Richelle L. Brown aka Cornbread, Has been killing the Atlanta Indie scene. With her soulful sound and Funky feel, she has taking the Atlanta scene by storm. While being constantly compared to Joanelle Monae and Missy Elliott, she is a 1 of a kind talent. College radio has embrassed songs from her 1st EP “The Example Project”. UGA radio in Athens has retired 2 of her songs from the #1 spot and is still gaining constant request. If you haven’t seen her perform live you are truely missing out. With her non stop energy and gift of drawing in the crowd has placed her position to be the next Soulful Funk Diva from the south. She has opened for Sunshine Anderson, Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs, Yelawolf, Bobby Creekwater, Playboy Tre, Jackie Chain and other signed artists. Atlanta artist Richelle L. Brown aka Cornbread has dropped a new video for the remix of "Blackberry Pie." The song appears on her latest project, Cornbread, Richelle & Me: The Groovetape. Her unbridled brand of funkiness has been under my skin for awhile now — at least since she introduced herself as the "Swagga Black Country Queen" back in 2009. Since then, she's been spreading herself around with solo efforts while singing background and collaborating with multiple Atlanta artists and MCs, from Aleon Craft to Alive and Well (Mike Flo and Ekundayo).
She's one of those artists that piques my curiosity because I never quite know what to expect from her. That and the fact that she seems to have an underlying fearlessness and playful energy that pushes her to experiment and explore, like a kid eager to break a few rules. So far it's taken her from electro-based future funk and dance grooves to vintage Funkadelic guitar wildouts featuring her unrestrained vocals — an old soul from a new school. Brown joins the movement of retro songstresses that are invading the hyperspace experience. Similar to the HipHop wave of the 90’s that garnered such artist as Missy Elliot; Richelle L. Brown is that new funk.
Her passion for music sparked during a time when V-103 had more than 10 songs in rotation, and her frequent regimen in Conyers, GA was sitting shotgun in her mother’s Eagle Summit Hatchback, driving down West Avenue or detouring the back streets as the sounds of The Funkadelics, R. Kelly, Parliament, Janet Jackson, Chaka Khan and Keith Sweat, resonated through her ears.
Fast forward over a decade and Richelle L. Brown’s introduction song, “Swagga Black Country Queen” is that 2010 vivid snapshot of an everyday southern socialite lifestyle, where candy colored Chevy Dunks parade down Peachtree, hipsters dance on the bar at the soundtable or congregate at MJQ, and ladies fashionably costumed sporting exclusive knee-hi Chuck Taylor’s under an 80’s vintage dress, showcasing what’s really meant by “country queen vintage exclusive”.
The debut EP, “The Example Project” will take you on a voyage of Open Experimental Music thoughtfully constructed to provoke an undeniable progression of music themed by that lifestyle with just the right balance of funk and mojo, that listeners have eagerly waited for.
