Bio

Robbie Rhodes is a recording artist and producer in the San Francisco Bay area, who has been playing music since he was six years old. He credits Elvis Presley’s untimely passing that led him to perform, and shares, “It was Elvis who taught me how to sing.”

Like so many others, Robbie was deeply affected by The King’s tragic death, and remembers that he was only 14 when Elvis passed. He was living in southwest Oregon and playing guitar with a friend, who said that Rhodes sounded just like Presley. They decided to bring their guitars to school and play for a group of friends during lunch. It didn’t take long for the audience to grow into a huge crowd. Their school held a talent show as a fund raiser, and after Robbie’s performance, the local newspaper wrote a review of the show. When a concert promoter read about Rhodes’ talent, he recruited him to go out on a national tour.

At 14 years of age, Rhodes was the youngest Elvis tribute artist of the time and played on stage with several famous musicians. In the early 80’s, he released a single, “Nobody at All” which received significant airplay in the Pacific Northwest. Over the years, Robbie continued to perform – including a tour in Japan – and opened for artists like The Coasters, The Platters, Night Ranger, Quiet Riot, The Scorpions, The Georgia Satellites, The Edgar Winter Group, Tommy Allsup, and most recently, Neil Sedaka.

While growing up, Robbie remembers that his favorite thing was listening to Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock/Treat Me Nice on 78 RPM vinyl. He has cited many diverse musical influences along the way, including Marty Robbins, Porter Wagoner, Johnny Cash, Wayne Newton, Brad Paisley, James Brown, Pink, Lady Gaga, Daughtry, Jack White, and Michael Buble. However, Rhodes insists, “Elvis Presley was THE one who first influenced my interest in music.” Although Robbie has stepped away from Elvis impersonations, he continues to pay homage to The King through his live shows and music releases.

Rhodes recently released his "NEXT Train From Memphis" album with songs by Elvis’ legendary songwriters. These were the tracks slated for The King to record before his passing. Robbie wanted to pay respect to Presley by recording the songs from that unfinished album. Glen Spreen, one of the co-writers of “Loving You’s a Natural Thing,” shared, “As one of the people who participated in the ’68 comeback, I find Robbie is very creative and his music speaks volumes.” The CD also includes songs written by Dennis Linde, Bob Morrison, Johnny MacRae, Mac Davis, Jerry Scheff, Paul Evans, Paul Parnes, Dale Hawkins, George Klein, Mark James, Layng Martine, Jr., Dolly Parton, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

Robbie wanted to keep the album authentic to Elvis’ sound, and whenever possible, used equipment contemporaneous to that era. This was even applied to what microphones, amps or pedal guitar effects were used during that time. Jokingly, he said, “At times, it felt more like an old music gear scavenger hunt than a studio project.”

Rhodes has not only maintained authenticity to the sound of that time, but is donating all proceeds to charity. All of the CD purchases will benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the You Pave the Way/Edie Hand Foundation. Edie Hand wrote, “Robbie Rhodes is a special guy with a genuine heart to celebrate my cousin Elvis’ music. He has the looks, charm, songs and class to pull off this new album.” She goes on to state that Robbie’s generosity will help, “… to make children’s lives better through the donations from the sales of his album.”

Robbie continues to perform, write and record music as a self-described fan and artistic student of his musical “Old Master”, and is currently working on a Christmas album. He will be on tour this summer, including stops in Nevada and Tennessee.
