Biography

Aged just 22, and already completing 120 festivals in the small Australian market, this young musician is blazing a hot trail. Not only the number of festivals, but the number of invite backs is testimony to his popularity.
Australian singer/songwriter Richard Perso is a multi-instrumentalist who single-handedly redefines the phrase one-man band. Sitting on a stomp box with a drum pedal under his left foot and a tambourine under his right, Perso strums on one of his many guitars, and hollers like a 1930's bluesman in his low-range bluesy voice. All of Persos guitars have two pick-ups, one of which runs clean acoustic directly to the desk. The second from a P90 under the strings runs into an effects pedal board that he controls with his feet when he is not busy controlling the kick drum or tambourine.Additionally, all of Persos music is created live on stage without any backing tracks. On top of all this intense musical action, his trademark is adding in some notes played on one of his three didgeridoos.

Quickly becoming one of the most popular musical acts at many recent festivals and performances in Australia, Perso who hails from Yackandandah in North-East Victoria has found himself outranking many of the headline performers.Recently at the Mt. Beauty Music Festival, the singer/songwriter was ranked by festival-goers in the top three acts, even outscoring the icons of the Australias hottest blues performers.

Many blues followers predict the rising star will be the future of blues and folk music. Chris Atwell from Tamar Valley festival said "We opened with Richard as we wanted to start the festival with a bang. What an understatement when Richard exploded onto the stage"
In December 2008, Perso was invited to perform at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival Rolling Stone Live event as one of the four hottest up-and-coming guitarists/performers. The event, hosted by Rolling Stone Magazine and Gibson Guitars, featured world-class rock, roots, and classical guitar acts, so as an up and coming musician, playing in the show was an extremely high honor. Perso was the baby of the team but held up strongly with the rest of the performers.

Perso continues to win awards for his vocal and instrumental talents all across Australia. At the National Folk Festival during Easter 2009, he was awarded the Lis Johnston Memorial Award for Vocal Excellence and in 2008 at the Wagga Wagga Jazz and Blues Festival, he was awarded the Best Young Blues Performer Award two years running.

A rapid rise for this young man. First festival aged 15, Adelaide Guitar at 17, National Folk and Woodford at 18. By 19 he has recorded in New York and toured East Coast USA and Canada. He has been back to New York for his second CD in 2012 and a further Canadian tour invitation is in line for 2013. The trail being blazed is becoming more impressive every year.

To his followers, its amazing that all this talent came from a beaten up old guitar that a lady from church gave to him when he was just 13 years old. Ever since that moment, Perso mainly self-taught and established himself as an avid busker, first starting busking to earn money for a new electric guitar. The following year Perso was introduced to 12 string slide guitar which is now a feature of much of his music.

Soon after he discovered the slide and open tuning, he added several other instruments and effects. Pretty soon, there was no stopping the performers ambition and talent. He quickly added a stomp box, tambourine and in 2008, added his signature didgeridoo to his performances.

Now, Perso is constantly working to perfect his own personal style, a style that has earned him such rave reviews as Amazing vocals and sensational guitar and, simply, he gives me goose bumps.. "I wanted to start the festival with a bang, but he exploded onto stage. What an opening!"

Festival performance in the last couple of years include:

Stanfest (Canada), Ottawa Blues Festival (Canada), Calgary Blues (Canada), Canmore Folk Festival (Canada), Stewart Park (Canada), National Folk Festival (3 Times) Woodford Folk Festival (twice), Blues on Broadbeach (twice), Wintermoon Festival, Mt Beauty Music Festival, Bendigo Blues Festival (twice), Apollo Bay Music Festival, Maldon Folk Festival, Man from Snowy River Festival, Knox Festival, Melbourne Didgeridoo Festival (three times), Cool Summer Festival, Caloundra Music Festival,Turning Wave Celtic Festival (3 times),

Clouds

Written By: Richard Perso

Welcome to my life.
What you see is where I’m at.
When I’m up on my cloud you can’t touch me,

No one can bring me down.
I’ll never hit the ground

Welcome to my world.
I don’t change it, it’s at the mercy of the wind.
When I’m up on my cloud,
The world beneath, it cannot let me down.
I’m rising through the storm.
Searching for others with silver lining.

No one can bring me down.
I’ll never hit the ground.

When I’m up on my could.
You can’t touch me, you cannot bring me down.

Fork In The Road

Written By: Richard Perso

I went for a walk just the other day and I don’t know how but I lost my way,
Seems like all I had left to say was in which direction is home?
So I turned around to the beaten old track, trying to find my way back but I took a wrong turn and found that I was lost.
I walked East for a while looking for the light of day but the sun never rose so I made my own way the question then my friend was which path do I take at the next fork in the road?

Tell me which way do I go, at the next fork in the road, tell me which way do I go?

So I kept on walking past the old cross roads where the Devil asked me if I’d like to sell my soul, I said “Thanks for the offer, but I’ll have to say hell no”. He said “Son what’s the hurry why you leaving so fast? Is it cos of all the stories that you’ve heard in the past?” Then he said “Don’t worry, the side effects won’t last”. I said “Mr. Devil, one thing I know is you can’t love music if you’ve got no soul” and I passed him on bye on my way down to, the next fork in the road.

So when it comes to a fork in the road make sure the one you take leads you back home or you’ll wind up somewhere else.
But if you’re not trying to find your way home, you can pick by saying eenie meenie miny moe and then the road that you take, is the one you follow, till the next fork in the road.

Soul Storm-New CD

Written By: Richard Perso

Soul storm:

V1
Well I’m gonna climb to the top of a mountain
And stand in the presence of a storm.
Wait for the lightning to strike me.
Just so you know where I’m coming from.

V2
I’m gonna feel the wind rush through my hair.
Let the rain wash away my fear.
Listen to the fury of the thunder.
I don’t need anyone.
I’ve found my happiness here.

Chorus:
There’s something building inside of me.
I’m gonna let it take control.
I used to be so naive.
Now I’m not so hot and cold.

V3
I’ve seen the moon rise over the ocean.
I’ve watched the sun dive into the sea.
I’ve been there to welcome the new dawn
And all of these things make up the different parts of me.

V3
Just like the tree living by the river.
My roots they grew so deep.
And it took a strong wind to lift me up.
Well I might have moved on but the memories are mine to keep.

Chorus.
There’s something building inside of me.
I’m gonna let it take control.
I used to be so naive.
Now I’m not so hot and cold.

Solitary Man-New CD

Written By: Richard Perso

Solitary man.

V1
Slipping through my fingers
There goes another chance.
Too quick too fine to hold on.
Another sign to show me I’m a solitary man.
My poor heart and I just live alone.
If love would overcome me and mend my tortured soul
My loneliness would live no more.

Chorus 1:
But I do still think about her.
Even though she lives a little too far.

V2
These memories that haunt me
Are flooded with false hope
Existing only to remind me
Of the love I never showed.
Because of my hesitation
I missed a chance to hold her heart.
My procrastination tore any chance I had apart.

Chorus 2:
But I do still think about her.
Even though I know she’s safe in his arms.

V3
This solitary man well he has walked a many mile.
If it were for a lover it would all be worth his while.
Telling her I loved her seemed a task far too hard.
But hiding my true feelings never got me all that far.

Chorus 3:
And I do, I want to tell her.
Even though I’m scared of what she might say.
And I know I have to tell her
Before she’s known to me as the one that got away.

An Open Mind - New CD

Written By: Richard Perso

An open mind.

V1
I could walk in the shadow of the light
For the rest of my days.
It’s a little more appealing for me
To find my own way.
I’ve been caught up in a net
Woven with doubt.
Gotta take the chance when the sun shines through
And I see a way out.

Chorus:
I’ve gotta be my own saviour
This time round.
I’m the only one who could ever
Get me off this ground.
Well I’ve paid my dues
And I’ve gotta leave
Because and open mind’s the only way for me to see.

V2
Don’t peak early.
Keep your head above the water.
Take a deep breath every now and then.
Breath deeply as you ought to.
The rhythm of your heart
Is the pace at which you set your life.
Step through the haze and take the plunge.
Go straight to the other side.

Chorus.
I’ve gotta be my own saviour
This time round.
I’m the only one who could ever
Get me off this ground.
Well I’ve paid my dues
And I’ve gotta leave
Because and open mind’s the only way for me to see.

Bridge:
You know I could touch the sky
If I was just a little taller.
There’s no boundaries around out lives
Because we make out own choices.
No matter where you’ve been or left
Keep the doors wide open.
And if you’re afraid to speak your thoughts
Let them use their own voices.

Love Is A Mental Illness - New CD

Written By: Richard Perso

Love is a Mental Illness.

V1
You might be looking to find
But it’s no good if you can’t see.
When you’re walking blind
Things aren’t always what they seem no.
You put a rose pink filter on the lens of your life
And forgot about sense while you balance on the blade of a knife.

Chorus:
Love is a mental Illness baby.
It’s got me locked up.
I’m going crazy.
There’s no way out.
I’ve looked below and above.
And that’s the price you pay when you let yourself fall in love.

V2
So I’ll bury myself
Deep in this heavy heart
And you can dig me out just before I start to fall apart.
Well It’s a two edged sword all of this give and take.
And there’s a margin for error that I think I might just break.

Chorus
Love is a mental Illness baby.
It’s got me locked up.
I’m going crazy.
There’s no way out.
I’ve looked below and above.
And that’s the price you pay when you let yourself fall in love.

Bridge:
Here I stand as a willing victim.
There’s no point trying to outsmart the system.
I’m too far gone there’s no going back.
And I’m caught in the jaws of a full blown emotion attack.

Chorus.
Love is a mental Illness baby.
It’s got me locked up.
I’m going crazy.
There’s no way out.
I’ve looked below and above.
And that’s the price you pay when you let yourself fall in love.

Say It Like You Mean It

Written By: Richard Perso

Say it like you mean it:

V1
I’ve been waiting to hear something
But the trouble you see I’m not listening.
I might move on I lend my ear
But bad is the only news to come out of here.

V2
We’ve been digging, digging for days
Barely scratching the surface.
Turning the other way.
Raising our voice when others dare to speak.
Trying to uncover what we think they keep.

Chorus:
Some play with fire cos it keeps them warm.
Others might like to get caught in the storm.
When we don’t agree with what we’ve seen
And you’ve got something to say
Say it like you mean it.

V3
Surrounded by fools, liars and cheats.
Fed to the wolves just like lost sheep.
Telling themselves what they want to hear.
That’s how it plays out when you live in fear.

V4
It doesn’t matter what we hear these days.
Most of us choose to believe it anyway.
Truth is an extra if you pay a little more.
Does each man have his price
Or is he already bought?

Chorus.
Some play with fire cos it keeps them warm.
Others might like to get caught in the storm.
When we don’t agree with what we’ve seen
And you’ve got something to say
Say it like you mean it.

Bridge.
So don’t try and tell me that I can’t make a change.
I do it through the words that I choose to arrange.
I don’t wanna dwell on what might have been.
I get up, I stand up and I say what I mean.
