"Miami Sun Post show review"

BY CELESTE FRASER DELGADO
While the organic vibes flowed in the Design District, another name-changing local stalwart celebrated its first Spanish-language release on Latin super indie J&N Records. Hoping to get found in translation as “Rhett y Los Borrachos Empeñados,” Rhett and his one-time Pawnshop Drunks performed well-crafted rock from Entre Dios y el Diablo at Esencia - Miami Sun Post

"Yahoo! Musica Review"

Rhett y Los Borrachos Empeñados, is a band that's been categorized in the underground music scene in Miami as the innovators of the new sound "Retro-Latin". (Translated from Spanish to English.) - Yahoo! Musica

"Ugly Beautiful - Miami New Times"

Everything changed when Kike Posada invited Rhett & the Pawn Shop Drunks to appear on his radio show, Fuego Rock, on Salsa 98 (WRTO-FM 98.3). "He told us we could come on," Rhett says, "but that we had to play at least one song in Spanish. I had never performed in Spanish in my life."

Rhett has received accolades throughout his career, but these days he's excited about the reaction to his español endeavor. El Nuevo Herald entertainment writer Erwin Perez hosted Rhett & the Pawn Shop Drunks during his popular Esencia showcase at Hoy Como Ayer last October. Before the showcase, Rhett managed to pen about a half-dozen originals and record them at the Shack, a Hialeah studio run by local rockers Humbert. "I was so impressed by their musical delivery," says Perez. "It's intimidating to get up in front of a seasoned Spanish music audience when you've never written lyrics or performed in Spanish before."

Enhanced with a political conscience and sound bites from DJ Le Spam, the songs "El Negro y la Balsa" ("The Black Guy and the Raft") and "La Virtud de Bicicletas" ("The Virtue of Bicycles") offer a decent sampling of Latin funk/fusion, while tracks like "No Presto Lo Mio" ("I Don't Lend Mine") and "Perdóname" ("Forgive Me") are nicely reminiscent of early Nineties altrock.

Bio

Rhett y Los Borrachos Empeñados, a group of young, affable, like-minded Cuban-American rock musicians from Miami, are quickly making a name for themselves, breaking through the mold of what Miami rock bands are typically perceived to be. The band, which has been writing, recording and performing collectively for about 6 years, is also known as Rhett and the Pawn Shop Drunks.

Building on the momentum achieved with countless local live shows, including their monthly American Spic Fest at Tobacco Road, a residency at Hoy Como Ayer and several out of town showcases (New York's, Acme Underground and Arlene's Grocery and Boston's Harper's Ferry), the band has now come into its own - in two languages.

Afforded the chance to appear on 98.3 FM's “Fuego Rock” radio program and showcase before a packed house of music industry insiders @ Hoy Como Ayer in late summer 2004, the band decided to pen some tunes in the language native to their parents: Spanish.

Recorded, mixed and mastered between October of 2004 and March 2005, the band's debut bowed June 28th, 2005 on Catalina Records, J&N Records and Sony International. "Entre Dios y el Diablo" features the first single and video "El Negro y las Balsa (si nos coje Fidel)". This lively and unconventional tune sounds tropical and playfully entones the struggles of yesterday and today's Cuban national.

Standouts from the release also include the Latin funk of "Ay, No Me Digas", the rollicking "Hasta Ese Entonce", the tender "Angeles Perdidos", the quirky "No Presto Lo Mio" and a moody, passionate reinterpretation of the Roberto Carlos classic "Amigo". DJ Le Spam lent his inimitable, hot hand with a remix of "El Negro y La Balsa".

The video for "El Negro y La Balsa (si nos coje Fidel)" enjoyed heavy rotation on MTV Español during the summer and fall of 2005. Visually, its a visitation to a late 1950's street party where the band is playing to an audience of dancers. The boys are also depicted in fleeing Cuba via inner tube and guest-stars Cuban comedian and television personality Orlando Casin training for a similar water-borne escape.

The second promo clip "Quizas" tells the time-honored tale of a love gone wrong in lovely sepias and pastels. This video was served to multiple video outlets across the States, Latin America and Spain as well as numerous online sites (MySpace.com, YouTube, Google Video and more).

Rhett y los Borrachos Empeñados are currently embarked on promotional tour that will take them coast to coast through 2007 in support of the debut album “Entre Dios y El Diablo”.
