musicians who have been a part of the Texas music scene for many years. Residue can be considered a career continuation of the past project "Litany for the Departed", since four of the five members previously played in Litany. Although short-lived, Litany became a successful regional act rather quickly, opening for numerous national acts such as Powerman 5000, Adema, Hurt, etc. One stark difference between the two bands is the transition from female vocalist, Amanda Lombard, to male vocalist, Corey Trahan. Previous members of Litany believe that this transition will be much easier for hard rock listeners to swallow, yielding a more marketable sound - one without consistent comparisons to the few female-fronted, hard rock National acts.

Since Litany's departure in December 2008, Residue's members have dedicated themselves to creating music with a re-newed sense of energy and passion. One primary focus this time around, however, is friendship and longevity. With this in mind, Residue recently acquired new guitarist, Dave Schoo - formerly of the band "Caged."

It is likely that Residue will pick up momentum very quickly mid-Summer and continue to play regularly throughout Texas. Currently, the band is refining their live set and recording a first EP - which will likely be released this Summer. A rough version of one song from this EP, "Motivational Speaker", can be heard on the band's myspace - myspace.com/residueaustin.
