Rich Agata is a gifted and passionate songwriter with a propensity for writing and performing songs of unchained passion. His debut cd: "let's call it hope" is a timeless mix of musical styles highlighted by powerful songs. It has a clean, sunny California sound focused by Agata’s fluid vocals.

Biography

Rich Agata has been gently knocking on the Music Industry's door for the past 25 years. Following inspired recording sessions at the legendary Skyline Studios in Topanga Canyon, California, the singer/songwriter and his formidable band, are knocking a lot louder. Agata's 10-song CD entitled: "let's call it hope" has just been released on indie label R-Turn Records and features the immense talents of Peter Case and Greg Leisz. The CD has become a favorite on GarageBand.com, where the Beatle’s producer George Martin serves on the advisory board.

Agata was born in Hollywood, CA and grew up in the San Fernando Valley, dude. He played in the usual high school rock bands, with one notable exception. His bass player back then was Taras Prodaniuk, who toured and recorded with Dwight Yoakam for 14 years and for the past few years has been performing and recording with Lucinda Williams.

Rich began his solo career in 1980, after graduating with a degree in Journalism from the University of Southern California. He has opened for Matthew Moore, who penned the song Space Captain which Joe Cocker sang in the film and album "Mad Dogs & Englishmen." He even opened for the legendary Etta James. Both shows were at the now defunct Blue Lagoon Saloon in Marina del Rey. A friend introduced him to A&M recording artist George Johnson of the Brothers Johnson, which led to numerous recording sessions, a sit-down meeting with then Asylum Records exec Dave Urso and industry heavyweight George Tobin selecting the tape at a pitch-a-thon.

Determined to be heard, Agata released his first single, "100 to 1" b/w "I Guess That's Happened To You" on the fabled Plug n Socket label, home of the punkadelic cult heroes the Droogs. College radio played it and the folk magazines praised it.

Rich released his second single, "Crazy Idea" b/w "I'm Not Ashamed" on his own label, R-Turn Records. Brad Bradberry, reviewing the single in The Bob wrote: "On his second single, Agata shows himself to be a classy folk-rocker and at this point I'm a bit surprised as to why he doesn't have an album or at least an indie contract. The A-side displays 12 string, keyboards and a bouncy, light beat to get across his mid-tempo rocker. "The B-side is the real gem here, however. If you like cool, under the surface tension in your folk-pop, in a stripped down, urgent manner a la Chris Isaak, this one could wear our your needle." Based on reviews like this and dozens of college radio stations adding and praising the single, Independent German label Still Sane Records inked Agata to a one album deal.

Case, is the founder of the legendary-band The Plimsouls, who in 1980 had the hit "A Million Miles Away." He ventured out on his own with a self-titled album released in 1986 on Geffen Records and produced by T-Bone Burnett. In 1989, Case released a second solo disc, "The Man With the Blue Post-Modern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar," this time with the help of artists like David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Ry Cooder, and Benmont Tench. The album was a favorite of critics and other musicians: Bruce Springsteen told Rolling Stone that he was listening to Peter Case more than anyone else that year. This past February, Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, released a three-disc tribute to Case, entitled "A Case for Case;" the set featured cover versions of Case's songs performed by various artists, including John Prine, Susan Cowsill, and others.

Leisz is considered by most to be one of the best session players on the planet. The man's resumé is daunting, boasting spots with Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Peter Case, Paul Westerberg, Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Victoria Williams, Joe Cocker, Dave Alvin, k.d. lang, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Cockburn, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, and the Ventures...to name a few. Not to be pigeonholed in just roots music, Leisz has also played with the likes of Beck, Matthew Sweet, Bad Religion, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Brian Wilson.

Bob Saldana, Agata's long-time producer, is a fixture in the Los Angeles, Austin and Nashville music scenes. He has worked with Carla Olsen and the Textones, Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour, to name a but a few. His long-running cable television show, L.A. To Nashville has featured a parade of whos-who in the music biz.

Drummer George Dum has recorded, mixed, mastered and co-produced Agata's debut cd: "let's call it hope." George was born in Austria, graduated with honors from the Vienna Jazz Conservatory and has played drums on over 300 recording sessions. He has done session work for Killer Tracks (BMG) and various artists. He currently records, mixes, masters and produces a myriad of talents from his "Liquid Fish" studio in North Hollywood.

Lyrics

I'm Not Ashamed

Written By: Rich Agata

I’m not ashamed
To say I want you back right now
To scream it right out loud
In the middle of a crowd
But I can’t remember how

I’m not ashamed
To want to be with you today
And to wish you’ll always stay
And to love you if I may
But I haven’t found a way

Late at night, I can hear that lonesome railroad
Late at night, I can smell your skin on my pillow
Late at night, I can hear you whisper “go slow
Late at night, I can feel my soul sail home

So I visit you each night, in a dreamy neon light
So blurry yet so bright, like a phoenix’ last flight

I’m not ashamed
To say my love for you still burns
And in my heart some place it yearns
And I pray some day I’ll learn
That you never will return

Me & You

Written By: Rich Agata

Bonnie had Clyde, Jekyll had Hyde
So, is it any wonder why I want you by my side

Oedipus had his mother, Groucho had his brothers
So, is it any wonder why I love you like no other

There’s a lot of magic we could do
If we just stick together two by two
Me & you

Cleopatra had the Nile, Mona Lisa had her smile
So, is it any wonder why I’m smitten by your style

’Cause Liz she once had Dick, Bianca once had Mick
I had you and you had me but it ended far too quick

There’s a lot of magic we could do
If we just stick together two by two
Me & you

Noah built the ark when he was warned
of nasty weather
So, before it starts to rain why don’t we get together
If we would dare to care and share this
world would be much better
But while we wait the sky she cries and
we’re all getting wetter
Me & you, two by two

Dimaggio had Monroe, Beckett had Godot
But if you’re waiting for an answer you had better go

’Cause Cyrano had his nose, John Keats had his prose
Truth is beauty, beauty’s truth
and that’s all you need to know...except:

There’s a lot of magic we could do
If we just stick together two by two
Me & you

The Right Kind Of Love

Written By: Rich Agata

After all I’ve been feeling
It’s gonna to take a whole lot of healing
Not counting all the time you’re stealing

And it won’t be too soon
Once in a very blue moon
You’ll float on by like a red balloon

Sometimes I find myself just wishing and
praying for the light above
To shine on me and bless me with the right kind of love

We met under circumstances
Perfect for our verbal dances
Left wondering just what my chance is

And if I should strike a chord
It’s sure to be ignored
The cost to trust you can’t afford

Sometimes I find myself just wishing and
praying for the light above
To shine on you and bless you with the right kind of love

It’s not a prize, so you can’t win it
It can’t be realized, until you’re in it
So dry your eyes and let’s begin it

I can’t believe how long
I’ve held on to this dream
Longer than I care to reveal

And if you’d make it true
And said you loved me too
I’m still not sure what I would do

Sometimes I find myself just wishing and
praying for the light above
To shine on us and bless us with the right kind of love

Do You Ever Think Of Me?

Written By: Rich Agata

You’ve been stallin’
Ain’t been callin’
’Cause you’re not sure if you’re fallin’ in love with me

You’ve been layin’ low
Ain’t been sayin’ so
All alone, I’ve been prayin’ for you to come home to me

I just don’t know what I can do (haven’t a clue)
What on earth can the answer be? (it mystifies me)
All I do is think of you, do you ever think of me?

If you do I’m much obliged
And when you call, I’ll act surprised
I’ve seen the truth and I’ve heard your lies
So put to rest your alibis

I’ve been writing you
Ain’t been fighting you
Does it frighten you because
you just can’t make up your mind?

I’ve been waiting here
Ain’t I made it clear?
A parade of tears has just marched all over my heart

I just don’t know what I can do (haven’t a clue)
What on earth can the answer be? (it mystifies me)
All I do is think of you, do you ever think of me?

Two Notes

Written By: Rich Agata

I can’t explain exactly how I’m feeling
All I know is that my mind is reeling
And I know that all my hurts are healing
All my hurts are healing now

We’re like two notes, so high yet so in tune
Hot as the sun and full, full as the moon
And I know that we will both be singing soon
We will both be singing soon

Fa-la-la — Hey, I’m falling
(Hey, I’m falling, too)
Fa-la-la — Hey, I’m calling
(Hey, I’m calling you)

It’s magic, ain’t gonna fight it
This love, no need to hide it
No need to hide our love
No need to hide it

I’m in love and she’s in love with me
I never thought I could be so happy
Open your hearts, c’mon everybody sing

Fa-la-la — Hey, I’m falling
(Hey, I’m falling, too)
Fa-la-la — Hey, I’m calling
(Hey, I’m calling you)

Waiting For Love

Written By: Rich Agata

I know you’ve heard this song before
About a man left on the floor
Waiting for love to find his door
Waiting for love...he was waiting for love

There’s a lot of girls I’ve sang the blues to
And a lot of girls I’ve sang I love you to
And there’s one thing I’m getting used to
And that’s waiting for love...waiting for love

It aint religion and it aint dope
Oh, people will you listen?
Let’s call it hope

Then one day quite unexpected
I met a girl her heart protected
Never again to be rejected
Waiting for love...she was waiting for love

We climbed a hill and saw the stars
And wondered if we’d have to travel that far
To find a love, I touched her heart
We found love, we found love

It aint religion and it aint dope
Oh, people will you listen?
Let’s call it hope

To Live In Heaven

Written By: Rich Agata

There’s a lot of hunger goin’ ’round
And a lot of lost loves to be found
There’s a lot of shattered dreams in this town
And a lot of broken promises on the ground

Everybody wants to live in heaven
(We’re all angels without wings)
Everybody wants to live in heaven
(We’re all angels without wings)
Everybody wants to live in heaven...without dyin’

There’s a lot of people to be fed
And a lot of leaders to be led
There’s a lot of pretty dreams in my head
But it seems we cling to nightmares instead

Everybody wants to live in heaven
(We’re all angels without wings)
Everybody wants to live in heaven
(We’re all angels without wings)
Everybody wants to live in heaven...without dyin’

Everybody wants to live in heaven
(Or am I the only one?)

You'll Never Know

Written By: Rich Agata

When you’ve discovered why the sky is blue
And when you’ve finally figured out what to do
And when you’ve walked a mile in my shoes
Then you’ll know how much I love you

When you’ve learned why the sun is in the sky
And when you can look at me, right in my eyes
And when you get some how’s for all my why’s
Then you’ll know how much I cried

Nobody loves you like I do
Nobody’s heart could be this true

So, when you’ve discovered why the sky is blue
Then you’ll know how much I love you
Then you’ll know how much I love you
You’ll never know how much I love you

Don't Turn Your Back

Written By: Rich Agata

I know a man
he don’t make promises no more
“I did all I can,” he said to the floor
And followed his tears to the door

I know a woman
she whispers prayers in the night
“I won’t be free, unless I fight,”
she cried as she turned out the light

Don’t turn your back on love again
Don’t you know it’s not supposed to end
All lovers should start as friends
Don’t turn your back on love again

I know a man
he contends dreams can come true
“It all depends on me and you,”
he said to himself in his room

I know a woman
she plays with life’s flickering flame
“I’ll be no man’s wife, I won’t play that game,”
she said, “I’m not ready to tame.”

Don’t turn your back on love again
Don’t you know it’s not supposed to end
All lovers should start as friends
Don’t turn your back on love again

By The Door

Written By: Rich Agata

How can I complain
When I can see with both of my eyes
And how am I to blame
When nobody believes my lies

It’s time for me to run away
Just like a million times before
You never really thought I’d stay
That’s why you left my guitar by the door...by the door

How come I feel burned
Is it because I’m cold as ice
When will I ever learn
To never take my own advice

It’s time for me to run away
Just like a million times before
You never really thought I’d stay
That’s why you left my guitar by the door...by the door

I want a love you can’t buy at the store
Or get it on sale on the floor
I want a lover I’ll always adore, who’s never a bore,
I don’t care if she snores
If kisses were rain she would pour...
I want more,
I want more

So, how can I complain
(it’s getting better [all the time])
When I can see with both of my eyes
And how am I to blame
(it’s getting better [all the time])
When nobody believes my lies

It’s time for me to run away
Just like a million times before
You never really thought I’d stay
That’s why you left my guitar by the door...by the door
