Biography

Ricky Small grew up in rural Central Maine, in the town of Skowhegan, in a very creative and artistic family. From an early age, his parents nurtured an affinity for entertaining, and Ricky took every opportunity to perform, ranging from community theater roles to regional and statewide choirs. It was his fourth grade teacher, however, who introduced him to acoustic guitar as a way to accompany his voice. By sophomore year, Ricky was writing his own material and reworks of songs by his favorite artists. Influenced by artists such as Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, and Paul Simon, Ricky’s early music took on a very Pop-friendly Folk sound until growing into his own unique blend of singer/songwriter.

Needing to nurture his passion for music, Ricky took his talents to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied songwriting and vocal performance. During his first year at Berklee he met Nolan Greene who became the first member of “The Talls”. The two formed an instant musical bond that they carried with them to San Diego in fall of ’08. Shortly after moving, Ricky and Nolan joined up with established locals musicians and brothers Keli and Tonga Ross-Ma’u. As a quartet they started playing to instant enthusiastic response. Having already become a fixture in the San Diego music scene, Ricky Small and the Talls are set to release their debut full-length album, which is self-titled.

As a front man, Ricky Small is an ever-evolving songwriter with a contagious charm and electric stage performance. His material demands attention, while instantly pulling in and soothing the listener. As a band, The Talls bring their leader’s infectious sound to another level with heavy grooves, funky jams, and professional use of dynamics. Ricky Small and The Talls are a whirlwind of talent and skill that is set to take them above and beyond.
