"Indie Spotlight"

March 25, 2008

Ever hear a band and just ask yourself "Why aren’t these guys signed yet?" That’s the first question I asked myself when I heard the Richard Andrew Experiment. I first heard of these guys from a mutual friend and while I didn’t take to the name right away, when I heard the first song on their MySpace profile, I was hooked. Richard, Chris, Stephen and Tom weave breath-taking songs that you just can’t help listening to.

Their first single, Enough is Enough is a soulful mix of rock, folksy influences and a haunting vocal track that really makes you take notice. Richard’s voice reminds me of Darius Rucker, but that is a shallow comparison as Richard has an extra umph to his voice that you never heard from any Hootie and the Blowfish song. Perhaps it’s the experience that backs up the vocals. Richard’s life wasn’t always about making music and he’s done a lot of living to sing about.

Just one listen to the songs makes it obvious where their heart and soul lies.

Bio

In 1993 Richard Andrew, singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, responded to an altar call in a California State Prison. After serving his sentence for a drug related charge, he was released in January of 1994. He honored the commitment he made to Christ while still in prison, and immediately began serving in a local church following his release. Within a year Richard was a fulltime guitarist on his church's worship team. In 1995 Richard stepped out at the suggestion of his pastor, and began to sing... for the first time in his life! And by the year's end, he would pen the lyrics and melody to his 1st original song, "Until the Savior Comes Back."

By mid-1996, Richard was serving a local church in the high desert of California as worship leader. He would go on to complete the requirements in becoming an ordained minister, and participated in many church planting projects. The pioneering of churches gave Richard a front row seat to watch God call people unto Himself. With every new decision for Christ, the church-plants would grow by leaps and bounds. For many years, Richard would spend 40+ weekends a year strapping on his guitar for community outreaches, proclaiming the Gospel to a hurting world.

Eventually, Richard would introduce his original music to his local church. Word spread fast, and invitations started to pour in from all over the high desert, and throughout Southern California. Churches, schools, coffee houses, rehabs, and even in parking lots... this is where you could find Richard, his guitar, and a stool.

Many of his songs were shelved, because Richard thought he couldn't effectively communicate the music without a full band. As he wrote he knew that a guitar and stool wouldn't do them justice, so many of the songs just sat. By late 2004, after much prayer, new friends would breathe new life into the music, and Richard Andrew would begin an 'experiment' to see how God would use his fully produced music for ministry.

The Lord's faithfulness has endured as Richard's band has gone through line-up changes. Today Richard's faith has been joined with: Chris McCaffrey on drums, Tom Shepherd on lead guitar and Stephen Peery on bass. These three men have carried Richard into a new season, as they sustain his thought provoking lyrics and familiar melodies at conferences, festivals, churches, rallies, schools and outreaches throughout the state of California.

With many notable accomplishments during the past three years, including hundreds of 1st time decisions for Christ, and two independent EP releases, Richard has entered 2008 with a vision to see a full-length project recorded. After closing out 2007 with a performance at the Anaheim Convention Center for the Foursquare NEXTGEN Summit, 2008 has brought many LIVE ministry opps, a feature in the Anniversary Issue of RELEVANT Magazine as part of the 2-page spread for IndieHeaven.com, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead worship for NASCAR at the California Speedway, for the drivers, the owners, their families, and the pit crews. The new year is off to a great start!

Richard Andrew is the Worship Leader at The Rivers Edge Church in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
