"City native Rich Baumann honored in song writing competition"

Madison singer-songwriter and Sheboygan native Rich Baumann received a Runner Up award in the Song of the Year competition with his new song, “Battlefield.”

The song is about a World War II soldier who proudly goes to war, returns after his tour but never really comes home. The poignant lyrics can be applied to almost any veteran of war, which makes it a timeless classic.

“I wrote the song about my grandfather, so it is a personal piece of work that I wanted to share with everyone welcoming a soldier home. War changes people, even under the best circumstances,” said Baumann.

According to the competition’s website, Song of the Year is an international songwriting contest encouraging the art and discipline of songwriting. The group’s focus is to find songwriters while helping them network with professionals in the music industry.

Winners are determined by a panel of judges that includes Grammy Award winners and individuals from Rolling Stone and ABC television.

In being notified of his honor, Baumann received the following comments on his song: “‘Battlefield’ did extremely well in the contest as it received the Runner Up placement in the contest. The Runner Up placement shows that the song received extremely high scores and was found to be competitive with the winning songs. Only the top writers receive this placement.”

Baumann is a board member of the Madison Songwriters Guild and wrote the music and lyrics to Battlefield at an MSG songwriters retreat.

“Making time and space to focus on songwriting is the key to success. The MSG retreats are the perfect place to tap into your creativity,” said Baumann.
