"Review of Rick Holdin album "Still Holdin Out""

This is the second album that I have reviewed for singer/songwriter Rick Holdin. The first was Holdin Out from about three or so years ago, now Ricks latest an 11-tracker contains 10 self-penned and one country classic.
Rick is a shy guy who tends to hide his face under his cowboy hat; well he does on both albums sleeves. He is not so shy when it comes to songwriting though. His use of words is far reaching and his tunes are indeed a joy to listen to. So is his high tenor voice.
His style is very much country and his writing appears to come from the heart through his lived in lyrics. It starts with “No More Tears”—a gentle ballad that shows off Rick’s melodic voice perfectly, in the right hands this one could be a sure fire winner. “Battle On” ups the tempo and reminds me of cowboy gospel. “To The End” is a smooth as silk ballad filled with rich and meaningful words. “Good On You” presents a happy feel at exactly the right moment. Rick cleverly layers the harmonies in a similar style to the Glaser Brothers.
“Trust Your Heart” is a stunning love ballad by any standards. “Right With You” is another delight in proof that there are no album fillers on this release. “Yours” again a smashing thoughtful love ballad. The only cover is the splendid “Shenandoah Waltz” written by Clyde Moody and Chubby Wise—a diamond in a mine of diamonds.
“For Better Love” moves along at a pleasing pace that leads nicely into the passionate “Bayou Baby”—allowing Rick to use the higher register of his tenor voice superbly. “Another Lifetime” brings this fine album to a close and this reviewer wondering when this talent will be allowed to step out of the wings and take his well deserved centre stage. Hope reigns.
