"Jenkins Presents Musical Entrepreneurship"

Jenkins Presents Musical Entrepreneurship
By: Stephen Ortiz
Posted: 1/26/07

"Tonight we're going to cover what it truly means to be independent," said Robbie Jenkins, musician, artist, producer and educator of the music industry, to a small group of UConn students and members of Husky Entertainment Thursday night.

Jenkins was at the University of Connecticut to deliver his lecture titled "Independence in Today's Music Industry." The purpose was to help Husky Entertainment, UConn's independent student-run record label, to develop, and Jenkins gave pointers on how to manage a label in today's world. No one could have been more fitting for the presentation than Jenkins.

Jenkins, of Stamford, has quite a history in the music industry. He has a degree in Music Composition from the Berklee College of Music and has been actively involved in music since 1989, when he started off on his first tour with Surface, a R&B trio from the late 80s and early 90s. Since then, he has had an extensive amount of experience including world tours with various artists (hip-hop group P.M. Dawn and country singer Jimmie Vaughn, to name a few), several records, music videos and 15 television appearances, including the "Arsenio Hall Show" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

In 1995, Jenkins launched Overture Entertainment, Inc., his own record label/entertainment company on which he himself is signed. He stressed the importance of creating one's own brand, and pushing that brand with everything you do.

"Everything I do is through my company," Jenkins said. "Getting me here today was dealt through my company and it's important to push your brand," he said as he pointed to the logo of Overture Entertainment on the Power Point slide.

Jenkins started off his presentation with a look back on the industry and what led to its current state. He asked the audience if there were any history majors in attendance. With only one hand raised, he followed up on his point.

"You shouldn't repeat the mistakes of history," Jenkins said. "I learned a lot through trial and error - a lot of error."

He then talked of how the past is irrelevant when it comes to priorities. "Focus on the future," Jenkins said.

Jenkins went on to explain the rise and fall of music in the early '80s, about how major labels were the only place an artist could find a deal, and how there really was no independence to it.

"Once they signed you, you had to make money," he said. Many of the managers of the day were "pen-shy," meaning that they had a hard time signing artists due to the fear of failure. "It's risky," Jenkins said.

In the bulk of his lecture, Jenkins described the key aspects and discussed helpful hints of marketing ("there's an audience for everything"), being your own owner, the strength of "word of mouth," challenges of the industry, analyzing the situation at hand, the importance of developing goals and the key to true success.

"If you are organized, you can accomplish a hundred things at one time, that's the key to success," he said, "And if you don't have a plan, you're spinning your wheels in the mud." Jenkins learned this lesson himself when he shut down his record label for a year to re-evaluate its status.

The lecture was followed with a brief open discussion between Jenkins and the audience, and one final tidbit to send them on their way.

"If you think of yourself as just a club, that's just what you're going to be. But if you think of yourself as a label, then you'll be a true record label."

Robbie has spent the several years working on this latest offering. “Here comes an artist with a full range of musical talent to share with listeners that are constantly craving refreshing, new and simply said “good music”. Robbie makes a huge impression on this project”. As a review writer for “Justsoul.net” and a host of an online radio show, most important a music lover the debut release of “Because It Feels Right” is another example of the wonderful talent of independent artists from around the world. There are so many highlights to this CD that spans from a Caribbean groove to a romantic ballad. The CD starts out with a musically brilliant orchestrated lead into the vocals on “Just In Time”, leaving you with anticipation throughout the track. Robbie gets real and deep on “I Wanna Be With You” with a nice groove and truthful vocals from the heart. A Latin flair on “Handle With Care”. Sexy “Fingerprints” with a nice dance groove with a Caribbean beat that will put you in the mood. “The Next Phrase” showcases Robbie’s smooth and sensual vocals that will take things to the next phrase and the remix puts some cool hip hop into it breaking it down. “Undivided Love” is a nice up tempo club jam with love and spirituality. Funky is “You Got Me”. As for the ballads “Because It Feels Right” speaks to the power of love and a testimony, “I’m The One” is confident, honest and, heart felt. Saving the best for last “Wherever You Go” is thee highlight of the CD musically inspired with the awesome vocals and beautiful lyrics. This is a must have for your collection. “In a nutshell Robbie Jenkins “Because It Feels Right” effort is one to be musically enjoyed, appreciated and heard” The CD is available on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and Amazon.com. "Robbie Jenkins: 4 out of 5 Disc"

Musical success can be measured a number of ways, depending on the angle in which you approach it. Most people look at the ends (sales and popularity) as the ultimate factor, while those who learn, create, and appreciate the craft look at the means (discipline, inspiration, and knowledge) for the true measure of success. Building on the foundation (means) brings about the fame and the rewards (ends). Robbie Jenkins knows this process very well. Having been to school for music and growing an appreciation for the craft, he already has a lot of the tools necessary to put it all together. And with his debut album Because It Feels Right, this singer/songwriter is poised to take on the industry from the ground up. The lead single, "Wherever You Go," possesses all the right elements for a great R&B song, making it as worthwhile as any mainstream record out there today. "I'm The One" is another great track, relying heavily on Robbie's convincing lyrics and solid production. Other notable tracks on the album include the heartfelt title track "Because It Feels Right," the throwback feel of "The Next Phase," the smooth groove of "Fingerprints" and the serenity of "Tell Me." Despite it being independently produced, Because It Feels Right is a great first album for the up-and comer. With a bit more fine tuning, Robbie Jenkins will have all the ingredients he needs to become a force to be reckoned with in the future.

"Because It Feels Right"

Artist: Robbie Jenkins
Album: Because It Feels Right
( Review )

Written, Arranged, Performed and Produced by Robbie Jenkins! Nun also „Because It Feels Right“ als Zusammenfassung seiner musikalischen Kenntnisse und Vorstellungen.
