Bio

Edie Herrold is a very lucky woman. Not only does she have incredibly talented friends who share her love for Brazilian music, but she has had the great fortune to study with Jovino Santos Neto. Jovino shared the magic, power, and intricacy of his native music, inspiring Herrold to assemble this group of kindred spirits, collectively known as "Rio." Featuring the fluid guitar of Robert Tye, the colorful percussion of Dennis Sheridan and Sean Dobbins, pianist Dale Grisa’s tasteful and driving style, and bassist Edie Herrold’s grooves and embellishments, the sounds of "Rio" will delight you.

Herrold moved to Ann Arbor from Milwaukee, WI, where she was a founding member of "Naima." She has performed widely in Southeast Michigan, while pursuing a career in composing and producing music for advertising and corporate communications. As co-leader of The Herrold/Gordon Small Band, she has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Detroit Festival of the Arts, Top of the Park (Ann Arbor), the Birmingham Jazz Festival, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the Firefly Club (Ann Arbor).

Robert Tye, principal guitarist with the Detroit Symphony, has shared the stage with many jazz greats, including Steps Ahead, Earl Klugh, Michael and Randy Brecker, and Sir Roland Hannah. He is the recipient of numerous Detroit Music Awards in jazz, classical, and rock.

Dennis Sheridan is a first-call percussionist with years of experience performing Brazilian music with acts such as Sheila Landis and Brazilian Love Affair, and Brazil and Beyond.

Sean Dobbins, a founding member of Urban Transport, and a member of Dobbins/Kranke/Weed and the Paul Keller Sextet, is one of the most in-demand drummers in Southeast Michigan.

Dale Grisa is an extremely versatile pianist who performs with a wide variety of jazz, rock, and country artists.
