"Richard and MM and Mickey Finn's"

When I was first told about Richard Schultz and the Miracle Men I was a bit skeptical because I was told it was the "kind of music that couldn't be explained". So to see for myself, I went to a recent show. Now I can understand why their musical style is difficult to explain. The entertainment is wonderful and the music is very well written with a twist of what I call old school Violent Femmes. Add to that the hand drums and you definitely have something different that won't make you want to leave after the first song!  The lead singer, Richard brings a flare of creativity with a style that is all his own. I couldn't wait to see what he came up with next. This is one band that you should definitely check out and I was sorry when the show ended.

Bio

Singer/songwriter Richard Schultz formed the Miracle Men out of the ashes of his previous project The Special People Club. Starting with his successful solo acoustic act as a base he set about creating a band that would be sympathetic to his varied compositions and eclectic, theatrical vision.

Richard also wanted to explore unconventional percussion forms and instruments and to that end he selected former SPC bassist Andy Boje and began looking for percussionists.

Alex Mohr responded to an ad placed on a tribal drumming website and soon joined the band. The trio then experimented with drum machines and various second drummers to find their unique rhythmic approach.

The three original Miracle Men then recorded their debut CD BORN WITHOUT EYESIGHT with a few guest musicians. (Isis Prentice- percussion, Lynn Janese- percussion, Dave Honeycutt- drums, Jay Ingraham- saxophone.)

As the band prepared to release the CD Richard sought to expand the band to reflect the fuller sound they were able to achieve on the record- first adding lead guitarist Bill Arab (who had previously filled on bass for the band when Andy was unavailable) and then drummer Matt Michaelsen, also an SPC alum.

Further it was decided to include Richard's brother, the band's lighting designer Matthew Schultz as a full band member in recognition for his tremendous contribution to their live show. Mathew soon began contributing backing vocals to the set as well. Matthew and Richard's voices are uncannily similar, making for another striking and unusual effect.

The band will release their debut CD August 30, 2008 and play many shows across the region this summer in support of it.

The band plans to record a follow up with the entire live band in the fall of 2008 for a summer 2009 release. This upcoming album will be entitled "Hiding Out In Treetops".
