Feeling a bit camera shy

SOCAN award-winning songwriter Robert Priest is one of the few Canadians to have achieved bestseller status as both a songwriter and a poet. The fiery rock ballad, Song Instead Of A Kiss, which he co-authored with Alannah Myles and Nancy Simmonds spent two weeks at the top of the charts in Canada and still receives airplay all around the world. His 2008 book of poetry, Reading The Bible Backwards, rose to number two on the Globe and Mail’s poetry charts, its sales exceeded only by those of Leonard Cohen. Feeling the Pinch, his latest CD continues and extends this tradition with eleven passionate love songs, hilarious rants and incisive political 'protest songs' that have drawn strong notices from reviewers. Robert is a graduate of the Toronto live music scene.  His 1st ever recording, Long Way To My Knees, won the Q107 homegrown contest.  HIs spoken word video Congo Toronto (1986) was played on MuchMusic  for almost 6 months and established for him a unique place in the poetry/music canon. Feeling the pinch is Roberts 4th CD of songs.

A Youtube video of Robert’s live performance of his song, One Crumb, is currently close to 110,000 hits.

Free Ontario, Robert’s song against the Mike Harris regime was decried by conservatives in the Ontario legislature. The Hansard video of the filibuster-extending discussion and ruling is online here:

Robert has worked as a lyricist with many well-known artists including Julian Taylor, Alanis Morissette, Alannah Myles, The Jitters, Tom Cochran, Marc Jordan, Staggered Crossing, Melanie Doane, John Capek and composer Srul Irving Glick.

Robert’s spoken word video Congo Toronto (1986) was played on MuchMusic for almost 6 months and established for him a unique place in the poetry/music canon.

In the 90s Robert won a Chalmers award for his musical children's play: Minibugs and Microchips. He has also written and performed songs on Sesame Street.

Feeling the pinch is Roberts 4th CD. He has released four CDs and 14 books of poetry and prose for everybody.

Robert is currently performing his songs regularly in coffee houses, bars, festivals, libraries, house concerts, schools and stadiums all over the world. He lives in Toronto where he continues to write songs, poetry, children’s novels, plays and is a regular contributor to NOW magazine. Missing Piece, the third book of Robert's young adult fantasy series Spell Crossed, was released in October 2016 by Dundurn press. Spring 2016 will see the release of People like You and Me, the sequel to his award-winning and much praised volume of poems for children and young adults, Rosa Rose, (Wolsak and Wynn).  Currently Robert is at work with noted producer, Bob Wiseman, on a new collection of songs. Along with fellow poet/singer-songwriter Max Layton, Robert and his excellent band can be seen on the 2nd Sunday of every month between 5 and 7 PM at Toronto's Tr
