Biography

Lucky Sevens, Lucky You…
The Hot Press in Ireland described Ricko Donovan's live performance as “a steamroller of a show, he gracefully rendered Irish songs. His own songs were engaging and captivating...”

Ricko’s live performances include a host of instruments, featuring the hammered dulcimer. The man of many strings leaves audiences spellbound performing his own great songs with a blend of traditional world music from Ireland and beyond. For his 2009 summer tour of the US Southwest, he engaged the services of loop effects. Playing both solo and with the support of outstanding musicians such as cellist Michael Kott, the performances are rooted in great songs which abound in both Lucky Sevens (2009) and The Kilmoon Road (2005).

Devil At My Door won Nashville's Spree Song Contest in the Alt/Country category in 1998. At theat time, Nashville was a hotbed for the resurgence of more exciting and innovative country styles. The song exemplifies this and is still a staple of the artist’s performance. Donovan decided to forego predictability and took off to travel the European continent in 98 with backpack and Dusty Strings hammered dulcimer, playing on streets, in cafes, in theatres, and clubs. He has busked on the streets of Amsterdam, Munich, Berlin. Madrid, Brussels, Barcelona, Dublin, London, Birmingham, Edinbugh and loves Europe. Settling on Madrid Spain and Counties Cork and Clare in Ireland, he remained until 2006. Graduating to a larger model hammer dulcimer built by Ardie’s Dulcimers, he began recording the Irish folk music that surrounded the beautiful Burren landscape where he made his home outside Doolin, a hotbed of Irish traditional music. Two Irish releases received critical acclaim in Spain, Ireland, Belgium and Germany. The Kilmoon Road is a fine folk album of Ricko's songs which featured some great West Clare musicians. It has sold over 1000 copies at shows and in select stores. The Laughing Silver String, a record of traditional Irish music garnered regular airlplay on Clare FM in Ireland. It has sold over 1000 copies worldwide. Ricko was the featured musician at Gregan's Castle Hotel in the Burren, County Clare from 2003-2005, delighting audiences regularly with his extensive Irish repertoire.
“He renders ballads with the greatest sensitivity and the rest with the reckless abandon of a steamrolling train with no brakes…”–The Clare Champion
"A skillfull master of a unique and beautiful instrument."-Cormac MacConnell, Clare FM Radio Ireland

Devil At My Door

Written By: Ricko Donovan

Last night she told me she was leavin
Last night she said she could take no more
This mornin waitin for the sunup
I heard the devil howlin at my door,
Heard the devil howlin at my door

Now the things he said were not kind
Fact is they made a grown man cry
I use to take a joy in living
Now Im beginnin to wonder why

Today the plans we made just dried up
Today I started drinkin like before
At noon I saw the rain clouds roll in,
I heard the devil howlin at my door

Now all that happiness we foretold
Remains a once-upon-a time
Forever I will keep our secrets
In this cold, cruel heart of mine

If love can never be forsaken
And hells a makin of our own
Then, her face etched eternal in my burnin dreams,
I heard the devil howlin at my door
I heard the devil howlin at my door
I heard the devil howlin at my door
I heard the devil howlin at my door!

This Crooked Line

Written By: Ricko Donovan

s for "This Crooked Line"
Like truckers pullin rigs in the middle of night
Star-crossed lovers in the pale moonlight
Its wanderlust that led me in
Now I can only begin again

You lose yourself and fall asunder
Drink the water and taste the wine
The flight of angels makes me wander
Makes me walk this crooked line (Chorus)

The straight and narrow makes me cry
Get pushed around and you learn to fly
To worlds beyond but then I find
Im just traveling in my mind

Ch.

Take this broken cup
Mend it and fill it up
And drink, drink, drink

Ch.

Thoughts will come and go like rain
Soak the pleasure and wring the pain
Its wanderlust that led me in
Now I can only learn all over again.

Just Some Girl

Written By: Ricko Donovan

Why you got that far off look in your eyes?
Why you look like you waiting for blue skies?
What's changed so much from yesterday?
Make the sun don't shine and you don't make hay.
It's nothing much in all the world,
it's just some girl, it's just some girl.

Why you walk the earth so slow
with tiny voice and head hung low?
What's the matter, after all,
when sun don't shine, and bird don't call?
It's nothing much in all the world
it's just some girl, it's just some girl.

You don't remember yesterday,
and all your dreams have run away
Don't run away with fool ideas
Keep it cool beneath hot tears
It's nothing much, for all the world,
it's just some girl, it's just some girl.

Liscannor Bay

Written By: Ricko Donovan

what happened on that day last summer in Galway
thought we'd had a start that night i got a broken heart
promised you'd return now you've left me here to yearn
i guess that's just the way it went leaves me tired and feeling spent as the wind whips round liscannor bay
i guess i'll hang another day
fishermen haul in their nets one by one they're placing bets
if i struck out to sea could i bring you back to me
fourty miles down the coast galway's summer is a ghost
i guess that's just the way it goes love just gets you in it's throes as the wind whips round liscannor bay
i guess i'll hang another day
come in the middle of night come when i'm not feeling right
come before night turns to day come and get carried away
come on a midnight train come and release me again
cause i dont think it's right when halfway through the night
i wake up full of dreams a world away it seems
hurricane ceaseless wind and pounding rain
i guess that's just the way it goes love just gets you in it's throes as the wind whips round liscannor bay
i guess i'll hang around another day...

Love Town

Written By: Ricko Donovan

lisdoon's carnal carnival, i know you don't take this seriously
september's silly love fest, the joke's on me
i'm always kiddin' round, maybe more than i should
i just love to see you laugh, if i only could
i give a joke i take a drink
but there's more going on here than maybe you think

sometimes i'll go dancin' drinkin' and such
it's then i don't think about you too much
weavin' in and out of drunks, who're lookin' for a match
feels like firewalkin', but the fire's down the hatch

she punched at the air, i rolled on the floor
and when i got up, i started drinkin more
we're all hangin in love town
love town, love town, love town
us and them

late-nite party girl, come lookin' for a young man
she said i'd like to find one, as fast as i can
she said would you be interested in more than a chat?
i said i think i can deal with that, and where you sleepin' at?

upstairs at the savoy, i stumbled into a bed
i started talkin', and other things instead
i said you're welcome to love town
your love town your love town
not me

when the bars have all closed and streamers pulled down
i'm in a field in the pissin rain wearing a frown
i make believe you're standin' there blockin' wind
our lips combine, you say 'where have you been?'
and I say welcome to love town
welcome my baby to love town love town
in me

Lucky Sevens

Everyone is living way too fast, how they gonna make this short life last?
I was in the rat race for a while, and damned if I could run across a smile
Checkout’s 11 she’s 22 and gets her kicks
When they spin 33 rpm records on our radio
So when you’re 44 doin 55 on 66
Them lucky 77s are somewhere down the road

No use waitin on the promised land, I’ve had all the holy rollin I can stand
And good things come to those who wait, while those in a hurry are perpetually late
Checkout’s 11 she’s 22 and gets her kicks
When they spin 33 rpm records on our radio
So when you’re 44 doin 55 on 66
Them lucky 77s are somewhere down the road

Life’s sure faster but damn sure not better, and no-one takes the time to write a letter
But I’m cruising along under a clear blue sky, in my little bit of heaven before I die
Checkout’s 11 she’s 22 and gets her kicks
When they spin 33 rpm records on our radio
So when you’re 44 doin 55 on 66
Them lucky 77s are somewhere down the road
