Biography

Rio By Night is an alt-pop/art rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia.

Frontwoman/songwriter Britt MacLeod takes inspiration from a wide range of musical styles and creates songs that are somehow both dark and catchy, thought-provoking yet danceable. Elements of pop, rock, jazz, soul, and folk make up the sound. MacLeod leads the project with her soulful voice and ukulele, and is joined by a talented core of musicians: Mike Lauder (drums), Paul Wilson (bass/synths), and Reggie Harvey (guitars).

The live shows are electric, fun, and always new and fresh. Stylistically, Rio By Night covers a lot of ground. Energetically, they consistently hit the roof.

Rio By Night's latest album, "Yet The World" is available now on iTunes/Apple Music, and Bandcamp (https://riobynightband.bandcamp.com/) They are currently booking western Canadian tour dates for early-2018.

Lyrics

Apollo's Ear

Written By: Britt MacLeod

I was just a child
running through the dust creek side
to see through trees about your secrets
I ran back late sun
and tears streaking my face
you burned that bridge with cigarettes

oh there's that feeling again yeah
it hadn't been like that not yet
oh there's that feeling again yeah
I guess you taught me that

I was just a child
you took me in your arms
gently said, "so am I"
and to love you was to know
what living was
and to love you was to die

oh there's that feeling again yeah
it hadn't been like that not yet
oh there's that feeling again yeah
I guess you taught me that

I was just a child when I found myself lost
daydreaming
thinking thoughts too deep
and now whispering into Apollo's ear
it takes up too much time
to sleep

oh there's that feeling again yeah
it hadn't been like that not yet
oh there's that feeling again yeah
i guess you taught me that

oh there's that feeling again yeah
it's never been like this, no
oh there's that feeling again yet
I never let it let me go
I never let it let me go
I never let it let me go.

A Line To Draw

Written By: Britt MacLeod

words
pull at words
make them a string
a line to draw
twine to tie
time with time
and wrap around you and hold you tight
since I can’t

words
do what words do
bait or calm you
make trust
make fool

with the moon at my back
and the wind in my eyes
I want to tell you while
I have the chance
I am…

breath
colder the farther from you I get
as I pass through teeth and lips
and dissipate
nowhere and everywhere
too open

yes
you feel the yes come through my skin
you are the no I revel in
we have come to pass

with the sun through the slats
and the light in my eyes
I want to tell you while
I have the chance
I am alive
I am alive
I am alive…
again

Unshaping You

Written By: Britt MacLeod

Love is a shadow
Ever ahead or behind you
And ever with you
Ever untouchable
It lasts as long as the day does
And then it is all around you
Or so you wish/will it to be
When your glass seems only have full

Must we hunger for ellipses
Must we linger for semi-colons
Must we attempt to hyphenate
What we know to be enough
Do you grab at what galls you?
That insolent independence
Run from the one who stalls you
Who always calls your bluff

Oh…

I was thinking about thumbprints
And then thinking about imprints
And then about nightfall
And the edge of mortality
Excuse my reaching for substance
And enamoured acquiescence
Curious awe of your essence
And my loss of gravity

Love is a shadow
Ever ahead or behind me
Love can still light me
And what I questioned would be
Love may be ever in us
Still ever elusive
Love is a dream and a vision
That unshapes me while I sleep

Oh…

Something under skin
Pushed out from within
You can’t go back

Something under skin
Pushed out from within
You can’t go back

Something under skin
Pushed out from within
You can’t go back
Come back

Yet The World

Written By: Britt MacLeod

I don’t have faith in you
I only know what you are to be
I won’t put trust in love
Just look what it’s done to you and me

Yet the world
Keeps on
Yet the world
Keeps on
And on and on

I don’t have faith in me
I only know what I have to do
I won’t make waste of we
We’ve already lost
All that we could lose

Yet the world
Keeps on
Yet the world
Keeps on
And on and on

Yet the world
Keeps on

Cry About It

Written By: Britt MacLeod

bookmark the pages
you’ll come back to
there’s so much in it for you
you still can’t digest

peel back the loose threads
‘til you’re all edges
the word wedges
deep and echoes in your chest

the moon is cresting
on a night cloud
it’s lit up like low tide
on your brow

the wolf is resting
curled up in the shroud
at the pit of your belly
you don’t even wonder how

this city gnashes its glass teeth
breaks its mouth in around
the pathway to your door I used to take
all the chances I was given
and smash like bottles of morning milk on the floor

and you can cry about it
cry about it
but you are not allowed to stop
go on and fly without it
fly without it
just so you can feel the drop

I lit a bonfire
it was an arson
it worsened the more I tried to put it out
they’re still sifting through the ashes
we may never know
what that shit’s about

looked like a smile, I gnashed my glass teeth
broke my mouth in around
the archway of your door I took
every opportunity all the mercy that you showed me
and smashed like bottles of morning milk on the floor

you can cry about it
cry about it
but you are not allowed to stop
go on and fly without it
fly without it
just so you can feel the drop

you can cry about it
cry about it
but you are not allowed to stop
go on and fly without it
fly without it
just so you can feel the drop
so you can feel the drop
so you can feel the drop
