"good bands making good music"

"The music world is chock full o' bands who "defy classification," "span genres;" there are even those who "push recognized boundaries," and, God help us, "serve up a musical gumbo."...The point is, for every band that dares to choose the road less traveled, there's a pack of music critics following close behind, each trying to outdo the other with breathless hyperbole. The problem is that, more often than not, a band is just a band.
Then there's Resin, a group for whom the praise might actually be deserved. ...Imagine Grace Slick at her psychedelic peak, fronting Sly and the Family Stone, only everbody in the band is wearing Birkenstocks and you're on 'ludes. That's Resin...Resin is good, and refreshingly so - in the sense that good musicians sometimes do end up in good bands making good music, despite trends to the contrary. That - not veiled allusions to evolving musical styles - makes them worth seeing." Aaron Bragg The Local Planet Weekly, Spokane, WA April/02

"pleasant surprise"

"The pleasant surprise of the week is happening this weekend at the Corktown as Resin returns to town to play their very original brand of trip folk...led by Julie Vik...complete with full-throated delivery and lyrics that float in between direct and esoteric...Recently a board mix of a Resin show made it into [my stack] and suddenly the special dynamics of the group leapt out of the speakers and grabbed me by the ears." Alex Erasmi, View 2000 (Hamilton, Ont.)

"not normal"

"...an epic set. The band actually sounded better live than it did on the album...In a music scene topped with sound-alike rock acts and shallow lyricists, Resin's dark, contemplative music and Vik's twisted diction is a challenge indeed...it's not normal. Nothing about Resin is normal." Stephan Dubowski, The Courier (Toronto)- Dec.'99
- The Courier, Toronto

"CD review"

"Resin also features some of the best performances by local musicians likely to be committed to disc this year." John Lucas, The Georgia Straight Aug.'99 - Georgia Straight

"2nd CD review - berlin"

They call their style Psychedelic Art Rock and that's a very close description. A strong link to the english 60s Art-Rock scene with bands like Caravan or Van Der Graaf Generator and their jazzy excursions gives half the picture. On the other side a bit of Patti Smith songwriter poetry (sometimes even the voice reminds me) and a deep rockin sensibility gives the overall direction to a warm and moody experience. Recommended. - psychedelic-music.net

Bio

songwriter Vik's influences range from early ECM recordings through punk (pere ubu, au pairs) via a classical training in the choral and orchestral tradition. The musicians she has chosen to work with are primarily improvisors and each are encouraged to bring their own personality to the songs, while Graham on drums provides a solid heavy groove.
