Ricky

Ulric Husbands or Ricky Husbands is popularly known in Brazil as ‘O JAMAICANO’ He was born in Georgetown, Guyana, South America to immigrant Caribbean parents. His music career started in church when he was encouraged by the Elders of his church to sing at almost all church events.
As a young man he met Vibert Aaron a drummer and producer. Vibert recognized Ricky’s talent and introduced him to the professional world. He first started with the Young Ambassadors and then he linked up with Cutis MG’s, regarded as one of the hottest bands at the time. He was given the opportunity to open shows for some famous Calypsonians – the Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener and other well known artistes such as Boris Gardener, Stevie Wonder and the Maytals. Ricky’s sojourn in music led him to Rukiza Okera a talented guitarist and composer. Rukiza encouraged Ricky to record some of his songs. Their partnership took them to Suriname. In Suriname, they met Antoon Sang Ayang of the Ventu Studios.
Success came almost immediately, he recorded three hit song “Birds On a Fence’, ‘Oneness’ and ‘Blowing Hot’ These songs rocked Suriname, the Caribbean and some parts of Europe”. These hit songs were distributed under the well known name Duehsmo Syndicate guaranteeing record sales. In 1986 Duehsmo Syndicate performed before an audience of over 40,000 persons at Suriname’s football Stadium backed by Steel Pulse in an opening act. Duehsmo Syndicate performed in Brazil in 1987 touring the following cities, Maranhao, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia and Theater Castor Alves Bahia. In 1990 Ricky returned to Bahia to work with Roland Pro Audio. During that time Jimmy Cliffy a Jamaican reggae star was producing his break out album by Caesar Napoli. Caesar was also producing Ricky’s demo and he invited him to sing with Mr., Cliff. Ricky recorded another hit song ‘Harder Now’.
Ricky spent seven years with Jimmy Cliff. He then decided to go solo using the same band members but renaming the band Zeed Resolution. It took awhile for Zeed Resolution to gain recognition by local musicians. However Ricky continued with his band at shopping centers where digital sound machine played, shopping piedage, lapa, ponto alto, itaigara, and at aero club plaza shows. His perseverance and actions caught the attention of radio and TV stations and some newspapers. Ricky and his band were soon invited to open shows. He opened shows for Gregory Isaacs, Starlights, Chiclete Com, Banana Lasso and Israel Vibration. The band also performed in local shows: Fenagro and Eco Arts Festival 2002. Carnival 2003 along with Coracao Rastafari was also a part of the band’s acts.
Ricky’s travels took him to Jamaica, the reggae capital of the world. There he recorded his upcoming album ‘Believe in the Oneness’. While in Jamaica he met some of Jamaica’s top artistes in Kingston and St. Ann’s Bay the birthplace of Bob Marley.
