"Coco Nights"

While I'm talking about music at BJ's, let me tell you about another seasoned performer who has been in our midst, off and on, for many years. Singer/songwriter Rick Kennedy knows a thing or two about a thing or two - such as life on the road and love gone wrong. Fortunately for us, he deals with the highs and lows of life by putting those feelings into beautiful, sometimes poignant poetry set to enchanting or raucous music, as the subject warents. Rick is the quintessential solo musician wearing his emotions on his musical sleeve and whose longest-lasting relationship is with his beloved guitar. The title of his newly released CD, From the Sublime to the Ridiculous, so aptly fits his music; and the cover photo featuring his collection of guitars plus a banjo, mandolin, dobro and fiddle is more than symbolic of his dedication to his music. I've only heard it since last night, a few live and some in the car, but I've heard enough to know that here is a story of a man's life - his life in Colorado, in Oregon, Ohio and other parts unknown to me, that have given him experiences that challenge the body and mind but inrich the soul; and it comes through in his songs. Keep on writing, Rick and keep on smiling. Be sure to ask for his originals when next you have the opportunity to hear him. (Coconut Times, July 27, 2007) - Coconut Times, Ocean City, MD

"When You Wanna Go Home"

Kennedy calls his style of art "Americana" and sub-categorizes himself as "country". I consider his collection campfire music with soul. The kind of songs one longs to hear with a fire pit and a cold beer. If you listen closely you can hear the speakers blowing from the force of his voice in songs like "Dream On Shining Star". Kennedy's voice may not always have the fine tuning of perfect pitch, but sometimes the dissonance in strained keys makes music that much more passionate. The fighting to be heard and the consistency is what make him great.

Songs like "Battered and Blue" may attract the attention of eyes which can hear alliteration, but when the song roles through the speakers and eyes land on lyrics, the fact that Rick Kennedy can tell an American story becomes plain to see as a broken down old dodge. Relating the feeling of struggling to convey one's own art and creativity often equates to feeling like "an old steering wheel" which has been "turned around so many times" that it's hard to know what's real. This is the way I have often felt about my project with Target Audience Magazine. Torn between wanting to express my own life as I hear it through inspiring songwriters and wanting to promote and expose those same artists with journalistic integrity. No wonder he has been recommended for fans of Bob Dylan and has opened for acts ranging from Bob Seger to Alice Cooper.

Like I've admitted, my integrity may be lacking and my efficiency is certainly questionable, but I know when I come back to review an artist like Rick Kennedy that the reason I run Target Audience Magazine is to help make a circle around the passions burning in all of us, we writers of songs painting our visions and dreams around a fire we long to keep hot while we sip on cold drink.

"Fighting Over Nothing" shows that same wholesome, country-style story telling which makes American history something to read. A narration about a "crazy boy" who continually drinks too much whiskey and loses sight of what he holds most dear. The way the words are twisted through the chords captures the "lost my job, wife and dog" feeling in most country tunes. After reading the lyrics and listening, I can visualize the poor guy trying to find himself at the bottom of a bottle of whiskey only to wake up wondering where his wife went. Good stuff for country bars or late night tents.

"Folk Festival Singer/Songwriter Showcase"

Rick Kennedy performs a uniquely personal sound drawn from rock/country/folk roots, reminiscent of the college coffee houses that were his beginning. Moving quickly to a lead guitarist for popular regional bands in Ohio (Eli Radish, Buckeye Buckeroos), Colorado (Airborne, Emersom Biggins) and for the David Alan Coe band, Kennedy has toured and traveled, sometimes with band and sometimes on a personal journey, capturing all in his compositions. Most recently performing at music festivals and smaller intimate venues, the music he plays is his own, whether originals or unique cover interpretations. Playing “anything with strings,” Rick is as comfortable on the mandolin, banjo and keyboard as he is playing the guitar, accompanied by the harmonica and a distinctive voice. - New Jersey Folk Festival--Rutgers 4/25/09

"Rootstime Belgium CD Review"

Review January 2009 RootsTime Music, Belgium http://rootstime.be/CD%20REVIEWS/2009/2009-JANUARI10.htm
<Translation>What strikes first about Rick Kennedy’s two most recent Cds is how strong his voice and style are, and the similarity to the work of John Hiatt. The oldest, "From The Sublime To The Ridiculous" from 2007, is a compilation of eleven of his own songs from the past decades brought together. Included are the songs "I Can’t Go Anywhere," "Beggar At Your Door" (with fine harmonica work), "UNREQUITED Love Song" (with equally great slide guitar), "Waiting To Hear From You" and "Desperation Rain Dance". He has the same hiccup in what husky voice à la John Hiatt. Our favorite songs from his first CD are: "Dream On Shining Star" and the CD-closing "All Havin 'Fun On Delmarva. "When You Want to Go Home", his latest full CD(2008) this time contains 12 songs of his own design. The album was produced by Suzanne Mallow who also provides backup vocals. This CD consists mainly of quiet semi-acoustic alt-country songs. Of course we also have a preferred list of spirits: "Rich Man's Gold", "Shadows Of Love" and "Palm Of Your Hand". Striking in this new album is that there are revised versions of songs that we are on "From The Sublime To The Ridiculous". But if the songs are good, they remain good, regardless of which version is heard. These two CDs end up in any case, somewhere in my private collection so that I can return to them and listen at the appropriate time. _ (valsam)

O.a. in de songs “I Can’t Go Anywhere”, “Beggar At Your Door” (met knap mondharmonicawerk), “Unrequited Love Song” (met even knappe slide gitaar), “Waiting To Hear From You” en in “Desperation Raindance” vertoont hij diezelfde snik in de wat hese stem à la John Hiatt. Onze voorkeursongs zijn echter “Dream On Shining Star” en de cd-afsluiter “All Havin’ Fun On Delmarva”. From The Sublime To The Ridiculous” konden horen. _(valsam)
