"Ithaca-based jam band endures Dumpster-diving indignities to keep its environmentally friendly tour van going"

Fans of progressive/jam band Revision can catch the trio at its various gigs. Or they can catch the group Dumpster-diving for cooking oil behind a local restaurant.

The Ithaca-based band — which has toured with Derek Trucks, Soulive, and Michael Franti and Spearhead — averages 100 shows a year, and it gets to those performances on a van fueled by vegetable oil.

Singer/guitarist Nick Bullock says that although the van is economical and environmentally friendly, collecting the oil is a less-than-glamorous task.

"It's not a pretty job; it's not fun going through these Dumpsters," he explains. "You open it up, and you're like, 'Wow, that smells atrocious.' "

But the band members accept the foul odors because of their desire to reduce fossil fuel emissions and produce as little waste as possible. In keeping with that theme, Revision, which plays Lovin' Cup on Friday, Sept. 18, also has released its albums on reusable USB drives as well as CDs. The drives include all album artwork and lyrics in PDF format, bonus video footage and high-quality AIF audio files.

"I know when I have a CD, I'll throw it in my iTunes, it goes on my iPod and then I have this piece of plastic that's going to go and sit in a landfill for the next 3,000 years or whatever it's going to do," Bullock says. "Plus, it seems like (for) the youngest generation of music listeners right now, it's really more of a digital thing for them."

Revision's double-disc sophomore effort, Jekyll and Hyde, released in June, showcases two sides to the band; the first disc is purely instrumental and features funk and jazz sounds, while the second is influenced more by '60s psychedelic pop.

The instrumental disc was tracked at a friend's cabin in Maine and produced by Soulive drummer Alan Evans, while the second disc was recorded in Bullock's living room and produced by Matthew Ellard in Boston, who has worked with Weezer, Wilco and Radiohead. "(Ellard) has worked with a lot of our heroes ... I sent him a MySpace message about two years ago ... I thought I'd give it a try — couldn't hurt to ask," Bullock says. "And sure enough, he was available at the time and listened to the demos we had and really liked it and said, 'Yeah, let's make a record together.'"

Now the band is looking forward to its next challenge. "We're writing for the next record," Bullock says. "We've got 25 songs on the chopping block, and we're going to whittle them down to 10 or so and then start recording. That'll happen some time in the next three months or so." - Rochester MetroMix

Bio

Formed in the reputable music town of Ithaca NY, Revision is a funk/rock band made up of three Ithaca College music grads. Having the instrumentation of Soulive coupled with the songwriting savvy of Wilco, their music grooves, rocks, and has a sincere live energy.

Fueled by their Vegetable Oil van, Revision has averaged over 100 shows a year touring with acts such as Derek Trucks, Soulive, Charlie Hunter, Michael Franti and Spearhead, and The Cat Empire.

Their most recent release "Jeckyll and Hyde" is a two faced masterpiece. The first half is dirty instrumental funk...the perfect party soundtrack. The second half is vocal heavy and stripped down, Elliot Smith meets The Beatles.

The album was mixed by Alan Evans (Soulive) and Matthew Ellard (Elliot Smith, The Slip, Billy Bragg and Wilco).

All their records were released on 1 gig USB drives which include video downloads, artwork and high quality audio.

This band is relentless in the studio, putting out two full length albums and a live DVD in under two years. This has gotten them placements on shows such as ESPN Baseball Tonight, TNT's "Dark Blue", and several independent films.
