"MUSOSCRIBE: Bill Kopp’s music blog: features, reviews, interviews, essays and whatnot"

Robert Goodman Band – Everything is Beautiful
No relation (thankfully!) to the Ray Stevens pop hit, Everything is Beautiful nonetheless does project a sunny vibe. Shimmering, wide-screen, orchestrated pop with a bit of rock edge, this release builds its arrangements around keyboard; there’s lots of piano glissandi here. Vague hints of everything from Hootie & the Blowfish to Bruce Hornsby will remind listeners of a time when “pop” music meant stuff that had a broad appeal – none of this niche-market stuff. Everything is Beautiful will appeal to (among others) those who used to rock out and now prefer something a bit calmer and more carefully-thought

"NEW TIMES 2011"

Music vet and New Times scribe Lee Zimmerman offers his insights, opinions, and observations about the local scene. This week: Robert Goodman shares his personal top five.
A few weeks ago, I found myself writing about a new album from a band I had never heard of, Everything Is Beautiful by the Robert Goodman Band. It was one of those eureka moments in which I stumbled across a set of songs so bracing and so engaging that even on first hearing, it made further listens practically mandatory.
I'll give kudos to the man who produced, engineered, and mixed the album, Cliff Rawnsley Jr. But I also have to believe that Goodman, the man responsible for writing the songs, playing the keyboards, and singing lead vocals, showed some savvy. His colleagues -- guitarist Dave Rubinstein, bassist Rick Shepherd, and drummer Tim Moss -- are talented as well. Clearly, Goodman is a master of melody and a guy with an appreciation for genuine pop perfection. Consequently, I asked him to reflect on his influences via his picks for his top five favorite albums. Not surprisingly, he wasn't at all reticent to share them.
1. The Beatles -- Abbey Road
Goodman: "I was a preteen -- 8 or 9 years old -- when I heard my older brother playing this music. The sound drew me in and took me on a journey... Both my heart and soul were instantly connected to the vibe, the production, the arrangements, the melodies... It's like I automatically understood it, and I was hooked. Our stereo even way back then had a microphone you could plug in, so when I was left alone, I sang along and jammed with the Beatles."
2. The Beatles -- The White Album
"It was so trippy that even though I was a young boy, I felt a kinship to the Beatles. Every song was different, and I think that really influenced my ear as a singer and writer. I let the songs guide me when I write as I think the Beatles did. It's either natural or it's not real!"
3. Elton John -- Yellow Brick Road
"I was 10 or 11 years old, and I had just lost my older brother Carl to a hit-and-run driver in South Hampton, New York. I had an YBR eight-track and a pair of big padded headphones, so when "Funeral for a Friend" would come on, it was like I could commune with my brother. The music was lush and powerful, dark but uplifting. "Daniel" was also an important song -- Daniel my brother got on a plane to Spain, and I never saw him again. Elton John's music saved me and taught me a different dynamic and the importance of piano in pop music."
4. The Eagles - Hotel California
"In the '70s as a teenager, I was living That '70's Show in real life. This album brought home a sense of Americana rock for me. First of all, the Eagles had great songs, and they still do. The melodies and harmonies were so thick and rich; I would guess that they studied the Beach Boys and Beatles when they were young. I've always felt like I had a sense of the West Coast vibe. It's similar to the Southern vibe but a little more laid-back. But at the same time, it's got balls when it needs to."
5. Tears for Fears -- Sowing the Seeds of Love
"I was living in L.A. in the '80s when they came out with this awesome album. Though I love all of Tears for Fears' albums, including Roland [Orzabel]'s solo years in the '90s, Sowing the Seeds of Love brought a sense of the Beatles and love, peace, and deep thoughtful music back to the world music scene.
"This is one of those works of art that needs to be heard with a good set of headphones and time to ingest the textures. In fact, most LPs deserve to be heard from beginning to end. It's a shame that the music downloads have really set back the nature of an album being a complete work, something to be digested whole. It's hard for culture to progress when the artist is dissected from their work song by lonesome song!"
Goodman also adds, "I'd include among my runner-ups Elbow, U2, Seal, XTC, Jellyfish, among my faves!"
Good choices, all.

"Palm Beach Post Bill Meredith's: Top CD's 2011"

Honorable Mention- Robert Goodman Band-"Everything Is Beautiful" -Forward Motion Records. - Palm Beach Post Dec 6th 2011

"Palm Beach Post : Impressive new offerings from locals Goodman..."

West Palm Beach keyboardist/vocalist Robert Goodman (robert goodmanband.com) is best-known for his heady patriotic tunes, but he goes for the heart on his band’s new release, Everything Is Beautiful (Forward Motion). Utilizing longtime members Dave Rubinstein (guitar) and Rick Shepherd (bass), plus guests like original drummer Mark Nemcek (since replaced by Tim Moss), Goodman mixes classic American and British pop influences. You, with his orchestrated keyboards and Stephanie Shepherd’s flute and piccolo, hints at The Beatles. The Todd Rundgren-like Story features Goodman’s strong falsetto and Rubinstein’s best solo, and Make You Smile highlights a strong second half by recalling Tears for Fears through Goodman’s arrangements and vocal phrasing.

"New Times -Backstage in South Florida Dec. 1 2011"

Music vet and New Times scribe Lee Zimmerman shares stories of memorable rock 'n' roll encounters that took place in our local environs. This week: Three new releases from this remarkable record label continue the emphasis on excellence...
The Robert Goodman Band is a relative newcomer to the Forward Motion lineup, but his offering on the live set, "Tears on My Shoulder," is also a highlight on the group's aptly named album Everything Is Beautiful. A reliable rocker driven by an irresistible refrain, it finds Goodman's singing soaring to the upper reaches of his vocal register. Goodman and company are obviously adept at radio-ready piano pop, and indeed, even on first hearing, these songs sound like they've been circling in the cosmos for an eternity. The immediacy is apparent, as is the band's savvy when it comes to finding the perfect combination of melody, arrangements, and application. Hints of Ben Folds, Billy Joel, and Eric Carmen weave their way through these dozen offerings, clear indication that the group has nailed a reliable formula and turned it to its advantage. Here's one more reason why we in South Florida can look with optimism on the current crop on homegrown music makers. With its first entry, the Robert Goodman Band is already well situated at the forefront of the pack.

Good Vibrations
By Lewis Goldberg

Ever been in a situation you've been in countless times before, but for some reason this time it just feels different? Like the stars are aligned so that the same old scene seems better than it ever has? This, my friends, is what we call a vibe.

When the Robert Goodman Band takes its avant-jazz to the stage at a local hotspot, the vibe is right. Sure, you've seen a thousand different jazz groups at a thousand different bars, but this five-piece progressive combo, led by a local high school history teacher, controls the moment. They could teach us all a thing or two about improvisation and composition. History repeats itself each Wednesday evening from 8 to10 p.m. when the Robert Goodman Band provides the vibe at The Lounge (517 Clematis St., West Palm Beach). Admission is free. "Homegrown: South Florida bands"

Teaching history to high schoolers, Robert Goodman believes learning doesn't stop when the bell rings.

When his day job ends, Goodman continues to inspire minds by playing songs about saving the planet to audiences around South Florida. The West Palm Beach native entertains crowds with messages about love and peace set to a blend of jazz, progressive rock and soul. He's backed by his eponymously named group, the Robert Goodman Band.

Goodman's no newcomer to the global harmony groove. He began crafting tunes about caring, sharing and healing as a kid in the late 1960s.

"The Beatles changed me," Goodman said. "I could never write a song that doesn't mean something. What's the point of creating if you don't give back?"

His current band is the latest in a long musical resume that includes studio work and solo gigs. The group features Goodman on lead vocals and keyboards, with drummer Mark Nemcek, guitarist Dave Rubinstein and Rick Shepherd on fretless bass.

The band's already put out one CD, Back Home. They're working on a second disc, Everything Is Beautiful, due out this summer.

The group continues to spread what Goodman calls a "dismantle hate with love vibe" by lending their talents to a variety of causes, from pediatric AIDS to Doctors Without Borders. They're also donating a song, Story, to the documentary Death in Darfur — The Truth.

The band is helping raise funds for the film's production costs by collecting money from downloads of the tune on their Web site at robertgoodmanband.com.

The guys play regular gigs around town, too. Their next show will be helping ring in the third anniversary of the Rock, a weekly original music night held at Tobacco Road in Miami. The party happens 8 p.m.-4 a.m. April 18, with 30 bands on four stages at 626 S. Miami Ave.; 305-374-1198 or tobacco-road.com. (April 10, 2008) - Sun-Sentinel (Tribune) Miami Aprill 11

"School House Rock: by Audra Hodges"

I had some memorable teacher in high school, but I'm pretty sure they didn't spend their free time rockin' at local clubs. If they had I probabaly would have benn like Robert Goodman's students, who stand outside The Lounge in West Palm Beach hoping to catch a few notes as thier history teacher jams.
"My Students think it's cool that I have a band...some ask to buy CDs," the West Palm native said. "They think we rock. It also shows them that no matter what age, you can always do what makes you happy."
The Robert Goodman Trio, a progressive rock band, played for three years with a core of bass player Rick Shepherd and drummer Marck Nemcek. They had gigs in Delray at Dada and the monthly Jazz on the Avenue as well as Mizner Amphitheater in Boca Raton and the Blue Room in Orlando.
Last year *Nemcek left the band, "so we had to regroup,"Goodman said. "I ran into Drummer *Don Jacobson, at Dada. We had a gig coming up, and he said he could sit in. He sat, now he's been with us ever since."
Jacobson brought in guitartist Dave Rubinstein, and *Antonio Abada came in to play percussion and lend backup vocals. The now-five-piece band has been together since May and playing a regular show at The Lounge since June. They've been invited to play the West Plam Beach Summer Jazz Series and area venues like the Bamboo Room.
"We have a special sound together and we love to perform," Goodman said. "Also, our hearts and souls are in the right place."
The Robert Goodman Band has a new CD titled "Best of Live @ the Bamboo Room August 10, 2005." For more information, visit www.RobertGoodmanBand.com

* Mark Nemcek has rejoined the band since Spring 2006.
*DonJacobson and Antonio Abada no longer play as fulltime line-up.

Biography

The Robert Goodman Band has rekindled a spirit that made music timeless –building upon today’s current events and the history of our great nation for inspiration. In November of 2002, Robert Goodman, a noted songwriter, pianist and vocalist, joined with bassists Rick Shepherd, percussionist Mark Nemcek and guitarist Dave Rubinstein, to form this unique Band. Igniting a passionate flame of creativity in this new project the band has revived expressions of world peace, respecting the environment, ending poverty, and promoting freedom – this is the intention behind the themes found in this remarkable original sound. The incomparable group chemistry found within this brotherhood of musicians is notable in the rich musical style they produce.

Although he’s been writing and performing his original music for over 20 years, Goodman’s latest venture has brought together such diverse and creative influences that it has become a truly unique listening experience.
All at once, beautiful, articulate and edgy, the band energizes the lyrics of each song with a unique blend of music genres, resulting in a series of songs that have to be considered “current classics.” Their forthcoming CD “Everything Is Beautiful” captures the spirit of American music in all of its subtle forms, and the clear rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic tapestry it has created comes through sharply. The Band’s adventurous sound comes straight from their collective soul. It is the culmination of a lifetime of divergent musical journeys rolled into a vibrant and powerful search for beauty.
