All I Know (Could’ve Been Jesus)

I was walking through the city
On a cold December night
I guess I took a wrong turn
I went left instead of right
I found myself in a part of town
I didn’t know was even there
I was going round in circles
Running late and heading nowhere

When a man inside a doorway
Suddenly appeared with a charcoal face
And a ripped up coat not a single trace of fear
He ask me if I’d lost my way
I said “Guess it seems to be”
He said “Stay between the white lines”
“Follow the right signs”
“You’ll be where you want to be”

Oh could’ve been Jesus in that old brown coat
Looking to the doorway for some shelter from the cold
Just an old survivor, looking for some hope
Or could’ve been Jesus for all I know

In a big hospital hallway
Doc gave me the news
He said “It’ll be a long recovery”
“There be a few things you can’t do”
I said “If I can’t play my old guitar”
“I might not want to try”
Feeling sorry for myself
Just about to cry

When a mother pushing slowly
A Boy of five or six
Braces on his legs and arms
No surgery could fix
I forgot about my troubles
As they went rollin by
He said “Ma you do the driving”
“You keep driving”
“And I’ll read you the signs”

Could’ve been Jesus in that old wheelchair
Life’s a miracle, but it isn’t always fair
Just one more survivor
Looking for some hope
Or it could’ve be Jesus for all I know

Could’ve been Jesus in that old folks home
Doesn’t recognize his family
Spends most his time alone
Just an old survivor
Wanting to go home
Or it could’ve been Jesus for all I know
Oh, it could’ve been Jesus for all I know
