Bio

Rich Smith, native of Detroit’s Westside, grew up during a time when Hip-Hop was spreading across the globe to cities similar to his own. From his earliest days, he can remember being mesmerized by this sound as it expressed what he knew and what he recognized. In fact, he recalls standing on the edge of the bathtub so he could see himself in the mirror rapping with his sister. She had given him the name Ricky D after Slick Rick. So, since the beginning he has been a B-Boy from Detroit. Eventually, little Ricky D became Rich Smith.

Originally Rich took on the name, D. Rich, as it stood for Detroit Rich as he paid homage to one of his heroes, Malcolm X, nicknamed Detroit Red during his early years. Rich had always been writing rhymes and freestyling; however, he never put it to wax. On a chance meeting with up and coming DJ and producer, Don Kutta, that opportunity finally arrived.

After months of studio sessions, Rich opened up with his introductory EP, GetRich N The D. Boasting a strong delivery, commanding voice and an in-your-face approach similar to the likes of Chuck D, Ice Cube and DMX, Rich’s message was simple: “I’m just being me”. He then followed up with ATTN: Dis Jus N mixtape introducing himself further not only as formidable MC but a solid songwriter. Next, T. Smith, Rich’s brother and frequent collaborator, joined in as The black Smiths. Together they made a self-titled mixtape displaying content conducive to current trends. Rich became sharp as ever releasing a mixtape titled Universal. Rich furthered his skills releasing the concept album Approaching A Warzone EP to much acclaim. He writes what he feels and he lets the music guide him.

Now signed to Don Kutta’s independent record label, Fifty4 East Recordings, Rich is gearing up for much success with the next few releases. He continues to work hard recording, performing, writing and perfecting the flow to deliver some of the best Hip Hop he has to offer.
