This is a record with an enormous appeal; the broken fractured heart that drives the songs and the materials that they are built from combine so well together that they prove almost addictive. The songs are like wreckage ripped from a palace of song - they are base coats that allow rawness to show through. ‘This Same Heart’ is a voice and acoustic guitars, emotion and music trying to make sense of something that is unreasonable, ‘Blue’ is cut from the same cloth as the stately melancholia of Sophia. The songs themselves are like fragments of longer narratives and he fully inhabits the characters marooned in them, his croaky sing-speak perfect for ‘Ballad of a Skinwalker’ whilst a more hopeful voice narrates ‘Butterflies and Coyotes’. ‘Romeo 58’ is a 50’s song story as performed by the Tall Dwarves.

‘Londoner’s Guide to Southland’ is like a drunken dream, voices popping up out of nowhere as the tune staggers around, occasionally tries to gets to its feet, has moments of lucidity and a suitably sing-along chorus with rambling half-sensible verses. ‘Hold On’ is an altogether different type of a dream; this one is rooted in anxiety, the persistent percussive throb of the guitar replicating the aching tiredness of too many nights spent in shallow sleep waiting for the phone to ring, the vocals mumbling like they don’t want to be clear about the subject and all the while the screen door in your mind bangs on its loose hinge. Each of these songs is unremarkable in themselve - put them together and they really start to add up to something, and by the time you get to the mandolin inspired ‘Amazing Grace’ – which for once actually sounds like it comes from someone who knows what wretched is – you want to learn more, to listen again and immerse yourself in these disjointed scenes. As a bonus the first 100 come with an individual photograph: mine shows an empty highway and ugly town and a beautiful mountain and if that doesn’t sum up the record, then nothing does.

Het hoesje is niet echt aantrekkelijk, en de band heeft ook een wat saaie suffe naam, Richard and The Pallbearers. Als je de cd opzet spring je ook niet echt overeind bij de eerste tonen, dit was mij eerste indruk bij het ontvangen en beluisteren van "Chaste Machine", maar we blijken hier uiteindelijk toch echt wel met een onnadrukkelijk meesterwerkje te maken te hebben. Vooreerst het hoesje. Bij de eerste oplage, zijnde100 stuks, krijgt ieder exemplaar van deze "Chaste Machine" een andere foto van de Engelse fotograve Claire Chambers, die je allemaal kan bewonderen op de site: www.richardandthepallbearers.com . Voor mijn exemplaar, kreeg ik 'Open Range', Nevada toegestuurd. Zoals onlangs regisseur Andrew Douglas zingende zuiderling Jim White filmde in een eindeloze speurtocht langs kerken, kapperszaken, kroegen, en kolenmijnen van het mysterieuze Amerika. Zo vertrok de uit St. Louis, Missouri, komende Richard Paul Davis naar Tulsa, Oklahoma om een kleine vergelijking te maken, om aldaar als sessiemuzikant te gaan werken. Al vlug leerde hij diverse instrumenten bespelen, waardoor hij op zijn debuut bijna alles alleen heeft volgespeeld, en het resultaat laat ons denken aan een Frank Black of zelfs de reeds vernoemde White. Waaraan we invloeden van Lou Reed, Iron and Wine en Neil Young aan toevoegen. In de godsdienstwaanzin, ongepolijste countrymuziek en het raadselachtige landschap van dat deel van de VS zoekt Richard Paul Davis ook zijn inspiratie. Davis heeft een aangename maar niet erg expressieve of markante stem. Hij moet het dus van zijn liedjes hebben. Dat wordt eigenlijk gelijk al duidelijk als je meteen vanaf het begin goed naar de teksten gaat luisteren. Die zijn scherp en tegelijk ook gevoelig. De melodietjes die Davis vervolgens onder die teksten zet zorgen ervoor dat zijn liedjes je niet meer los laten. De arrangementen zijn zoals dat hoort - volledig bedoeld om elk liedje uitstekend tot zijn recht te laten komen. En dat op een uiterst bescheiden manier. Davis brengt zijn liedjes vrij ingetogen, en op de goede momenten levert Deb Driscoll een heel mooie tweede stem. Luister maar eens naar "The Pacifist" en "Blue", waar ook gitarist Greg Ramirez op een losse manier excelleert. Geen overrompelende plaat die je meteen in je nekvel pakt, maar meer een langzame binnensluiper. Vooral die prachtige liedjes worden steeds mooier, zoals de schitterende akoestische cover van "Amazing Grace", de enige cover van de cd. Davis dwingt op een rustige manier aandacht af. En als luisteraar word je dubbel beloond als blijkt dat het album steeds maar beter wordt, bij elke draaibeurt. Richard Paul Davis mag wat mij betreft meteen in het rijtje 'Voortreffelijke Singer/Songwriters' worden opgenomen.

Richard And The Pallbearers - Chaste Machine
Mijn opa leerde me achterstevoren de trap aflopen. Tegendraads de goede kant opgaan. Nog altijd denk ik aan hem. De opa van Richard Paul Davis, Harold Q. Davis, leerde hem muziek maken. Nog altijd denkt hij aan hem. Niet dat er iets van dit alles in de muziek terug te horen is. Ik bedoel, natuurlijk is dit terug te horen, maar je zult nooit weten wat je hoort. Hij komt oorspronkelijk uit St. Louis, Missouri, deze Richard Paul Davis en leerde, voordat hij naar Tulsa, Oklahoma vertrok om als sessiemuzikant te gaan werken, diverse instrumenten bespelen. Met zijn familie (ook wel The Davis Clan genaamd) speelde hij in het christelijke circuit. Hetgeen meteen de curieuze verwijzing naar Omroep IJsselmond op zijn site verklaart. Programma’s als In En Om De Kerk, Samen In De Naam en Glory Of Gospel spreken boekdelen. Toch is hier, behalve het feit dat Richard Paul Davis een mooie akoestische cover van Amazing Grace heeft opgenomen en Christ who saved me bedankt, geen sprake van een typisch christelijk product. Davis klinkt op dit bijna geheel door hem zelf volgespeelde album (ook de drums) als een kruising tussen Jim White en Michael Knott. Al zal de laatste naam mensen die nooit naar Omroep IJsselmond luisteren niets zeggen. En misschien die luisteraars zelf ook wel niet. Davis noemt zelf, naast White, ook Iron & Wine. En ja, The Same Heart is inderdaad erg Sam Beamig. Twee werkelijk meesterlijke liedjes bevat het in een oplage van 100 stuks verschijnende Chaste Machine (elk exemplaar krijgt een andere foto, ze zijn allemaal op de site van Davis te zien): het titelnummer en het machtige The Pacifist. In Chaste Machine zingt hij, net zoals zo vaak op dit album, een veelzeggende metafoor.

The Pacifist, waarin Davis wordt bijgestaan door zangeres Deb Driscoll, is door de galmend zingende stem van Davis van huiver doortrokken. To love is to be at war zegt hij er zelf over. De andere liedjes zijn goed maar ook wat vlak. Zowel qua geluid als qua compositie. Al herstelt hij zich enigszins met Hold On (Outside Of Topeka). Een mooi en bijzonder uitgevoerd debuut dus, dit Chaste Machine. Dat misschien toch wel meer boodschappen bevat dan aanvankelijk in het winkelwagentje leken te liggen.
