Melodic grooves that can fire you up or simmer you down, and lyrics that cheer the heart, ease the mind, and energize the soul.

Biography

Rob DeFriese’s songs are intensely stirring and touch the soul, inviting listeners to travel within and find an unexpected epiphany.

The substance of his music spans the playful joys of everyday life and the fiery inclinations of love, to the deepest questions about man’s spiritual existence.  With an ear for melodies that stay, DeFriese layers rock beats and creative instrumentals to yield an energetic and lyrical product.

Born into a musical family from the desert southwest of Phoenix, Arizona, Rob DeFriese began performing before the age of four and songwriting at age fifteen.  Trained (formally) as a vocalist, Rob is also a bassist and guitarist, and has been performing on those instruments for over thirty years. He more recently re-introduced the piano and trumpet to his instrument portfolio.

In 1989, he joined the Phoenix-based, original Alternative Rock trio, Ant Farm, which produced four EPs and albums with many songs by DeFriese.  After moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 2003, Rob helped form the Atlanta Unity Musician’s Guild, which he eventually led until 2013.  The Guild performed numerous inspirational originals by DeFriese. He was also a vocalist (both lead and backup) and bassist with The Mixx, a variety rock, pop & alternative cover band, and with The Mystery Trip, a Beatles’ music tribute band, appearing at more than 100 venues.

He currently lives, writes, performs, and teaches private music lessons in Phoenix, AZ.  He's now reunited with Ant Farm, and is a bassist/vocalist for JC & The Rockers, a Phoenix-based Blues & Classic Rock band playing mostly cover songs.  He recently completed a solo album, "Altitude," and will soon release another album with Ant Farm.

His goals are to record and perform his original music, write for commercial purposes (movies, television, and advertising), and create songs for other artists to perform.

Take It Easy

1997 ANT FARM

I remember when I was a boy
I was easily upset
I remember crying
At times I thought it was the end of the world
One day my mother said to me,
"Raise your head,
dry your eyes,
it's okay, you're doing fine.
Don't get upset, now,
just take it easy."

At times I think that I am still the same
When I can't seem to 'let it go'
I wonder if I'll ever learn
Now and again I reach that certain point
A soothing breeze of inner peace
I breathe in deep
Close my eyes
"It's okay, you're doing fine.
Don't lose your head, now,
just take it easy.
Just take it easy..."

Many memories I may recollect
That one I never will forget
I feel that breeze rush in
Many things we get upset about
Many things we will survive
When it gets too much for you
I hope that you might feel it, too
"Don't get upset, now,
just take it easy.
Don't lose your head, now,
just take it easy."

VERSE 1
When you awake and you remember that I’m not there
And all that remains is my scent and my song
You gotta know I’m always with you wherever you may go
We’ll be together again and it won’t be long

REFRAIN 1
‘Cause why shouldn’t we let ourselves be happy
And don’t we all truly want to believe
That there’s someone else out there who feels the way you do
And isn’t it time we learn to receive

CHORUS 1
And I’ll be the music in your life
And you’ll be the song on my lips and my tongue
And I will be singing out louder and stronger
You’ll be my song when the day is done

VERSE 2
When I awake and I remember that you're not there
And even the birds are calling your name
I cheer myself by remembering the love you've spoken to me
And surely you know that I feel the same

REFRAIN 2
'Cause why shouldn't we let ourselves be happy
'Cause don't we all truly want to believe
That there's someone else out there who feels the way you do
And isn't it time we learn to receive

CHORUS 1
And I’ll be the music in your life
And you’ll be the song on my lips and my tongue
And I will be singing out louder and stronger
You’ll be my song when the day is done

Send the Ghosts Back to Heaven

Written By: Rob DeFriese

Lyrics by Rob DeFriese
Music by Rob DeFriese, Jeff McGahren, & Jonathan Albano

Some say a ghost is just a soul without a home
And when a life is incomplete, the earth it’s bound to roam
One has to wander
Until the given task is done
Then it rises to a Light
That’s brighter than the sun

Some say a feeling’s like a ray of energy from the soul
When they’re not released they say that some can eat a hole
…right through the heart of you
‘til you accept it and let go
But if you can’t do that
You’ll be a lost and restless soul

I wanna end the suffering and send the ghosts
Back to heaven

It’s said a new relationship’s like a just-remodeled home
We’ll even put down collateral and we’ll take out a risky loan
On the chance we’ll be happy
That it’ll make us wanna stay
Try to make it better
And hope we get back what we paid

It’s said our soul is like a house that’s filled with ghosts
Our joys, our pain, the mem’ries which our heart holds host
Some, like raging demons
Some, like angels of pure Light
Some, just wanderers waiting
For the daybreak from the night

I wanna end the suffering and send the ghosts . . .
And when you look at me
Do you see the face of some old ghost
Waiting for the Light

[guitar solo over ½ verse]

I wanna end the suffering and send the ghosts . . .
And when you look at me
Do you see the face of some old ghost
And sometimes I see the same thing too
But it’s no damn good for me or for you
Let go

Send the Ghosts back to Heaven
Send the Ghosts back to Heaven
Send the Ghosts back to Heaven

Arise

INTRO
Wake up my love, it’s time to
Shake yourself out of slumber
Come now, today’s a brand new day

CHORUS 1
Awaken, Awaken
You’ve got so much to do
Awaken, what is it stopping you?
Awaken, Awaken
Why do you hesitate?
Awaken, it’s past the time to wait

VERSE 1
Yes, I understand all the struggles you’ve been through
You needed time rest, to heal and renew
But now can you hear that voice that cannot be sudued

PRE-CHORUS
It’s a cry that’s growing louder
You have to light the keg of powder
Or nothingness is all that will ensue

CHORUS 2
Awaken, Awaken
You’ve got so much to do
Awaken, what is it stopping you?
Awaken, Awaken
Why do you hesitate?
Awaken, it’s past the time to wait

VERSE 2
What good is the bud of a flower that never blooms
When you can’t enjoy it’s beauty or perfume?
And what good is an instrument that’s never being played
And with lack of use, falls into decay?

PRE-CHORUS
So arise now, you must awaken
And no, you have not been forsaken
But you must do your best and don’t delay

BRIDGE
Arise now! Arise now!
You don’t have to be afraid
Arise now! Let your colors be displayed
Arise now! Arise now
You have a gift to give the world
Arise now! Let your banner be unfurled

CHORUS 3
Awaken, Awaken
You’ve got so much to do
Awaken, what is it stopping you?
Awaken, Awaken
Why do you hesitate?
Awaken, it’s past the time to wait
It's past the time to wait
It's past the time to wait
It's past the time . . .

VERSE 1
Have you ever dreamt that
You could spread your wings and fly
Not just above the rooftops, but even higher?
You start off by just running
Then take the biggest jump you can
Lifted by the wind and your desire

CHORUS 1
And I can’t help but think that it’s all possible
Not just the realm of Peter Pan
What do you think would happen if we take that running jump?
What height and distance we could span

VERSE 2
Did you ever wonder
If this is as good as it gets?
Or do you know in your heart there’s something better?
You start off by imagining
Put ideas into words
And words into the actions, you go get ‘er

CHORUS 2
And I can’t help but think that it’s all possible
Not just the realm of Peter Pan
What do you think would happen if we take that running jump?
What height and distance we could span . . . could span

BRIDGE
And there are always people who will say it can’t be done
Remember they may just be afraid of heights
Some will grab at your legs, crying “Gravity!”
Just keep that skyline in your sights

VERSE 3
Have you ever had moments
You felt your heart so full of love
You thought that it'd explode and set the world on fire?
You start off by seeing the other
Then wish for peace and joy and love for everyone
Think of all the changes love inspires

CHORUS 3
And I can’t help but think that it’s all possible
Not just the realm of Peter Pan
What do you think would happen if we take that running jump?
What height and distance we could span

OUTRO
Have you ever dreamt that
You could spread your wings and fly

Straight Answer

Written By: Rob DeFriese

Lyrics by Rob DeFriese
Music by John Chavez, Rob DeFriese, & Dan Feldman
1997 ANT FARM

Big words from a big mouth
He wants to do away with your doubt
Can't tell us the truth if we don't wanna hear
I gotta have the facts 'cause I can deal with the fear, and...

CHORUS
I just want a straight answer
It's all I ever need
I just want a straight answer
And just a little honesty

I make the calls but she doesn't make them back
I begin to wonder if there's something I lack
If she could only speak in plain
I cannot know what's going on in her brain, and...

(CHORUS)

BRIDGE
We're not so fragile
We're not so weak
We must have communication whenever we speak
Tell me your true thoughts
Tell me your feelings
It doesn't matter as long as it's the truth

CHORUS (2 x's to END)

The Scariest of Monsters

Written By: Rob DeFriese

Lyrics by Rob DeFriese
Music by John Chavez, Rob DeFriese, & Dan Feldman
1997 ANT FARM

VERSE
When all is well, and you’re feeling fine, don’t stop to look at what’s behind
It’s when you think you can’t be beat, it follows you on stealthy feet

CHORUS
You sense a disturbance – you don’t know where it comes from
Begins from deep within you – a monster has his kingdom
There’s a monster in the deep end – rising up and getting stronger
You have to face it – have to face it – don’t deny it any longer

VERSE
At first you feel a nagging doubt, then question what you’re all about
‘Cause that’s the way it plays it’s game - exaggerates your fear and shame

CHORUS
You sense a disturbance – you don’t know where it comes from
Begins from deep within you – a monster has his kingdom
There’s a monster in the deep end – rising up and getting stronger
You have to face it – have to face it – don’t deny it any longer

VERSE
And if you find it’s on your back, you’ve fallen to a sneak attack
You’re best defense is not to fight.
Just use your cool, not all your might … not all your might.

CHORUS
You sense a disturbance – you don’t know where it comes from
Begins from deep within you – a monster has his kingdom
There’s a monster in the deep end – rising up and getting stronger
You have to face it – have to face it – don’t deny it any longer

The scariest of monsters…
The scariest of monsters…

New Start

Written By: Rob DeFriese

Lyrics and Music by Rob DeFriese
©2014 R.B.DeFriese

I watch the sunrise
I wish that my eyes
Could help me with my trouble seeing the truth
But something warms me
Besides the sunbeams
Something's been calling since the days of my youth

'Cause it's about time
For changing my mind
And thoughts that keep knawing me, weighing me down
A voice from inside
A love without pride
Says fearlessly show it to everyone around

CHORUS
'Cause it's a new day, a new start, a new place in my heart
I'm making more room so I've got to let go
'Cause it's a new hope, a new dream, a new way to see things
You're there just as long as I allow

And it's a slow pace
Doing "about face"
I marvel at how much I have yet to do
But it's a new start
I'm doing my part
And if I fall short I'll keep trusting in You

(CHORUS)
'Cause it's a new day, a new start, a new place in my heart
I'm making more room so I've got to let go
'Cause it's a new hope, a new dream, a new way to see things
You're there just as long as I allow

BRIDGE (new)
Imagine we forgot the idea of things we cannot do
Imagine that we're meant to be somewhere better than we ever knew
Imagining together we're creating what our minds can conceive
Imagining together we're living the life in which we believe

(CHORUS - 2xs to end)
'Cause it's a new day, a new start, a new place in my heart
I'm making more room so I've got to let go
'Cause it's a new hope, a new dream, a new way to see things
You're there just as long as I allow

Used To Be

Written By: Rob DeFriese

Lyrics and Music by Rob DeFriese

VERSE 1
There used to be a girl in my life
She gave me love and comfort in strife
I always thought that she’d be my wife
That used to be you . . .

But here I am a country away
Reminded of you every single day
And all that I have left is to say,
“You used to be mine”

CHORUS 1
And I still don’t understand it
What made you change your mind
Did you forget all that you said, how
This love’s so hard to find
And I still have no earthly idea
How your heart operates
And I never truly knew, ‘til I met you
How love can turn to hate

VERSE 2
I used to have a temptress in bed
Who lit the passion fires in my head
And had me seein’ her in infrared
That used to be you

But now I sit alone and confused
Feeling cast aside and abused
I gave it all, but I got excused
Now I used to be yours

CHORUS 2
And I still don’t understand it
What made you change your mind
Did you forget all that you said, how
This love’s so hard to find
And I still have no earthly idea
How your heart And I never truly knew, ‘til I met you
How love can turn to hate

[INSTRUMENTAL SOLO]

VERSE 3
It used be that she understood
Saw my all, but loved all my good
Saw I always did what I could
That used to be you

But it’s like you became someone else
I went ahead and let you put me through hell
The devil seems to have you under his spell
And whose are you now?

CHORUS 3
And I still don’t understand it
What made you change your mind
Did you forget all that you said, how
This love’s so hard to find
And I still have no earthly idea
How your brain operates
And I never truly knew, ‘til I met you
How love can turn to hate

OUTRO
There used to be a girl in my life
I always thought that she’d be my wife
Thought she was the Light of my life
That used to be you . . .
